Hi i was just wondering why there is a constant area of patchy light ppn which hangs around central southern areas?

I have notice it alot over the last few weeks and at times can be hard to descriminate between real showers and "noise" on radar.

Its definately there and it actually skews the rainfall intensity and accumullation shown by the radar in that area. Rainfall often appears to be very heavy around the Hampshire area only to reduce in intensity as it moves away from that area.

Radar isn't infallible unfortunately, fog, atmospheric conditions, buildings, cloud, airport radars and various other things can cause clutter or block the beams. The met-office filter clutter at their end as much as possible but it's not 100% - if there's a continuation of any anaprop returns in a particular area though I'll drop them a line and ask them to take a closer look.

Freezing fog in particular seems to give echoes on the radar, this has happened often recently in west central Scotland. Although in all fairness it is easy to self-filter these blobs as they don't move and occur in areas which you know intuitively there isn't any precip.

There's an area just about 20 miles north-northeast of my location Paul that varies in size but it's always there, oten dark blue indiciating heavier precipitation, been there for the last 2 weeks, solidly. Not really annoying as it is a small area but thought would let you know.

Sea clutter is another radar issue, but I assume the MetO filter it out.
