  1. Hi Jo

I'm carrying the expensive bits hand luggage, spare batteries/chargers etc I'm going to risk in the hold, along with the tripod. My main camera is a bit of a beast, so I'm still deliberating on taking a sturdier tripod to cope with it, or maybe stay close to the ground/car roof etc using a sandbag.

A handy hint for using tripods in windy conditions, attach a couple of those wrist/ankle velcro weights to the lower legs to help with stability

  2. Some impressive kit lists!

I'm travelling a bit lighter than planned as I wasn't able to get the HD broadcast cam for the weeks I am touring, but I still will be weighed down with :

    Canon 1D MKIIN

Canon EOS 300 as a back up

    Panasonic Lumix pocket cam

    Sigma 10-20 EX

    Sigma 70-200 EX

Sigma 1.4x extender (saves taking the longer zooms)

    Remote shutter releases

    Spare batteries

A pile of SD and CF cards

    1Gb External disc

    samsung Notebook

    MS GPS (Pharoah)

    zoom gorilla pod and compact

    flash gun

    assorted cables and power options

add to that some clothes, money, cards and documents

Not sure if I'll get away with just hand luggage......

  3. Hi Tony

The 2 x adapters are light killers, and will make autofocus struggle or just give up. The graininess is noise as the the camera is compensating for the low light reaching the sensor by upping the ISO to cope with low light.

I only use the 1.4x adapter, it will make an f4 lens work as an f5.6, so makes life easier. If you are using a lens with a maximum aperture less than f4 then an adapter is only really useful in bright light for shots that don't involve any sort of action.
