  1. The showers of the Suffolk/N Essex coast have just arrived I just got back in from visiting the sports centre about a mile away in town. The town roads round here are treacherous, not ramping when I say driving is like ice skating without the control. Since the last fall about 90 mins ago it has all been compacted by traffic and frozen to an ice sheet. Unless something changes like serious gritting there will be many accidents in the morning unfortunately so take it easy out there! Air temp 0°c Dew Point -0.7°c Wind NNE 12 MPH

  2. Been snowing here for about an hour. Some of the flakes have been the biggest I have seen (which includes the time I worked in Newfoundland during the winter!) It all appears to be moving through Essex towards London, so hopefully some of you guys who have missed out on decent amounts can be rewarded for your patience. Depth is about 9 cm now. A friend who has just got back from Romford says the roads round here are by far the worst on his route (A12/A120). I have told my wife that I wont burn the sleigh she bought last year as I previously blamed it for the lack of snow in this area lol

  3. Light snow recently started. The good old North Sea is doing it's stuff, lots seem to be bubbling up out there, coming this way and thankfully air temp and dew point now going in the right direction again...... bring it on :p Should see a topping to the 7 cm we had here earlier this morning :D Air temp +0.3 DP -0.7

  4. A question for the many knowledgeable technical people here. I hope it isn't in the wrong forum, pls delete if it is

I have observed the temperature increase by about a degree over the last hour and the dew point is down by about 1 and a half degrees. The wind has increased by about 10 mph. I am surprised by the increase in air temp but the decrease in dew point. Could this be due to the upper air temps coming down considerably and the wind effect on the surface temps or am I wrong? Current temp 1.9c, dp -1.3c wind 14 mph approx

  5. Bit harsh, if you hate the Uk so much why don't you a Norway weather forum.

The truth is we don't need to invest a lot of money into something which rarely happens. We have many people over here who can't drive properly in the snow but how much practice do we get? It's nice to see someone from abroad who is so understanding and knowledgeable about the British way of life. Did I detect a touch of arrogance in your message Publis? No surely not, you aren't from Britain but from a place where everything seems to be black or white

been looking on the dutch radar seems spme tasty showers coming off the north sea

That is what I was looking at earlier but even now here it is snowing - short lived affair according to what is show on closer range radar but at least the car has a covering. Hopefully it will move far enough inland so you see it over there. Must only be 4 miles as the crow flies (albeit a slightly drunken one at this time of year). Current temp 1.2c dp = -0.6c

  7. A friend of mine has gone to Bilbao on a ferry from Portsmouth which left some 8 hours late on saturday and he called me up early and said it was a bit lumpy so im glad on not on that ship and its due to come back to portsmouth on Monday afternoon!!!!!!!

    Good old Biscay!!!

When working as a navigation officer on a ship many times bigger than the P+O Bilboa ferry, crossing Biscay when going off watch in a gale, my wife lost her balance in the alleyway outside our cabin and slid across the width of the ship and back again and somehow I managed to grab her hand with my other holding the cabin door handle for my own balance. On the same crossing the table tennis tables in the gym turned to matchwood. Biscay can be very violent even for the large ships, your friend will be safe but may have a very bumpy ride.

  8. knightstorm, the snow thats now in Kent and about to spread into Essex is the frontal system spreading the very first of its fingers so to speak, looks like a pretty large region of snow coming up, will have no trouble getting another 3-6 inches out of it I'd imagine.

Looks like that finger has hit here light to moderate snow started about 10 mins ago. Still snow, not sleet, on the coast so a bonus for as long as it lasts
