  1. I was predicting South yorks to do well and the eastern part to miss out...how wrong was I! You have snow in Dony and not in Sheffield!

your right cheesecake, it's just not been Sheffield's year. It's always been a bit North. Leeds / Bradford gets the crown this year.

Maybe it will pivot back.....but will it stay as snow?

  2. 13 minutes ago, The PIT said:

Maybe 5mm here now trying to cover the road again.

I live at a similar elavtion as you but the north of the city.  There is about 3cms here which = 30mm!  Are you sure you not getting mm's mixed up with cm's.  Sorry but i had to say as im getting confused. 2mm = thickness of a pencil nib?

Anyhow thick and fluffy flakes for the last 30-40 mins with renewed intensity.  Beginning to get some good depth now rather like the Leeds pics.

  3. This talk of a Sheffield snow shield....Where did that come from?  Over the last few years we have done super well for  snow and I think many would call us a snow magnet.

I work across Yorkshire and many a times last year I would leave and return to a snowy Sheffield whilst many places just outside Sheffield would have little if any snow.

Even today, it was doubtful that we would get snow but looking out of the window in the lower eastern part of the city (where Im now visiting friends) the snow is coming down relatively heavy.  I live in the north of the city and expect more snow to be building on the ground there.

Sheffield is very lucky for all the snow it has had over the last few years, no shield here - you only have to ask those further east and west to know that.:)

  4. Been a good winter in Sheffield for snow. Living in the city at 150m weve had our fair share. Here we have had 17 snow lying days and the snow still covers half my neighbours back garden (not counting as snow days now as generally clear now). I would say we have had a total aggregate depth here of 18inches.

Others that are higher in the city will still be recording snow lying days even now i.e. up towards Lodge Moor and Fullwood. I did take a drive up there a few days ago and was surprised to the amount of snow. I think they will have have had an aggregate of 30 inches up there so far this season.

Conversley, my dad lives lower down in the city at 180 feet and there aggregate has been 10inches so it really has been height dependant and marginal.

In conversation many talk about this being a snowy winter in Sheffield. Ive enjoyed it and i shoudn't be talking like its the end given that its only the 1st week of Feb. Hoping for more for all.

  5. Intresting discussion and pics!

Which city in Yorkshire has the perception of being the snowiest?

Ps- looked out at 6.40ish and it was sleeting. No fresh snow evidence. Cant look out again (lie in morning is Satarday) as the Mrs will think ive gone bonkers......fact is i am bonkers about snow! Lol

  6. Heavy heavy snow in Sheffield. Love the pics from Dronfield and i guess that representative of North Sheffield as well.

    Looks like a streamer.

Sheffield is having a good winter. You know that when people chatter and say they have had enough now....i aint!

Is Sheffield the sweet swot again. We are refrerenced on the tele and radio and other regional threads....great!

I think we have about 7cms and building.

  7. The met office reporting weather site at Western Park Sheffield has just tweeted am 'official' 15cm depth of snow in the city and said that it is the first decent fall since March 2013.

Did the city have the biggest official fall out of this event?

  8. Blimey! Got stuck in the snow and had to abandon the car with many others at the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield. Had to walk 2 miles uphill to shirecliffe with crazy scences on view all over the place. Back at home I've measured 13cm on the bin and a general cover of 12cm to 13cm. Much above expectations in Sheffield. Surprised no amber warning was issued earlier. I'm cold and need a cuppa! But kind of enjoyed it...lol. Now I'm gonna catch up on who got it and who missed out. Sheffield definetly got it!

  9. Huge flakes in Sheffield. Huge big white out flakes. Quite scary to drive in as i had to pick up my daughter. Turned to snow about half 6. Drovr from my elevation at 150ish ft to 70ft and it was all thick snow. All roads are covered and its trechreous. Just what we called for! Maybe we are in the sweet spot!

  10. Hi All,

A really difficult one to call this one.

Normally from my limited experience the eastern side of the Pennines does well when precipitation is coming in from an associated system from the SW. The Pennines have an uplifting effect that enhances the precipitation. So Chesterfield / Sheffield do well as well as into W.Yorks but the big question is will the heavy stuff reach here? The NMM says yes and the EURO 4 says not the heavy stuff .......now which one do we trust most. I know which one I would choose!

According to the NMM Sheffield would be the sweet spot.....but we all know this is nowcasting.

Whichever....gripping stuff for us weather fanatics!

  11. Still nice to see some snow in very shaded parts - obviously where there had been drifts or snow cleared into piles. We live right on top of a modest hill and I haven't seen any more of these patches as soon as you leave the estate.

I did go across the Woodhead yesterday and there is still plenty of snow up there - not general cover but rather drifts against 'things'.

So glad to be on this side of the Pennines though as friends in Manchester have said that they have had very little snow this winter!

Today is a 2nd pleasant sunny afternoon...the type that makes you look out at the garden and think I better begin tidying it up after winters fury.

  12. Just have a peep outside....gosh.....at a guess we must have 10 inches at least on the grass. lots of blowing and some blasting across the walls of neighbouring houses. It does remind of 2010 but probably not that epic in snow amount but yes that epic given that's it's nearing the end of March.

Main road covered and people are walking on the tracks that the cars have eated rather than the pavement as its so deep.

NAE says it will last till 6pm.....probably not add much as its forecast to lighten - even though it's light to start with.

    Wow.

I think i can definitely say this is the most snow i have seen in quite some time. I think the epic drifts make it so much more enjoyable! I will get some pictures today. Redmires looks just like narnia.

    Hi Honeyplanet

How much do you have up there?

  13. theres 14cms on the grass outside. im sure theres been some drifting on that but big drifts against the fence. Radar looks great. Sheff's location against the upslopes must be helping.

However big contrast in the east of the city where on lower ground there was a wet dusting at 5pm whilst at home their was a good 7-8 cms. Much more now. What a great winter, my mum says its like it used to be in the 70s when i was born!
