I've been watching this storm progress through the charts since Friday night.
Below is what I've found the charts have been saying over the last few days.
Friday 18z output had 80-90mph wind gusts over 100mph for Friday at 6am.
Saturday afternoon on the 12z run said 50-60mph gusts 70-80mph. So a slight downgrade for Friday also a time change from 6am to 3pm.
During Saturday night the 18z said for Friday 60-70mph gusts 80-90mph. But moved the worst of the storm from 3pm to 9am.
Sunday morning showed a downgrade in winds again similar to what was being said on Saturday afternoon but moved the worst of the storm from 9am Friday to Wednesday 9pm.
Sunday afternoon on the 12z run showed a higher winds.
And on Sunday night on the 18z run similar to the 12z but just a slightly higher wind speed.
Monday the 00z run showed a big downgrade on the wind.
But on the 06z run this morning showed the biggest change yet.
Finally the latest 12z released this afternoon shows a downgrade from this morning.
Just thought I would give you all a little history on what's been happening. I will post up my forecast tonight after the 18z run.
Certainly big changes in it, during the last few days i hope it gets upgraded i might sound sad but im excited for a good storm havent had a really good one for a while lol
-
Its certainly looking interesting considering we havent had much in the way of wind this winter so far, late thursday early friday morning is looking like its worst here according to NW there says gusts of nearly 80mph for my location
-
Getting more reports of lightning across Lewis from people on my facebook.
hope I get some more over this way
nice i hope it moves this way as most of the north of caithness just had a thunderstorm and i heard that there was wild hail and rain with it but it missed us here in wick, we only got a flash of lightning and a few spots of rain
-
just had a massive downpour of rain, heaviest rain i have seen for ages but not sure if there was thunder in that shower but by the intensity of the rain thunder was quite likely
i really want a proper thunderstorm hardly ever see one

Sorry to hear that WB. Its the danger we all face down the east coast....theres as much pain as gain in this increasingly marginal situation for us coasties.
from other topic
yeah definately for us coasties, though im used to it as through the whole cold spell so far the snow has thawed and come back and the temps have risen and fallen too but this was the longest we have had snow laying so it was annoying to see it melt
-
I see the Metoffice detailed "5 day forecast" for individual east-coast towns and cities from Wick in the North ... down to Newcastle ... is indicating temps of 4,5,6 degrees from tomorrow onwards.
Which means either:
- snow melt will begin apace in these and neighbouring areas tomoroow with rapid slushing and the start of the loss of snow cover
or
- that temperature forecast is just another rank poor piece of computer generated forecasting
We'll know in 24-36 hours if the east coast giveth or taketh away
-
was looking through earlier posts i think its happened here already the temp is nearly 4C and its been raining overnight and we have very little snow
-
had the horrible coastal warming here woke up to heavy rain and there is hardly any snow left and the temp is sitting at 3.5C
what a dissapointing night for the temperatures for trying to bet the record low
-
im surprised but we still have a covering of snow here been here for a few days cold last night was down to below -5C has not warmed up yet much sitting at about -2C there are fields behind my house they don't have much snow laying but there is such a lovely frost on them
there is a shower trying to move in from the east just now it been trying for a while but wind is an westerly just now
-
it stopped snowing here for about 15 mins but thats it started again temp is about 1.5C here but dew point is 0.5
-
The metoffice should stick to generalities and to the possible risk of snow in broad geographical locations . Forecasting snow with intensity=X, at location=Y, at time=Z is a ludicrous proposition. These 5 days forecasts are a waste of their time and (lets face it..) our money. No-one should pay any attention to these as articles of fact. They're just not.
The solution if you want to formulate and pass on local advice over the comng days ?
1) Netweather/this thread for local knowledge
2) Radar/sky & cloud watching/nowcasting
Forecasting cold for the rest of the week is the easy part. But on the details ? Take it a day at a time, sometimes hours at a time. Anything else is a game of chance, supposition and hopecasting.
i could not agree more i annoyed at the met office as most of the time the forecast they gave for my area has been completely wrong or unaccurate
what also annoys me is the difference in the the bbcs forecast and the met offices last night the met office said for here heavy and possibliy prolonged showers but yet the bbc showed no showers and they were right there was no showers
i must say that this forum has helped me find out what the weather is going to be so i would like to thank everyone for it
-
still snowing its a bit lighter but everything is white must be the best snow covering of this cold spell so far
-
we had soft hail which covered the ground nicely after the sleet earlier still whiteout looking up north from here but its snowing now and starting to turn heavy
edit: now heavy snow
-
sky brightened up slighty and the snow stopped here but its getting duller again and the snow has started so i think this is the main band now
edit: its only light snow here but its getting darker but looking north of here and its whiteout so i hope its moving
-
Thius is good news, keep us up to date with how it turns out. Thanks.
Are you at sea level.ish??
i will do
yeah were pretty much sea level here im surprised its even snowly as so far when it snows here most of it has thawed by the next day so hopefully this will stay
-
we had a snow shower earlier but then we had a light sleet shower and has now turned to snow and and pretty heavy here just now
-
had a few snow/ soft hail showers yesterday evening which gave a covering and its still on the ground this morning im pleased as usually its thawed cold night last night down to -4C
-
I am in Caithness. Very wet and way too warm. +2.5 just now with a DP of +0.6. Heavy showers passing over which are mainly rain with a touch of hail. However I live 50 meters from the sea at sea level and I have only had two days of snow so far. It has been a different story just a mile or so inland, they have had snow since around the 23rd.
Tugmistress has 3 weather stations operating in the county but they are all on the coast. Scrabster, Dunbeath and Keiss.
I hope you guys get better luck than us.
yeah excatly the same over on this side of the county everytime it snows and lays its thawed by the next day and thetemperatures change so quickly here as well i just wish we could get some decent snow!
-
That was her. I'm on here so intermittently I can't keep up with who's in and who's out.
Really not sure about that PL... Lerwick isn't reporting much excitement...
Nor Kirkwall.
Gusty and wet at Wick now...
yeah it certainly did get gusty and wet there was a bit of hail in the rain too but hardly any snow here
-
had some strange weather earlier at about 6 this morning we had a very heavy hail shower which only lasted seconds then there was a rumble of thunder after and then about 10 mins later had another shower of hail which lasted slighty longer and there was lighting and then thunder afterwards and also the wind was odd it seemed to go from hardly any to pretty gusty temp rose a few degrees aftterwards and now the sun is out and no snow left
-
Happy new year everyone
-
just had a heavy hail shlower which is now laying finally the ground is white temp is falling now so hopefully all showers now will be white rather than sleet
-
heavy snow here now and its laying a little despite the wet ground
-
heavy snow shower here just now but not laying as the groung is wet
-
Right that's it! Driving up to INV right NOW!!!
i think i should come down to inverness as well as there is no snow here just wet ground
