July 2013

Very warm, very sunny and dry

This was a fine and sunny Summer month, the warmest of any month since July 2006, also with the highest temperatures since that hot month when it reached 33.6c. The rather rare occurrence here in West Wales of the mercury exceeding 30c. Large amounts of sunshine and a prolonged dry spell lasting 20 days, a rather wet last few days not redressing the balance, it was the driest July since 2006 (30.4mm)

1st – 3rd: Cool, a little sunshine with a little rain and drizzle at times, warmer 4th.

4th – 6th: Building pressure, warmer, dry with some sunshine after fog and low cloud. Clear and chilly by night

7th – 22nd: Dry, very warm/ hot and very sunny., thanks to high pressure stuck firmly over or close to the UK. An outstanding fortnight plus of heat and sunshine, most days having above 10 hours sun. Maxima consistently above 24c with the exception of 16th (22.6c), and hot at times. Hottest day being 30.1c 19th , while it exceeded 26.6c (80f) on 7 days. Nights for the most part clear and refreshingly cool, regularly dropping below 11c, although it only fell to a sticky 16c on 22nd. Some mornings experienced fog which always cleared by 0900.

23rd – 27th: Mostly dry and warm with sunny intervals. A gentle let down from the heat! With more cloud, nights were often warm at around 16c, while highs were a more pleasant 24c. The first rain for weeks arrived during the evening of 24th only amounted to 3.5mm, and was followed by a further mostly dry couple of days.

28th – 31st: Cooler and unsettled with rain at times. A proper cool down to nearer average levels, some rain and showers each day, a solitary clap of thunder 29th. Half inch of rain 28th made it by far the wettest day of this dry month. Much cloudier but with still with sunny intervals. Final day and it was the first sub 20c maximum since July 6th.

HOBART ( pop 215,000 ) is Tasmania's capital city, situated at sealevel at the base of Mt Wellington ( 1270m ). Climate is temperate with a strong maritime influence.

July - Second month of winter

This was the warmest July in terms of mean temperature since records began in 1882, edging July 1988 into second place by 0.1C. The average daily maximum temperature was the equal second highest on record ( 0.2C below the 2010 record ) and the average daily minimum was also the equal second highest on record ( 0.4C below the 1930 record ). This is the second month this year that has made it to the top in terms of record warmth ( March was the other ), and it is the 21st consecutive month in Hobart to be warmer than normal ( 1981-2010 comparison ).

July began mild and windy at first, as the pressure gradient increased as a deep low over sub Antarctic waters approached from the south west. Becoming progressively colder during the first week, with rain at times, increasing to steady rain as winds turned very cold S-SW'ly with snow eventually descending to about the 330m level. Slightly too elevated to cause disruption, this was the first low level snow event of the year, in a year that will usually produce 3 or 4 such events. Clearing skies then produced a day or two of frost, but then winter seemed to come to an abrupt end.

A prolonged cool to mild spell developed just after the first week, to last until the end of the month.  Winds mild NW off the continent, or slightly cooler W'ly, with weak slow moving fronts with some distance between, producing just a shower or two, and cloudy conditions on their passage. The brief interruption to this pattern came in the form of an intense low pressure system around the 20th, which moved in from the west after forming to the south of Western Australia. It slid to Tasmania's south before amplifying to waters just off the east coast, bringing in a very moist onshore SE'ly wind for a day and a half, which gave Hobart its wettest July day since 1990 ( 43mm ), with 100mm being recorded on the mountain summit.

Wettest July overall since 1992, most of it falling in week one and on and near the 20th, coming after a cumulative dry period which began in earnest in October last year.

Average maximum:  13.7 ( +1.5 )

Average minimum:  6.2 ( +1.3 )

Rainfall:  101mm ( average 52mm )

Rain days ( +1mm ):  11

Extremes in daily temperature for July ( Records since 1882 ):

Highest maximum:  18.3 1st and 19th  ( Record 22.1 in 1901 )

Lowest maximum:  7.9  6th ( Record 4.7 in 1888 )

Highest minimum:  11.7  1st ( Record 12.9 in 1985 )

Lowest minimum:  1.2  9th ( Record -2.8 in 1981 )

When did Hobart last have a below-average month?

October 2011 ( -0.2 below 1981-2010 ).

2011 had 5 months below average - probably what you'd expect the median to be.

Persistent high sea surface temperature anomalies...making the coastline more susceptible to positive temperature anomoly. But also a protracted polar jet staying well south of Tasmania, so unusually low cold front activity, and most winds straight off the continent!

An exceptionally warm and sunny month, the warmest since July 2006.  A continuous 3 week warm and sunny spell with minimal rainfall sandwiched between a few cooler and more unsettled days at the start and end of the month.  The maximum of 31.6 on 22 July was the highest recorded since 2006.  From the 5th to the 27th 30 deg C was reached 5 times and only 3 days failed to reach 25 deg C, with the maximum on every day between the 4th and the 29th exceeding the July average.

Statistics for Sandhutton, North Yorkshire.

Note: some of the maxima were probably on the anomalously high side (by up to 2C), sheltered exposure appears to be a problem from May-August when the sun gets around to that part of the garden between 3 and 7pm, as is suggested by comparing with readings from RAF Leeming & Topcliffe.

A warm dry sunny month overall, though a few rainstorms late in the month (most notably overnight 27th/28th) ensured that the month's rainfall total was not far short of the long-term average.  The first four days were mostly cloudy but the 5th-22nd were generally sunny and dry and it was hot at times, notably on the 9th, 12th and 18th when my back garden exceeded 30C, while nearby Topcliffe reported maxima in excess of 28C.  There were two incursions of low cloud off the North Sea (10th, 20th/21st).

The last week continued warm, and although it was wet and changeable, sunshine amounts remained well up to the average.  Sandhutton missed the majority of the thundery activity, with a few occasions when thunderstorms gathered to the south and south-west and then lost their electrification as they approached, but there were some rumbles of thunder and distant lightning flashes on the 29th.

It was certainly a stark contrast with last year's July, which had a staggering shortage of sunshine in the first half of the month.  It wasn't up there with July 2006 for temperature or sunshine amounts but it was certainly the hottest and sunniest summer month since then.

The driest and sunniest July since 2006. It was slightly cooler than 2010, but the mean maximum temperature was the third warmest in 34 years. The first three weeks were predominantly warm, sunny and settled. Conditions were generally calm allowing relatively cool nights, but a sea breeze frequently picked up during the day supressing maximum temperatures compared to further inland. As a result, the absolute maximum temperature of 26.9°C was actually lower than last July.

It was very dry in the first 22 days with only 3.0mm of rain. There was no rain at all from the 3rd - 20th. The final 10 days were much more unsettled with frequent heavy showers and occasional thunderstorms, though the majority missed this location. It remained warm however, with minimum temperatures much higher than earlier in the month and several days recorded lows above 15°C.

Overall a good summer month, but spoilt a little by sea breezes reducing daytime temperatures for much of the first half of the month.
