February - Hobart, Tasmania

With a mean temperature of 19.1C this was the  equal 3rd warmest February on record, a tie with 1895. Only 1972 ( 19.5C ) and 2001 (19.7C) have been warmer. Since September, every month here has been warmer than average ( 1981-2010 comparison ). Since October, the monthly anomaly has been above 1C.

Average maximum:  23.8 ( +1.7 )

Average minimum:  14.4 ( +1.8 )

Rainfall:  22mm ( average 40mm )

Rain days (+1mm ): 4/from 9

Every month since September has also been drier than average. This months rainfall fell mostly on the 15th-16th ( 11mm ) and 24th ( 6mm ) on fronts moving in from the west-south west. A shower or two in colder air on the night of the 15th fell and settled as snow near 1200m. Otherwise, a persistently mild to warm and mostly dry month with the occasional south coast clipper front bringing only a brief shower.

Extremes in daily temperature for February ( records since 1882 ):

Highest maximum:  32.7....23rd ( record 40.1 in 1899 )

Lowest maximum:  15.8....16th ( record 9.6 in 1964 )

Highest minimum:  19.7....24th ( record 23.9 in 1912 )

Lowest minimum:  8.2....16th ( record 3.4 in 1980 )

My statistics for central Reading in February 2016:

Average maximum: 9.2
Average minimum: 2.5
Average for month: 5.9

Highest maximum: 15.1 (February 21)
Lowest maximum: 4.4 (13)
Highest minimum: 11.0 (1)
Lowest minimum: -3.5 (24 & 25)

Air frosts: 7
Days with thunder heard: none
Days with fog at 9am: none
No wintry precipitation observed.

Rainfall: Reading University recorded 41mm for the month, which is exactly average for February.
Sunshine: Reading University shows 85 hours for the month, 116% of average.

Overall a close to average month with slightly milder than average day and night time temperatures.  A stormy and very mild start followed by a more settled spell with frequent frosts, The second half of the month saw quiet days and seasonal temperatures, with the exception of the cloudy and mild spell of 20-22 February that gave the month's highest temperature.
