  1. (I think he jesting MB :winky: )

So 40 years ago we got this type event, but not since? So a once in 40 year event then?!!

Realistically it will be more snow than many members here have seen in this part of the world in their lifetime (not mine unfortunately - too old!!) See you in Princes Park for a snowball fight tomorrow?

I knew one of you would point that out. So my reply is that we are on the turn now. 30 years or so of mild winters is coming to end according to some experts. Check my link below out and make your own minds up. :hi:

  2. Can you just ban people who keep moaning! we have synoptics that everyone thought not possible again and all i read is moaning and toys thrown out of prams! The snow is being shared around, the se has got days of snow chances to come and as i keep saying but which seems to be completely ignored is that the main snow risk as we go forward will be for the east and se so let others from areas that haven't seen a flake yet just enjoy their snow, or as the case might be not enjoy it as we're talking serious amounts, i'm sure the thought of power cuts isn't exactly enticing given the current temps.

So i'm going to lose it big time soon if i have to listen to anymore moaning, as Coast says this is a once in a 20/25 year event, you may never see this again for decades!

Are you serious, banning people? That's a little harsh isn't it?

That aside what makes you think this is a once in a 20/25 year event. Up to 40 or so years ago this kind of set up was common in winter time.

  3. Nice update for our part of the world:

UK Outlook for Sunday 10 Jan 2010 to Tuesday 19 Jan 2010:

For Sunday (10th) and Monday (11th) snow showers are expected to continue to affect eastern parts of the UK, more especially from East Anglia southwards where there will be some strong winds, making it feel bitterly cold. Elsewhere it is likely to be largely dry, with some sunshine, but it will still feel very cold. Areas of freezing fog may also affect some northern parts. The very cold conditions look like persisting through much of next week with eastern and especially southeastern areas seeing a continuing risk of sleet or snow showers whilst western and northern areas see a good deal of dry, bright weather. There are indications that a change to somewhat less cold conditions may occur during the weekend of 16/17 Jan and into the following week.

    Issued 12:57Z

I think we can take that with a pinch of salt (if there's any left). They said that last week for this coming week.

  4. Surely this is a weather forum, to discuss weather and at the moment, cold. It is not just to discuss major blizzards and severe weather, if it's too dull and boring for you, maybe you've found the wrong site. Espicially if your intent on moaning every 15 minutes if you don't get a blizzard or heavy snow.

This is a COLD weather forum. Conversation and information on winter aspects for our region thanks very much. But for the record:

    Local temp: 2 deg C

Slight frost, clear and calm conditions.

  5. As I see it anyway, it could well be with a bit of luck that most of us will get enough snow to enjoy safely, but not these ridiculous amounts that will shut everything down.

Rather than concentrating on next weekends event, and hoping for armeggedon, it might be better to look at the snow opportunities for earlier in the week within a more reliable time period. It is possible that the crippling blizzard threat towards next weekend may not materialise.

    But does that really matter?!

It might actually be as well it doesn't for the welfare of many of us - especially on the basis that by then nearly all of us will have plenty of snow to enjoy that can last in the cold air that looks to be with us for quite some time - but avoiding at the same the very unpleasant domestic and business side effects of anything extreme. Surely that is the best outcome to hope for.

Be careful what you wish for comes to mind.

    I have to disagree.

What if we are in the start of a period of severe winters for 10 to 20 years or even longer? This is possible and we must adjust accordingly. For too long now we have been spoilt with mild winters and hot summers (spanning approximately 25 years). The economics of Scandinavian countries (or Canada) are not affected by cold snow bound weather.

  6. I'm quite new to this forum. But I am not going to pull any punches in this particular posting. A snow shower here, another one there. A cm here or two. It's simply not good enough! What we all want and long for is a raging blizzard for 2 or 3 days with massive drifting and for the winter to be as severe as 1963 or 1947. It will come, it has to come. Enough said.

  7. Yes Tom, a tiny tiny dusting. I can cope with that. I was 4years old in the winter of 62/63 (do the maths). Like you I have seen extreme winters and extreme snow events. As nice as it would be to have a historical snow event it's a bit scary too. I'm a nurse. staff wouldn't get into work. Ambulances wont get through. It's a life threatening situation really.

    Jan

A point well made. When it gets severe it can be life threatening too. Let's hope the elderly are checked on during the winter.
