  1. Ditto here Jello. Just juckied out the window and cars, grass and roads turning white.

Lucky you! Absolutely none here down in Dublin!

I love the word 'juckied' - had never heard it before! I'm thinking it could have come from the Gaelic d'fhéach (meaning 'looked'), pronounced in a similar way to juckie.

Unfortunately, usually most snow coming off the Atlantic is of the very wet variety. Damn that Gulf Stream! :p

  2. In Britain, you're lucky that the freezing weather is sticking around for longer with you. In Ireland, we're losing it sooner. closedeyes.gif

It's expected to become milder by the end of the working week here. It's already somewhat less cold.

I was wondering if any of the weather boffins on here can tell me if a Big Freeze is back on the cards for both Britain & Ireland for mid to late Dec?

I heard elsewhere that freezing weather & snow were coming back around the 17th or 18th Dec. If true, this would be wonderful for Xmas.

  3. Autumn? Not half! Just returned from a trip down the fields with 12lbs of fat, juicy elderberries (the 'English grape') - enough to make 4 gallons of fabulous wine!

Ah cool! I've never tasted Elderberries. Are they definitely safe to consume? I heard they were mildly toxic with cyanide?

I love all the mushrooms and berries of autumn. Blackberries are my favourite.

  4. One thing is certain this year is very different to last year and again out of the norm from what we are used to? What does this mean? We don't know because we aren't acustomed or used to such patterns so early on. It could be exceptionally mild, it could be average who knows, Amser y ddegnys (time will only tell)

I agree. A colder-than-normal autumn could the subsequently disappoint us with a mild or normal UK winter. I'm hoping for a snowy winter and do have a feeling it'll be a repeat of last winter. But that's just a hunch and nothing else! That meteorology is an inexact science is both exhilarating and frustrating in equal measure!

Time will tell indeed. Amser y ddegnys in Welsh is lovely to see. In Irish we say that time is a good story-teller: Is maith an scéalaí an aimsir.

  5. LOL..ah no im not that bad. I was travelling on business and it just happened to be perfect timing.

I wasnt expecting the snow this morning in Dublin. Its cool when that happens.

Ah, I see. The Wicklow Mountains have also been getting tonnes of snow recently. (much nearer you!)

  6. On Sunday, it seems the strongest winds will be in northern and western France, with Brittany taking the biggest hit.

The south of England will certainly have a very windy day too but won't be damaging.

  7. I think this winter has been remarkable in how we've had low temps but very little snow to show for it. It's been one big let-down as far as I can see. Yes, early Jan was bad but more for ice than for any snow. It's always been very marginal - I've never seen so much sleet in my life! diablo.gif

  8. Morning everyone. Its a cold dull frosty morning here in Derry. Whats everyones thoughts on wednesdays event? I'm taking it with a pinch of salt after there was advisories issued at the end of last week for Sunday but this never happened except for Co Down and Armagh. Can we expect the snow that the Meto are advising on or is it gonna be a marginal event?

Just seeing the the Meto have now issue a watch for thursday aswell. Will hight matter for this or should we all see something wintry?

I think a few northern counties could see snow but only those away from coasts. I don't think Down, Antrim or even Derry will see snow, except for higher ground. I could see Tyrone, Fermanagh, Cavan, Monaghan, etc getting snow. Anywhere south of here will see sleet or rain.

  9. Ireland's chances of seeing snow have improved significantly today.

I dunno what this southeast thing is about, to me the north and west are the ones very likely to see snow.

In fact Ireland could get disruptive snow from this, certainly a live risk

How can you see that? Met Eireann are predicting rain till at least Wed. When are you talking about?

Looking at the models, the UK & Ireland never seems to grab any of the genuinely cold air over to the NE. I think any snow next week will be reserved for higher ground.

  10. I know the weather in Ireland at the moment is probably as tedious as it is here but watch this space - next week looks excellent for Ireland.

I don't know about that! The Irish met office are predicting rain (sleet for higher ground) for the northern half of the island early next week. There isn't even a hint of snow so far.

This current 'cold spell' is very much a damp squib from the perspective of Ireland at least.

I'll get my fix of snow skiing next week during mid-term anyway! :cc_confused:

  11. I think the bottom line is we live in the UK and we don't get extreme weather, but we do get changeable weather which keeps it interesting. I like a nice storm, I love a bit of sunshine, I'm also partial to some strong winds and a bit of snow. All in moderation. What I find disturbing are the people on here who would only be happy if there was some kind of weather that would cause severe disruption to peoples lives. That is just sad.

The reality is, nobody can change the weather and change what's coming. So, if people like storms/snowmageddons or anything else that's 'disruptive', that's their prerogative.

Perhaps its down to living in a temperate climate that perhaps draws people to the extremes. I've often said that eventually lets say there was winter after winter of cold and snow would this forum be as busy? Then would the 5cm snowfall be derided as not upto much, even this winter there have been times when peoples expectations became too high, I think it's a case of the more you have the more you want, and then it has to be bigger and better than the last time.

I think people have to view the model discussion in the context that the majority of people in here during the winter like the cold and snow, they're on here because they're looking for that in the models, just as perhaps people in the summer are looking for those hot spells and Spanish plumes, perhaps with thunderstorms.

Some people are more objective than others, some show their emotions, toys out of prams happens occasionally but that is unavoidable, it might seem strange to some people viewing the thread, how can people get so happy, distraught, hysterical etc over cold and snow. But thats what people do, thats why they're not robots! And thats why this forum can be at times frustrating but equally entertaining and also people can learn a bit more about the models and the weather in general.

I like the fact that there are other people out there just like me who love the snow, I don't care if other people think it's childish or sad or whatever,I still even now get excited if its going to snow, still look at in awe and wonderment and thank my lucky stars that I'm able to enjoy the beauty of it. And even if it doesn't snow here in the valley theres always the Pyrenees to look at so I feel lucky either way.

    That's a nice post.

The Pyrenees are beautiful in the snow. I've skied there twice before. I think there's an innate beauty in snow and snowflakes look amazing up close.

I'll be skiing in the Tatra Mountains next week, so I hope I don't miss the snow in Ireland next week, if there is any. Hope it awaits my return home! :)
