  1. Should the expression "thundery rain" not be be used with longer periods of thunderstorm like rain but no thunder, whereas thundery showers could indicate there was the odd rumble of thunder? I'm probably wrong but thats how i use it :(

    For ***** sake !

How can a thundery shower have no thunder. Come on people !! Or are you just winding me up :(

    same here Ross....

to me and I think The BBC they use the expression to say the rain was very heavy...But it doesnt mean a TS

No !! they don't. They use the expression "Thundery" to indicate the presence of thunder. This conversation is becoming surreal (rubbing my eyes and looking again to make sure i am not dreaming)

  2. Thundery shower does not need to contain lightning/thunder to be described as such, but merely the nature of the precipitation as be thunderstorm like.

I don't like the expression being used as such as I find it misleading, and just generally non-sensical tbh, but that's how it is I suppose :(

Feeling quite good here to be honest - lots of hazy sunshine here and warming nicely!! :(

Sorry but thats Silly. A thundery shower has to have thunder, and hence, lightning. Otherwise it is just a shower.

  3. So, a disappointing day here in the SE (no, I'm not moaning, complaining, wingeing or b!tching) but there was so much promise from pretty well all the models, websites, radar and detector stations. I'm sure an analysis will take place afterwards but I'd be interested to see why this year is being so difficult here. (and no! I'm not an IMBY either!!).

Still, thinking positively, there are lots of days of potential left with this weekend and a few days next week that might provide something.

I'm genuinely pleased for everyone who gets big storms, but our time must be soon surely?

A grudging sigh of agreement from me, the dissapointment hits hard. It's hard to come down after such a promising setup just evaporates (no pun intended)

If you look at the distribution of Met Office warnings over the last 24 hrs, they move from the South through to the midlands like a passing front, as they were nowcasting the changing conditions. Surely forecasting is supposed to provide us something more than just, reactions to the weather, as it does what it wants.

I would prefer sometimes, to go back to the way it used to be, when, you would never know about impending storms until a few hours before. If they happened, great, but if they didn't, you hadn't wasted 3 days web watching waiting for them.

    Bugger :D

  4. Just took a trip (3 hours) from here to Selsey Bill. Thunderstorms were frustratingly out to sea. There was a lot of flashing and a few rumbles but precious few CG visible from land. Started to rain, so had to wrap it up and come home.

Looks like its gonna get to land soon but with daylight only a few hours away, it'll be day time storms for us. Much prefer night time storms.

  5. I am fed up.

Around September last year, I remember thinking how disappointing the year had been with respect to storms in the South East. I resigned myself to another 6 month wait, till the spring and then we are bound to get lots of activity.

Here we are in June 2009 and not one single flash or rumble worthy of note, here in Horsham.

It's starting to hurt. Every day, around the world, fantastic thunderstorms are occurring, but here in the UK I just keep getting older and more starved of the one thing that truly thrills me.

If it wasn't for the fact that I have children and responsibilities, I would have moved long ago, to a place where storms are so frequent, that the locals see them as an inconvenience.

When something does ever happen in the UK, the chasing can be quite ridiculous. I have lost storms in the past by becoming completely disorientated on tree lined roads through the countryside. Finding a place to view storms in parts of the South East countryside can be so frustrating. And the roads network is just hopeless if you have to chase during rush hours.

There ! I wish i felt better after that outburst, .....but I don't.

  6. Loving the view on the live streaming

EDIT: There on the move again.

    Seasons

Yeah, but cam is facing NE whilst fun is straight ahead and slightly west. Am I being picky again ?

Wow ! that looks nice

  7. It's why I do it alone. I consider it to be almost a game. Me vs Mother Nature, and trying to predict where to be is fun for me. I like being able to live and die by own sword as it is... :) Only problem is that it is very tough trying to do everything at once when on your own, and you don't have any minions in the back of the van to give you a push when you get stuck in mud :)

I have a wicked stuck in the mud story for you. I think this may well inspire you. Check it out if you have time.

  8. Have taken no2 for my rapidly changing backdrop, If that's OK with you ?

They are all great atmospheric shots, thank you very much.

I bet it's quite interesting, chasing alone. No arguments about where to go etc. 100% focus on the chase, no distractions.

Keep your head down and your wits about you. Good luck.

  9. The NWS report also mentions a further two fatalities as a tree fell on a car in Butler Missouri.

I feel this thread needs a better conclusion than the words that I left hanging there this morning.

I am sure, those involved in chasing, are all too painfully aware of the potential consequences of the ferocious storms, that we all crave so much.

My heart goes out to the people who have suffered as a result of yesterday's weather.

Whilst chasing, clearly is a pleasurable experience for those involved, it needs to be emphasized, that storm chasing and observation, can only serve to increase people's awareness of the dangers of extreme weather and help provide a better understanding of the mechanism's involved.

Chaser's can and often do help to save lives by reporting conditions on the ground, allowing media to provide early warnings to the populations of areas in the firing line.

Please learn from these unfortunate accident's, keep your eyes open and your heads down. Good luck to all you chasers out there and stay safe.

    Good Hunting.

  10. Preliminary storm reports 20 tornadoes have touched down across several US states and

unfortunately 2 fatalities and 5 injuries so far. NWS survey team have also determined that a tornado touched down in Dallas County, Missouri and was confirmed as an EF2 with a width of 400 yards, winds

of 130mph and traveled intermittently along a 4 mile path, this tornado was responsible for one of the deaths.

  11. Looks like my drive home from work!

Don't want to seem petty but, i wish the guys would point the camera straight forward, as the current angle is doing my driving brain no good whatsoever. It looks like we are driving into the left lane all the time. :D Sorry. Good luck people, may the force be with you all !
