Another example of a thoroughly mild-looking chart from the 19th century (that of the 31st) producing some amazingly low max temps.

The Manchester figures seem more impressive to me, a max of -8.3C on the 24th then down to -17.7C on the 25th. Quite exceptional.

I attribute odd looking synoptics back then to a comparitive lack of data probably.

Those are incredible figures, never knew it got that cold in the NW. -15C Max at Thelwall, -24C min at Wilmslow.. no words can describe how impressive those figures are. Makes Jan/Dec 2010 look mild in comparison.

I do wonder if we'll see anything like that in the future, our closest call is probably 7th Jan 2010.

Great finds! Do you have a link to, or know the source of these observations please?
