  1. Did you know that a 150m drag lift costs £250,000!! At least that's what the bloke on the dry ski slopes told me. No wonder the ski passes cost so much. Probably not so much money to be made really!!crazy.gif

    Extortion!

Im sure i could knock something up with a few motor gearboxes, inverter speed control, and a bit of wire for less than 10k, however it may not be very safe, and there would be a high potential for some serious horrific accidents.

Heard something on the radio about a farmer who knocked something up , anyone else catch that?

  2. Been grabbing sleep as and when I can in between watching stupid motorists try their luck with the Graigerhorn today - some went over and slipped there way down while others took a look and thought better of it - a wise move I think - me even though I'd like to get my car out I'm glad I'm not trying my luck down that hill - when you drive up it you'd swear you'd been shot up into the air by Nasa in the shuttle being so steep - so they are either very brave or very stupid trying their luck

Cold will not be far away and this thread will be back shortly I'm sure - "Normal service will resume shortly" EH!

Not as cold as the GFS suggested it would be - you win your wager mate!wallbash.gif

I know it's not funny but may be you could open a ski shop or get a ski tow working - those lift passes in the alps cost a fortune - must be money in that

It wasnt me who had a wager with you , infact i dont think anything was waged, i just pretended it was i think, it was your -12 versus that other members -2 (apologies for forgetting your name, think you were in glanamman or something).

Keith gets to keep his £100 also.

Cant wait for the next session of "my snow is deeper than your snow" , and harsh words exchanged between members about the calibration of their measuring device etc , as they bicker over 6.5 inches and 6.75 inches.

Come to think of it, and it may sound stupid but how do you measure the depth of snow?

I mean officially? , does it have to be a certain type of surface?, does the surface have to be a minimum of 10metres sqaured ? how many measurement must you take?? eg 1 per metre then average it all up?

Does the surface have to be in an open area??

Can we clarify the rules , so before the next debate about the deepest snow , we will all know where we stand?

If the snow is yellow does it still count?

  3. i really hope that is not true. that will come close to bankrupting me.

2 months without work, or greatly reduced income anyway, is NOT funny.

i don't mind the odd snow, as long as it thaws away, and another event happens a couple of weeks later or something, but CONSTANTLY? no thanks!

Diversify into burger wagons near the new sledging resorts.

"This is by no means the end of this winter. It will come back again and stubbornly last into March "

Lol i see your still going strong Andy !! have you slept yet since that other evening??

That was some evening, i have seen some wild weather up around Aviemore a few times but to see it in Swansea was something else.

I read something earlier about this thread closing at midnight tonight.

The death knell has been sounded !!!

The grim reaper is just finishing his tea and hob nobs and will soon put this thread to death.

Been great, i hope its not too long before the next event.

However , this has all really re ignited my old passion for watching and witnessing the weather, so i shall be around to annoy you all for some time to come, that is unless i get banned again!!!!! for talking about a snow shield in Swansea !! Some people must have been seriously frustrated , and my snow shield posts must have sent them hurtling toward the report button!.

Once again the atlantic wins, but its not all bad as Sunday looks like a nice mild sunny day.

Lets have some serious cold soon, non stop ice days for at least two weeks for Swansea , with persistant heavy snowfall all over the country.

Ahaaaaa , whilst i remember Andy , talking of cold .... lol , what was the temperature last night??

  5. Ah well, this could be it for a while now, may even be the last cold spell.

Maybe this winter was a freak and ,it could be back to mild shmild for the next ten years.

Much longer gaps appearing between each post now, since the final whistle was blown earlier on.

This could be it folks, and i shall miss every single bit of the debate, right through from lamp posts to Andy musics -12 , the frustration as the snow just misses or peters out , the elation like last night as it just kept on and on and on.

Earlier this winter all i wanted was for the lampost to deliver for at least 20minutes non stop, last night it delivered for so long that i was up till 4am watching it , before it tired me out and i gave in.

The show is over now, the stadium is emptying, the security guard will be locking up shortly, soon the only sound will be the whisting of the wnd and the russling of empty crisp packets flying around the stands, a few seagulls on the pitch and maybe a stray cat or two.

Snow is decomposing and discolouring, id rather it all went overnight than a dragged out ghastly ghoulish affair.

Will pop in from time to time to see when the next show is on.

    Take care folks.

  6. The rain band is ever so close here now,GO AWAY !!! , i know its going to disappear but please Mr Atlantic do it in the evening in the dark.

I would say 5% chance it will be snow up here.

The real end is coming now ,it really is.

What a last hurrah last night and yesterday were though.

I just had to try and walk through those drifts in the blizzard conditions last night, i had images of the retreating German soldiers , frozen out in the battle for Stalingrad ,and struggling to hang on to life as they battled the elements , as i trudged wearily through the drifts, and back down to my humble abode.

  7. mild is being pushed out slowly - keep a close eye on the gfs models - then monday/tuesday next week back into the freezer with a mega easterly - hope we get a little bit of mild so as to be able to get some supplies in if nothing else!

you don't need to ramp the cold - it's RAMPING ITSELF!!!!!!!!!!

Radar showing a few rain showers here and there progressing quite far inland into south and west wales now.

Will be interesting to see if it is rain on mount Tycoch , surely it cannot snow again lol???

  8. The pictures i have attatched, are of me standing in the snow drift, at the top of Tycoch hill, on the drift side of the field.

Deepest part i found was nearly 3 foot.

    Crazy.

This is not up in the valleys, this is not Aviemore, this is Swansea !

Andy , the mild temperatures do keep getting pushed back , a few days ago im sure it had 6-7 degrees here for today, now this seems more likely to be Friday.

Cant beleive its taken so long for the atlantic to win, and it hasnt really won yet ......surely it will by Friday or Saturday??

I have not looked at any future forecasts , so will ask , and try not to ramp the cold , but what is the outlook??

    post-9521-12633849110328_thumb.jpg

  9. You got a deal babe - You can have my last bit of bacon, no probs - it'll probably be the last little bit of supplies we've got in the house by then

temps look like they are still gonna be freezin or below for today so no thaw today then! mmmmmmmm!

Morning Andy, did you go to bed at all last night?? only managed a few hours myself , i knew i was mad but i must also be crazy staying up till past 4am watching lamposts and radars on the internet.

    Right, back to business........

At what time (roughly)is this temperature reading taking place?

If you fall asleep and fail to take a reading then you lose.

If its below -7 then you win.

If its above -7 then you lose.

If it bang on -7 then you and (i cant remember who it was now) must make two more predictions, for the following evening or day or whatever.

    Regarding minus temeperatures:-

7.49 and below rounds down to 7

7.5 and above rounds up to 8

6.5 and above rounds up to 7

6.49 and below rounds down to 6

Am off out to measure the drifts shortly, and then try to clear my road.

  10. swansea's about to get another good dumping!

check sat24 - there seems to be some potent showers behind the front that might come our way - but that's all i can offer

i don't think we can moan though about the amounts we have - it's defo a snow day up here anyway - and i'll be digging my car out tomorrow at the earliest

GFS still has heavyish precip over us at least up till midday today mind!

even up till 6pm but slightly less heavy - so don't ask me what that is?????????

Looking at the images , the main band is being stretched apart ,hence why its kind of staying here for so long, its possible if it gets sucked further north that the main band could cling on a while longer , after that its the infrequent occasional shower maybe.

And yes its definatly provided this evening!!!

Here in Swansea up our highest hills we even have drifts that nearly match those on higher ground!!!

    Very heavy here now.

The net weather radar for me is stuck on 2.35 am lol, im nearly done in , the lamp post has beaten me, another 5 mins and im off lol

  11. Tracking the various radars over the last few hours and it looks likely to end in 3hours i think now.

Maybe a few more further east.

I cant see where anything else is going to come from ? can the back edge extend further back ,and generate more from out at sea??

Its not showing signs that it will do that.

Earlier forecasts would prove to be right , with the main spelll ending at about 6am.

  12. as Andy says easterly winds are the equivelent of this set up for eastern england and the london area and home counties. They pick up so much moisture from the north sea then dump it overland. These fonts usually fizzle out way before south wales, typically in berkshire or the swindon area. This today is a battlefront scenario that london can only dream of, I used to live in essex, althoughnot strictly english!!, and very occasionally we would do well out of such a battlefront, if it progressed a little further east. Lovin tonight, South wales really needed this!! drinks.gif

What im really saying is, surely the atlantic is much more of a generating force than that of the north sea?

Meaning were it to meet with cold air further south than usual (in cooler winters) then would that provide this area with heavier snow falls than that of the east coast?.

However, in history (last few hundred years),when this is the case , the atlantic is most likely less likely to attack us, going on historical records of the times?

As if that were to be the case, then western and Southern Ireland, and also this region would have a history of severe snowfall in winters long gone.

    Catch my drift lol??

By the way the lamp post will just not quit, heavy now.

  13. Updated radar showing another heavy wadge of snow about to hit us!

I've known easterlies produce very heavy precip but not really over wales - the eastern counties of england take it all or most of it before we get it - seems the thing with snow - it struggles to keep it together over long land masses

Next set of GFS models will start coming out at 3.30am - the 00z so we'll see if it upgrades the ppn anymore!!!!!

once this front clears through looks like there might be some hefty showers to follow it

Looking at the radar for existing precip and tracking it in general, it looks like another maybe 4 hours for here, possibly 6 further east before it ends.

Unless the precipitation starts to pivot shortly and head south to north that is.

However should it do so then surely that would more likely introduce the sleet that has been forecast?

  14. The radar on postcode zoom in is magnificent!

It has been nearly all pink/ dark pink / red for the last god knows how many hours covering a vast region without exception.

If this really is a sign of things to come, then in future our miserable predictable atlantic systems will be most fruitful, and possibly the most venomous set ups for snow fall in Britain.

Does an eastern system ever produce so much precipitation??

That is if the earth does infact cool , and that the atlantic systems would still keep coming.

  15. Was starting to tire, but am addicted to the radar and the lamposts, am not in work tomorrow, so enjoying this event to the max, going to get the tea and toast on now.

Am in my mid thirties ,and coming from up north i remember the cold winters up until the late 80s ,then not really much after that, and after last years event, this year is that doubled, am hoping this really is the start of a cold era.

Not so much for the gas bill !!! but just for the winter sports,as its easier to go out on crisp snowy days than miserable grey dull ones.

Lampost is STILL going, all be it lighter now.

It knows i cant leave it alone so its trying to tire me out, however this time i think it will beat me.

Tea and toast on the go..

  16. Only worry is that as sun rises temps will tip it into rain and we will lose our cover

Agreed, we can only sneak the snow in under cover on the coast, once exposed i fear were like the lost boys in the sun.

But there will be no sun, certainly no clear skies anyway??

How long can we fight the atlantic??

This is an amazing battle so far, however the atlantic will slowly pick us off with a few jabs here and there , weaken us, before steam rollering us into submission and slavery once more.

  17. Just behind it actually in black rd - a very remote country lane - we've got sheep and cows for neighbours except for the neighbour on one side of us

looking at the back edge of the precip ,and following that on a basic whats gone before level, there could well be another 4-8 hours left yet,for Swansea anyway.

Wonder how long it will be before it breaks up?? or is it possible it will slow and intensyfy further?

  18. sounds fair - You defo got a thing for hob nobs haven't you and that lampost - you wanna watch that - oh yeah you are - lamposts are for dogs - I think

Yep - the one above the train station - right at the top - the mountain road that leads to beddau - Tom would rather enjoy himself in Las vegas + the thing that annoyed me with that concert was - he was cele brating his 65th birthday and I would have thought to give something back to his home crowd - he'd perform without charging them a ticket price to get in - but there ya go - he didn't

My other half's a singer too - does shirley bassey/celine dion/ and whitney houston tribute shows all over the uk

Are you far from the main road (if you can call it that) ? done a few jobs in the secure care centre near Pen Y Coed Cae.

    High Cross area??

Your not resident in that care home by any chance??

lol Sorry, its a nice area up there,i did once nearly look at a property around there.

  19. OMG!!!! My lampost has just started whispering to me !!!!!! Hope it starts shouting

You have to feed your lampost, give it some tea , maybe some hob nobs, find out what it likes, all lamposts are different, try giving it some pickled onion monster much maybe.

The worst thing you can do is just stare at it and demand it produces, they are shy creatures, give them some confidence , show them you care.

I learned the hard way after being rejected earlier this winter by my lamposts.

Since i apologised and gave them hob nobs and tea they have been fine.

Just checked, and that road is getting whiter by the minute.

Those drifts up the top of the hill must be near 3ft by now, could well be -13 once the sky clears!!

  20. Bit like the "Perfect storm" famous line -

IT'S NOT GONNA LET US OUT

Having looked at a few forecasts Andy it would seem, may not be too far off the mark, however i cant see it either, but im having a few doubts and he may win this wager yet.

    -12 versus -2

At minus 7 it is a draw?? fair comment??

Either side of that will determine the winner.

Lampost is still playing a blinder, i think i may go take it a cup of tea and hob nobs in a minute.

Rather like a young child has that belief in Santa Claus, im beginning to believe that my lampost is producing all this snow, but how?? How can it do so?? how can so much snow emminate from an intrinsically protected unit?

  21. Icequeen-- the road going up the hill around the back of sketty primary school is now starting to white over.

Anymore significant snow showers from now will make that road impassable in your average vehicle.

It was touch and go earlier, but with a few vehicles , it managed to slush up and clear a bit, however now its really quiet so by the time the mornig traffic gets going it will be a slide all the way down but you wont get back up.

  22. Looks like more rain here in Morriston, doesnt suprise me with the temp still at 1.5C, Looking at the observations on the metoffice website even Mumbles Head is slightly colder than it is here at 1.3C bit of bad luck right there to say the least rolleyes.gif.

    That sure is strange????

    Mumbles colder than Morriston???

There is a thick band of precip very close now , that should really show up wether you have rain or snow,if it does not disperse.

My lamposts are still saying yey.

Slightly above moderate at moment, pending a heavy spell.
