  3. Authorities in southwestern Colombia have raised alert levels on Tuesday after a 5.6M earthquake hit the border region, sparking concerns that two nearby volcanoes might erupt in a matter of days. Colombia’s Geological Service have changed the alert level of two volcanoes from yellow to orange. The two volcanoes are Cerro Negro and Chiles, both active on Colombia’s southern border to Ecuador. The orange alert level is defined by the Geological Service as “probable eruption in term of days to weeks.†The earthquake that hit the border region causes a scare on both side of the border. Officials in the Colombian town of Cumbal, near the quake’s epicenter, were quoted as saying by The Associated Press that they formed an emergency committee to survey possible damage. But so far, there were no reports of injuries in the town of 36,000 residents, the majority of them members of an indigenous tribe. “It was really strong, every house†felt it, Jose Diomedes Juezpesan, the town’s top official, told AP. If the volcanoes are to erupt, it will mostly affect the state Nariño. Local state government have started to take security measures in order prevent tragedies. Nariño government officials have recommended suspending school classes, delivered a special communication system to indigenous communities in the area and offered the indigenous communities tents if the evacuate their premise while the volcanoes are on high alert. Neither one of the volcanoes have erupted in the past 160,000 years. http://colombiareports.co/colombia-border-volcano-can-erupt-couple-days/ http://www.volcanodiscovery.com/cerro-negro-de-mayasquer/news/48540/Cerro-Negro-de-Mayasquer-volcano-Colombia-magnitude-58-earthquake-alert-level-raised.html

  12. M 6.0 - COLOMBIA-ECUADOR BORDER REGION - 2014-10-20 19:33:23 UTC 10km deep http://www.emsc-csem.org/Earthquake/earthquake.php?id=405042#map seismotectonics of South America (Nazca Plate Region) The South American arc extends over 7,000 km, from the Chilean margin triple junction offshore of southern Chile to its intersection with the Panama fracture zone, offshore of the southern coast of Panama in Central America. It marks the plate boundary between the subducting Nazca plate and the South America plate, where the oceanic crust and lithosphere of the Nazca plate begin their descent into the mantle beneath South America. The convergence associated with this subduction process is responsible for the uplift of the Andes Mountains, and for the active volcanic chain present along much of this deformation front. Relative to a fixed South America plate, the Nazca plate moves slightly north of eastwards at a rate varying from approximately 80 mm/yr in the south to approximately 65 mm/yr in the north. Although the rate of subduction varies little along the entire arc, there are complex changes in the geologic processes along the subduction zone that dramatically influence volcanic activity, crustal deformation, earthquake generation and occurrence all along the western edge of South America. http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/usb000sp80#summary http://hisz.rsoe.hu/alertmap/site/index.php?pageid=seism_volcano&rid=439698 list of volcanoes close to earthquake

  16. Updated information 19 October 2014 - the extent of the lava The Institute of Earth Sciences has issued a new map of the lava extent, based on radar images from today's surveillance flight by the Icelandic Coast Guard. The total extent of the lavas is now 60.7 km2 (60.3 km2 + 0.4 km2). A considerable lobe has protruded southwards but also a small one to the north; see enlarged map. http://en.vedur.is/earthquakes-and-volcanism/articles/nr/2947 link supplied
