  1. That's the kind of forward thinking we could have done with in aboyne in the run up to storm arwen but all we got was a 2hr notice to pick up kids early around 5hr after the red warning was issued. Good result for you as reckon there will be problems on the roads.
  2. Agree looking very ropey at the moment. Alford, Tarland, Aboyne and anywhere above 100m could be tricky in the afternoon tomorrow.
  3. After lunchtime tomorrow we're under 528dm air and I reckon we could have a decent cover of snow here in Aboyne by tomorrow evening. Marginal early tomorrow I feel and perhaps a little more altitude required so might be a rain to snow event. Intensity might help though. Time to get the sledges and snowboards out again for the nearby field.
  4. Plenty opportunities ahead for winter. We've had a few inches of new snow here today and some heavy snow falls coupled with high winds. Ensembles show nothing is certain beyond a week. Think a lot of the folk writing off winter need a break from the models as it's a chore reading this thread at times and seeing such ridiculous commentary. Last winter was quite severe for us in NE Scotland. 50+cm lying snow. -23degC and frozen pipes in a modern heated house! I don't believe we will have to wait long for another cold spell. Look at the spread on these ensembles and forget anything in the models beyond 7 days.
  5. Winter's just begun and we have to read through the constant moaning in this thread (thought there was another thread for that). So far winter has been about average for us in NE Scotland and I can't write off winter as quick as most folk on this forum tend to do. Things can and have changed very quickly with the synoptics over the years. I've been watching the patterns and following weather models for 30+years. Just because the models are not showing narnia folk shouldn't be writing off winter and getting downbeat. The ensembles are useful out to about 5 days in my opinion. About this time last year we had 50+cm lying snow here in Aboyne and with us locked down had to resort to snowboarding in nearby fields. We've not had that yet this winter but have had a white Christmas. Don't trust anything you see beyond 5-7days is my advice. The spread in the ensembles beyond 5 days tells me we could be knee deep in snow next week or firing up the BBQ for steaks (tend to do the later regardless of whether I have to wade through snow or not). Keep your chins up and don't let it get you down as nobody and I mean nobody on this forum knows what's beyond next week when it comes to UK weather.
  6. White Christmas in Aboyne. Currently -1degC. Might be another ice day. Merry Christmas.
  7. Official white Xmas 2021 in Aboyne. Light covering but proper snow has fallen after midnight. North sea convective machine in operation. Don't expect more than a couple of cm but still festive all the same. Proper winter will be with us in a few weeks I reckon. That cold over Scandanavia will show its hand soon.
  8. Officially a white Xmas 2021 for Aboyne. Snowing at the moment 00:15. Showers moving in from the North Sea. ?️. I suspect we won't have to wait too long till we see some proper winter weather.
  9. Yes light dusting of snow here in Aboyne tonight after leaving local restaurant. ?️
  10. Thanks for all the weather forecasts you brought us in the days before the internet. I couldn't even name a modern-day weather forecaster nowadays but your name and the weather will always go hand-in-hand. Nowadays with all the info available, I prefer to forecast myself (not for others) and this passion I have for it was embedded in me from a very young age watching you and your colleagues present the daily weather and countryside forecasts. Enjoy your Christmas and retirement. Cheers Mike
  11. -3degC at the moment. Was still -7degC at 11am. Very white with hard frost. Might be some problems later this evening with ice when the precipitation band passes over us.
  12. All this talk of BBQ weather. Here in Aboyne I was using the BBQ early this year when we had some pleasant BBQ conditions. Also had - 23degC after a few ice days. Think folk are overreacting to current model data. It can flip very quickly back to proper winter solutions just as quick as recent days events. I still reckon we'll see a white Xmas here in Aboyne. Currently -3decC outside (was -7degC at 11am). For me ensembles are a guide to the reliable and they move quickly as small changes elsewhere in the world have an impact. The weather has been quite different for the last year so don't be surprised to see a quick shift in the coming days.
  13. About 30cm lying snow now here in Aboyne but difficult to gauge with depths varying everywhere. I cleared the patio table last night so nice top up of dry powder overnight. Just cleared ours and elderly neighbours drives and paths. Hard work but good alternative to the usual jogging and cycling. Need to sort out our 6yr olds snowboarding ramp in the back garden now as it's looking smaller with all the new snow around it. Might be a streamer lining up to follow the river Dee early afternoon. Have had huge snow falls from Dee streamers before.
  14. Very heavy snow here in Aboyne tonight. A little on the wet side but can't complain. Difficult to gauge depth and spent 2hr shovelling snow this morning and expect I'll be doing the same again tomorrow. Have had two great days snowboarding with my 6yr old son after home schooling in a field 5min from the front door. Missing a poma but can't complain. Expect the snow might end up too deep tomorrow but taking my skis with me. Still viewing some ridiculous accumulated falling snow totals during the next week.
  15. I live in Aboyne and I've been viewing some ridiculous weekly accumulated snowfall forecasts on the various models over the last 24hr. Ventusky app currently showing 70+cm over the next week for Aboyne. Last night it was showing 90+cm (these totals based on the GFS run). The ICON run showing less but still significant. It's snowing at the moment but not coming to much. We have about 2in of snow at the moment lying on top of ice that's been here since Xmas. I travelled for groceries yesterday to Westhill and Inverurie and was very surprised there was little to no snow in those locations. I'm not sure what to expect here in Aboyne over the next week or so but we're prepared with plenty sledges and snow boogieboards... and emergency supplies in case of power outages.... It was -10°C here in the early hours of yesterday morning.
  16. 18+degC at home this afternoon. Scottish record broken. Only seems like a few days since the last of the large snowman in the back garden melted. Enjoying the early warmth while we have it. Not removing the winter wheels yet though.
  17. Still a good cover in place here. View a couple of miles from the house on the way home tonight. Icy roads in the mornings last couple of days at -4c with water run off freezing overnight.
  18. Good days sledging today. View of Mount Keen in the distance. Just over 3,000ft peak.
  19. Difficult driving conditions on the way home from work. Sunny all day kingswells. This was the back road home to avoid the chaos on the roads around Deeside Aboyne. Good snow cover at home for sledging etc....
  20. -11.5C leaving Aboyne for work this morning. Hoping the Lecht or Glenshee get a wee top up soon to kick off the skiing season properly. Snow cover still looking thin at higher altitudes on the East side of the Cairngorms.
  21. Aboyne -8.5C min overnight and 5cm fresh snow in the early hours. No new snow at kingswells overnight. Fun drive to work - nothing like cutting first tracks through the snow with 4wd and winter tyres.
  22. Same here for Aboyne although still got a fair snow cover in place from last week and down to -7c this morning when I hit the road for work. Hoping the Lecht gets a good dumping over the next 10 days or so as planning a mornings skiing early Feb. Should be good cover in place by then. Only the magic carpet and Robin open today - shocking.
  23. It's at the Muir of Dinnet National Nature Reserve. Nice walks through forrests with left over huge glacial boulders. The vat was carved out by melt water during the last ice age. There is a small tourist building at the car park that is left open for visitors to enter and read up on all the wildlife and history of the area. Well worth a visit. We're there a good few times a year as only 5min up the road. Great for all ages but entrance to the vat itself requires a little navigation over some rocks that a stream runs through - very icy today. Will head up for some more winter photos when we get our next dump of snow.
  24. Trip a couple of miles along the road to the burn'o'vat today. Scenery is always great there but winter is the best.
