Storms and Convective discussion - May 2024
Reefseeker replied to Eagle Eye's topic in Storms & Severe Weather
LetItSnow! Same here in Surbiton, where it's very hot when the sun is out - quite frequently - and the skies have had that stormy look to them since this morning. I mentioned to Eagle Eye, if we're too far east for the main storms, maybe the French ones can pick up some energy in our area.... if they make it this far west... -

Eagle Eye Yes, we're too far east here in Surbiton, yet the air is hot and humid with popcorn skies and large cauliflower clouds forming since 11am. Hopefully we're not then too west for the French storms to find some energy in our area. But yes, highly likely to end up with nothing right in the middle! -
weatherobsuk Fantastic, that's really helpful, thank you

weatherobsuk Sorry to ask a silly question. I took my pic last night on a Google Pixel 6 pro, using Night mode. I'm not sure what Astrophotography mode is, or if is on the 6 if I get another chance tonight? Beautiful phoenix

*Stormforce~beka* You probably saw it. In Surbiton it was greyish streaks that looked like contrails, so I assumed it was just the usual Heathrow flight path at first. But the lines in the sky were lit up so I checked on my phone and it took this picture

At 8.30 this morning, the long trail of rain set up shop over us and made sure to stay right on course to keep stuff falling from the sky for as long as possible. Winter coat back on, hood up and shoes wet; pinning my hopes on a few nice days next week with high pressure preferably positioned to deliver some pleasant warm, clear weather.

I woke up at 3am to quite distant thunder to the south/south east and south west of here, which was nice as the rumbles and flashes of lightning were quite gentle but I still got to enjoy it all. It sounds like this was quite a storm covering multiple locations, although that early direction of travel almost direct west from around Ostend last night was so strange to watch on the radar. Grey skies this morning and still humid.

So humid out there for our lunchtime walk. Uniform grey and white clouds above, very still and the radar showing rain but nothing falling. We are just outside the main warning zones for more severe weather overnight; hopefully we can get a bit of a lightshow and some rumbles nearby. Good luck to those who love a storm:)

Mark wheeler Wow, it's no surprise your ears were ringing being so close! At least no one was hurt I suppose. My husband (who is brontophobic) got really stressed because he is sure he saw sparks outside our back door as the thunder struck. It's definitely the first time thunder has shaken the entire house!

Thanks, and yes, I had a bit of hope for snow in Prague, but am happy with cold and seasonal. Agree with what you say, 'cold' varies so much, especially with a stiff wind against you. I'll put Riga on the list; I was there as a student, so it would have changed rather a lot by now. My coldest ever was -25 in Moscow, and my face went so numb I couldn't speak! Sounds like you have done well on the snow front - send your luck around the south east on Wednesday... please!

A beautiful winter's morning here in Surbiton, after a hard overnight frost (the closest to anything looking like snow we're likely to get!), the air is crisp and sunny under blue skies, although rather raw walking into that wind. I'm loving the seasonal weather personally, but am disappointed at the lack of the white stuff later in the week. We're off to Prague for a few days on Saturday, so the cold weather will be good practice for correct clothing choices; hoping that storm doesn't come in too early and disrupt the flights.

Can I very much agree with @Paul; it's the first place I go, along with my regional thread, to get a feel for what's going on. Then, if I have time, I brave the MAD thread!
