  1. Had the most pathetic snow falling last night for an hour or so. It was that light that it soon melted even at 0c on already frozen ground.

Todays top temp was 3oc but the thaw set in much more than yesterday and everywhere is rather wet though the hills around Sheffield are a brilliant white. We have had quite a few wintry showers today and at about 200m they were of snow, some quite beefy.

  2. After last nights snow, here are some pics from this morning and one from this evening. The snow bearly melted in the sun all day and stuck hard in the shade. Very icy at the moment and crunchy under foot. 230m asl. Reached 3oc today.

  3. Snow now falling to all levels here. Starting to stick after 19mm of rain. Current temp here in my garden is 0.2. looks like the heavy band of precipitation isnt moving far and the cold air is really digging in.

Fox house road impassable according to teletext and Holme moss and woodhead now closed.

  4. Went out looking for snow this afternoon, loads around holme moss and snake pass. Just taken 2 hours to come back home. No messing, very heavy snow falling all the way back. We were down top 10 mph and it was a good 3 - 5 cm deep near fox house between sheffield and hathersage. Sleety snow in Sheffield city center itself but still putting slushy deposits down.

  5. Thunderstorm in south sheffield. heavy rain flashs and thunder. Looks worse to the west in the peaks brighter to the east.

just ended in the heavest rain I have seen for ages! Flash Flood!! very high winds!

    Now sunny

    Here, Here.

After a very muggy and misty day with thick cloud and occasional early rain, we had around half an hour of thunder and lightning at around 2.30. This was followed by 5 - 10 minutes of unbelievably heavy rain. Brought flash flooding here as the drains couldnt cope and there is mud and gravel /stones on the road and pavements that have been washed off the grass

  6. Not a bad lightning display. Overall a fairly weak storm but I'd still place it 2nd best of the year. Rainfall wise nothing much to talk about 4mm over an hour period so a long way from a monsoon. Still very warm though. So if you're walking in it you probably don't mind the odd spot of rain.
Just live a mile away from Meadowhead. Hardly any lightning and the rain has stopped at the present time.

I thought you did. Due to the horizontal nature of alot of the rain that fell, (wind blown) the chances are that alot of rain gauges didnt record an accurate account of the rain that fell.

  7. FAO The Pit:

Shows you how a short distance makes all the difference. My brother is 3 miles away in aston and had no rain at all where as my sister is 4 mniles the other way in meadowhead and has been flooded out, and so has the pub she works at on the roundabout. Both report severe CG lightning.

Only occasional lightning now and steady moderate rain.

  8. hi chris..... what a corker!!!!

that was the best storm weve had here for many many years..

just like storms of my youth.... it went black, very black (ok its dusk)

the thunder and lightening was frequent and violent with plenty of cloud-ground

the rain was monsoon like, and the gusty wind was fierce, driving the rain in sheets.

for me, it was a storm to remember, a proper 'old fashioned' storm that i used to get in the 60's early 70's. none of the left trouser leg poor thunder that has been the norm for 30 years, but a decent, strong, storm that did its job and lived upto its name.... at long last!

Just getting the monsoon. Horizontal and torrential!
