REPORT

April 2014 was a typical month with something for everyone with a strong emphasis on showery conditions. Rainfall totals were not far from average while temperatures ended somewhat above the long term April mean for us by 0.6C though there were no remarkably warm days with temperatures staying several degrees shy of the magic 21C 70F. There were some chilly nights with grass frosts but no sub zero temperatures were registered at this location. In addition there were quite a few misty and chilly mornings with thick fog on two occasions for several hours around the dawn periods of the 11th & 30th. There was one occasion of thunder on the 20th and hail on the 28th. Sunshine amounts were a little below the average for the area, hardly surprising given the generally unsettled pattern of the month as a whole but this was compensated by strong warmth when it shone. Winds were non problematic leaving the month as a whole non eventful overall.

HOBART population 215,000, capital of Tasmania. Situated at sealevel at base of kunanyi/Mt.Wellington (1270m). Climate: temperate/maritime.

April - Second month of autumn

A 24 hour shot of desert origin air gave Hobart it's hottest April day on record on the 1st, followed by one of it's warmest April nights. Overall, the mean temperature was 0.4C warmer than average making this the 29th calender month out of the last 30 to exceed the 1981-2010 corresponding monthly mean to compare. The odd month out in this run is November 2013.

Weak fronts bringing only a shower or simply a dry wind change, but prefrontal light rain at times as mid latitude cloud streaming in from the far north west often came into play. A colder theme during the final week, with a series of fronts bringing a few showers in their wake, together with snow settle at times to about 900m - the first snows of the season.  A swag of very cool nights during this period.

My statistics for central Reading in April 2014:Average maximum: 16.2Average minimum: 6.7Average for month: 11.5Highest maximum: 19.4 (April 30)Lowest maximum: 11.8 (25)Highest minimum: 12.6 (6 & 7)Lowest minimum: 1.8 (15)Air frosts: 0

Ground frosts: 2

Snow/sleet: none

Days with thunder: 3Rainfall: no data available for this site, and the official Reading university station site has unfortunately had a hardware failure.  Local statistics generally show around 55mm, just above average.

A very warm month with day and night time temperatures around 2 deg C above average and no air frosts.  A pleasant dry and generally sunny spell around mid-month, otherwise more changeable.  Thundery showers in the last week of the month.  The mean maximum was well above average but 20 deg C was never reached in the month, which is unusual for April here.

The third warmest April in 35 years of records, only 2007 and 2011 were warmer. Despite being drier than average, only three Aprils were wetter in the last decade. It was also the third dullest of the last 10 years. Rather than containing any very cold or warm days, it was just consistently above average. Only two days had maxima in single figures and just five days had minima below 5°C. Only five days in the entire month had a mean below average. The month saw 10 days with fog, a new record.

The month started extremely wet with winds from the east bringing overcast, dull and foggy conditions. A flow from the Azores from the 4th then brought warmer, brighter weather with rain at times. The minimum temperature of 12.5°C on the 5th was the warmest since 2007. The middle part of the month then saw anticyclonic conditions bringing a short spell of dry, sunny weather with cooler nights. The final 10 days saw winds generally from the east or south-east. It was wet at first but drier in the final week with sunny spells dring the day allowing quite respectable temperatures but frequent fog during the night.

Overall, a rather benign but warm and dry April.
