Strange thread this over the past 24 hours. Reams and reams of conjecture about what actually looks like being a complete non-event for almost the whole of the UK, (and nothing much even for the tiny section of the far south of the UK that *might* be affected) this Friday, and yet this evening there appears to be a quite significant 'event' unfolding 600 miles further north which seems to have barely got a mention ?:
couldnt agree more ... its as bad tonight as it was last week where I am at the moment ..
-
awful lot of people going to be very disappointed i reckon (assuming they love the weather being a bit mental) cant see there being much in this for us.
Its being quite mental enough for me right now and I wouldnt be disappointed if it stopped . 62mph gusts in Prestwick right now and im 190m asl above it .. jeepers.

I don't understand why the Met Office are forecasting snow down to 100m, it's going to be more like 400m going by the charts!! When the heavier precip moves in later the upper temps will rise I think it will be a rain and wind event for most!! Northern England will hold onto the cold uppers for a longer period!!!
I really hope youre right... im at 190m asl too and I could really do without the pita it causes..

Hail just started here in rural ayrshire at 190m asl.
looks like Scotland is out of the picture for the Thursday Friday storm met-office just updated
phew..
After last week and today we've done our bit

What's happening in N Ireland!!
M4 buoy malfunctioned, gust to 525mph!! LOL Somethings wrong there!
Malin head gust to 86mph, on a par with last Thursdays system.
I hope its a malfunction ..... do tornados blow that fast?

Looks like the French have a warning out now for the end of the week: http://france.meteofrance.com/vigilance/Accueil
-
They have early warnings for Thurs/Friday which I can't see happening now and yet no warnings for today with storm force winds set to affect the NW forecasting gusts of 78mph here later.
No wind warnings anywhere in the UK until Thursday and yet their maps have 66mph gusts forecast for me later today. Does not compute.

The met office do not seem to be playing a blinder so far....
-
dead calm here now

Nope no mistake, surface pressure forecast (Met Office) has it 947mb by Midnight in the same locality..i'm assuming the XCWeather is the more updated chart. http://www.metoffice...e_pressure.html
Sorry I was being facetious ..
But Id think we should have at least a yellow warning about wind. This storm looks worse than last weeks storm for certain areas up here but still no warnings. Rush hour in Glasgow tomorrow evening could be dicey.
Theres a warning for snow but not for wind ... hmm so as far as our illustrious meteorological leaders are concerned its ok to go hang gliding tomorrow in glasgow.
Edit : OK they do mention wind in their snow warning but not the best imho.

Ive never seen the forecasts/warnings in such a mess.
As things stand on the met office website we (Ayrshire) will have the highest windspeeds and gusts in the UK for storm 1 tomorrow afternoon and evening .. BUT .. we dont even have a yellow warning for wind whilst all of the west of the UK south of us from Cumbria to Lands End and up to Kent does???

Id bet if you tell anybody in here that theyre going to get sustained 82mph wind right over their own house as was forecast yesterday for ronaldsway then they will stop liking the wind rather quickly.
Prob is sometimes that people outside the area expected to be damaged seem to be up for the most enormous storms but NIMBY.
My back yard gets hit more than most id say and I come here to keep informed about things that fill me with dread if they do fall into place in my back yard.
Personally I dont have a problem with the folk who express disappointment when a storm is downgraded ( they are usually quite young in the main ) but I will say that im sure they would stop liking extreme wind if it came to their doorstep as was on the cards yesterday for IOM.
Having "skin in the game" as it were, can have an interesting effect on ones own point of view.

i live in the isle of man - right under that "pink" patch! there are 85,000 other people who live on this rock with me! i have already packed my overnight bag, emergency supplies are in including candles in case of power failures, truely praying that this doesnt happen. local met office giving gust up to 85mph, locally storm force 11. i live on the coast but high enough up not to be lashed by waves. i hope the department of infrastructure give out sand bags to low lying coastal areas for peoples homes. i hope that all companies that deal with power, telecoms, road/sea/air safety, media etc will be ready to deal with the aftermath. stay safe.
I just looked at xc weather for ronaldsway and its currently predicting sustained winds of 82mph. cripes!

This thing just wont go away. It started getting really bad at 10am this morning and its still going strong with Prestwick seeing sustained 47mph and crazy window bending gusts hitting my house every 20 mins or so.
Getting fed up with it now!

^^ I realise from his vehicle but just wondering how come the vehicle battery doesnt go flat when the engines not running ? He must have some sort of back up batteries perhaps ??
Coast your ability to come up with these pictures never ceases to amaze and amuse me.....especially so quickly !
These types of equipment use hardly any power. Its almost like using a couple or three laptops. Even the transmission equipment will be very low power. Im wondering if its Inmarsat or Iridium or the like. Usually when vehicles get mods for mobile comms they get mods to their batteries and alternators too but itd be no greater power draw than the headlights.
-
Dumb question probably but Im intrigued to know how Graham keeps all that equipment he's running charged up whilst on location ?
Probly all charges from his vehicle. Anybody know what his comm link is?

Hmm ... makes you wonder if anybody really has a clue in the met office ivory towers .... last week was just as bad as this and at the time I was under a met office red alert ... today im under a yellow alert for snow and none whatsoever for wind .... pfft.
