REPORT

September was a very strange month overall. It was warmer than average but not seriously so here. Temperatures though always on the warm side of average by day never really got to anything exceptionally high but the longevity of the fine weather through the month made for a very pleasant feel to things. There were some chilly nights and the first Autumn fogs arrived too through the month totalling 14.5hrs of the early mornings. Patchy grass frost was recorded on the morning of the 22nd. Sunshine was somewhat above average reflective of High pressure based weather pattern. It was a drier than average month too with one notable excepton of the 18th when the months only active thunderstorm delivered nearly 20mm of rain in a few hours and there was some strong lightning accompanying this storm too but leaving this aside it was an exceptionally dry month. Winds were very light and I actually recorded a completely calm day in the sheltered location I now live in on the 29th. There was no other unusual weather phenomenon experienced through the period.

September 2014 Lampeter, Ceredigion, Wales

Exceptionally dry; warm and sunny

A fine and warm start to Autumn, although no great heat the dryness was exceptional. This was the driest September on record locally (11mm at nearby Llanybydder in 1986) and the driest of any month in my 12 year record locally (April 2007 14.4mm).  Winds were notably light this month, the highest gust prior to final day being 19mph (gusts of 24mph on 30th) and the mean speed for the whole month a mere 2.8mph. It was also a sunny month with an estimated 174 hours

1st – 5th: A little rain and drizzle to 0900 1st then dry. Cool but eventually sunny 1st the weather then warmed up with sunny periods. Chilly night of 1st minimum 1.8c but not quite a ground frost.

6th – 16th: Dry and often warm with plenty of sunshine. Nights on the other-hand were often cool with some fog forming by some dawns yet always clearing by 0900.

17th - 19th : Warm or very warm and quite sunny, warmest day of the month 24.4c 18th. The sub Tropical air origin meaning nights were warm and quite sticky, the mildest night of the month being 15.0c 18th/ 19th on which rather frequent sheet lightning was observed to the ESE but with no thunder heard.

20th – 22nd: Rather warm and dry, sunny at times

23rd – 26th: Mostly cloudy and cooler, just a little rain at times so ending a 22 day drought (1st to 22nd ).

27th – 30th: Mostly dry and warm, some sunny spells and a few showers

September -  ( First month of spring ) Hobart, Tasmania

Location: Sealevel on the south-east coast at the base of Mt.Wellington ( 1270m ). Climate: Temperate, maritime.

An exceptionally warm start to spring. The record for September warmth was blown away with a mean maximum temperature 0.5C higher than the previous record, set in 1972. For overall mean temperature ( min+max ) it was also a record warm start to spring, breaking the 1972 record by 0.15C. It was also the driest September since 1999.

On the 28th, Hobart recorded it's equal-second warmest September day.

This was the 10th successive month warmer than average ( mean anomaly based on the period 1981-2010 ). This also happens to be the warmest three decade-string on record. The Hobart weather site began operating in 1882.

Average daily maximum17.9 ( +2.5 )

Average daily minimum:  7.8 ( +0.9 )

Rainfall:  19mm ( average 53mm )

Rain days ( +1mm ):  8/from 12

Weaker fronts than usual crossing ever few days brought only a few showers, with only a shower or two in cooler air which followed. At first, light snow settled above about 800m, but was quick to melt. The second half of the month was quite remarkable with warm air from continent, streaming down around stable high pressure centered to the north-east. On the 28th, an active front approached anchored around a deep low well to the south, bringing gales and heat and a very high fire danger rating. The front decayed on arrival bringing only light rain at night ( less than 2mm ). A sunny and mild day followed, before a cold change came thru from the south-west on the afternoon of the 30th...bringing  heftier showers and mountain snow - more typical  September weather in an untypical month overall.

Extremes in daily temperature for September ( Records since 1882 ):

Highest daily maximum:  28.2...28th ( Record 31.0 in 1987 )

Lowest daily maximum:  12.6...15th ( Record 6.1 in 1885 )

Highest daily minimum:  13.1...30th ( Record 18.0 in 1973 )

Lowest daily minimum:  3.2...3rd ( Record -0.8 in 1897 )
