  1. The sunshine returned today after yesterday's rainy blip. Much colder than recently with the temp falling to 4.9C overnight and reaching a max of 13.8C. Sunshine total of 7.54 hours. Current temperature is 8.2C
  2. Probably between 20 and 25C but I rate sunshine above temperature so 16C and sunny is a better summer day for me than 22C and cloudy. When I went to the Costa del Sol in April 2008 I got what I consider ideal summer weather and the maxes were 18-24C with blue skies every day. Those temperatures are not far off typical UK summer temperatures but the often cloudy skies make it feel not too good in this country.
  3. Easily the best day I have experienced here this year and all the better for being at the weekend No 5pm cloud up as happened through the week with sun almost all day long something not seen since May 26th. Sun total of 12.1 hours. Temp maxed at 23.3C making it the 3rd warmest day of the year and warmer than any day of summer. Down to 17.2C now as the sun as set but inside is still 25.7C.
  4. A fantastic day until the 5pm curse struck yet again. Sunny almost all day long with a max of 22.0C then as soon as it gets to 5pm in rolls the cloud from nowhere and the temperature takes a plunge. 4pm: 20.1C and sunny 5pm: 15.1C and cloudy For anyone working normal office hours this week has been garbage. Sunny mornings and afternoons followed by the same awful grey, cloudy evenings we have been enduring since the clocks went back. Just utterly infuriating.
  5. I thought it would be decades before we had another summer as bad as 2007 but the margin by which 2012 has turned out to be worse is just staggering. Just 311.4 hours of sun here for summer which is only 62% of average and below the 1st percentile. It's only 6 hours above average for autumn and 30 hours more than last winter. However if you exclude the wasted early morning sunshine when everyone is still asleep it would work out at less. As a percentage of possible hours it would be about 20% making it the cloudiest of any season since winter 1971/72. Here is the anomaly map from the Met Office which yet again shows my area suffering the worst of the lack of sunshine. http://www.metoffice...y_1981-2010.gif July recorded only 85.7 hours of sun making it the dullest month of 2012 to date. You couldn't make it up. I really could not have believed it possible for a summer to be as bad. It was like spending 3 months on a subarctic island. Thankfully it’s all over now and September seems to be on track to be sunnier than all of the summer months which could be achieved even if the monthly total ended up below average.
  6. A clear and sunny start to the day - the first time I have seen any clear skies here since May. The sky partly filled with cumulus as the day went on and as usual the evening was the cloudiest part of the day. I was at least able to sit outside in the garden in the sun for a while though now the top half, nearest the house, is completely shaded during the evening now and won't be long before the bottom half is too. Max was 19.1C with 9.09 hours of sun. Currently 14.2C.
  7. Warmest day of the year here with the temp hitting 24.5C. Not that there was any chance to enjoy it stuck at work and cloud rolled in at 3:30pm wiping out the sunshine. By 5pm it was actually raining. So rather than leave early to enjoy the sun I got to stay late waiting for the rain to clear Temperature down to just 17.4C now and it's a vile grey evening like 90+% have been since 1st April. With the rain and a total of just 5.2 hours of sun this has to go down as the worst "warmest day of the year" I can remember. All the others have been sunny for the bulk of the day and completely dry.
  8. Yet another cooler, duller and wetter than average summer month. The 7th consecutive August with below average sunshine to round off the dullest summer since 1912 and the dullest ever April to August period. It was the wettest summer month I have recorded since I started in 2005 though unusually for recent years much of the rainfall was as a result of heavy intense convective downpours with the rainfall duration the lowest of any summer month since June 2010. Would have been okay if the sunshine had been decent but it was awful so another poor summer month - the 19th in succession. Mean Max: 17.5 (-0.5) Mean Min: 11.0 (+0.3) Mean: 14.3 (-0.1) Highest Temp: 23.2C (18th) Lowest Temp: 4.0C (31st) Rainfall: 112.8mm (208%) Rain days: 16 Wet days: 12 Rain duration: 42.1hrs Sunshine: 121.2hrs (75%)
  9. Went down to 4.0C here - the coldest August min by far in the 8 years I've been recording. Previous lowest was only 5.4C (in 2005 and 2007). 2.3C at Dyce which was the lowest there in August since 1995.
  10. 299.2mm here easily beating the 2007 total of 261.4mm. Probably the wettest summer since 1985. One of the coldest ever summers as well but it has been the catastrophic lack of sunshine which has been the worst aspect. Easily the dullest summer since 1912 with the total yet to reach 300 hours. Just passed 295 hours today and the final total could end up below the autumn average of 305 hours Truly the most depressing season I have ever known.
  11. A lovely sunny day until 5pm when, as soon as work was over, the miserable infuriating summer from hell struck again as skies clouded over, temperatures took a plunge and it started raining Just a light shower which produced nothing measurable but it remains yet another awful grey evening with the temperature having fallen to 15.8C, from a max of 18.3C. It was still on 18C at 5pm. Looking like yet another week when the garden is out of bounds and all time is spent cooped up indoors.
  12. Yet another totally dire day. Infuriating cloud that won't break up or shift despite the satellite image showing clear skies in all directions. Just the same story as the whole ghastly summer really. Very cool as well at only 13.7C. This weekend has been a write-off just like pretty much every weekend in this summer of endless grey muck. Nothing more than a few glimmers of sun since Thursday. No doubt the cloud will break up completely just after sunset, like it did yesterday, only to reform in time to ruin another day
  13. A nightmare of a day here with 28.4mm of rain, much of it falling in little over an hour and a half with peak rain rate of 117.6mm/hr Local burn has burst its banks and flooded like I have never seen before and there are reports of flooding across the city with cars submerged. http://www.bbc.co.uk...etland-19381929 A miserable end to the worst summer ever seen in these parts.
  14. Went below 10C for the first time since the 11th with a min of 9.4C. This was followed by a sunny day with some interesting convective clouds though there was just one light shower just after 6pm, totalling 0.4mm. Sunshine totalled 7.7 hours with a max of 20.1C. Now had 6 consecutive warmer than average days compared to only 12 in the preceeding 81 days.
  15. A day of sunshine and showers which were torrential at times. I recorded a rate of 86mm/hr at 4:20pm then 87.2mm/hr at 7pm, which are the highest rain rates this year. Total rainfall for the day was 12.8mm, sunshine 6.3hrs and max temp 19.5C.
  16. Warmest day of the summer here, by far, with a max of 23.2C but not quite warmest of the year which remains 23.4C on 26th May. The day started grey but the sun finally broke through about 11am though the best of the weather was not until evening with the max reached just after 5:30pm. Been sat in the garden all evening but come in now as the sun has gone and temp is down to 17.9C.
  17. Yet another ridiculously poor day. Very cool and wet with light levels typical of 3pm on a cloudy December day until 2pm when the rain let up but the depressing damp grey muck remained until now when some brightness has filtered through but not a lot. Currently at the max for the day of 16.9C though most of the day has been no higher than 14C. 10.2mm of rain today with 29.4mm in the past 4 days meaning we have now surpassed our monthly average. The misery just goes on and on and on.........
  18. I'm in shock. We actually managed to get a lovely sunny day that hasn't been spoiled by showers or the temp being too low. A real rarity this summer. Sun total 10.21 hours with no rain though we had another 5.4mm late yesterday night. Max temp was 18.9C and currently down to 15.5C with the sun now gone.
  19. Not one day as warm as 21.4C here all summer, a dismal max of 15.3C today and just one above average day in the past 12. I'm certainly not laughing. Here are the warmest summer maxes I've recorded since I got my weather station in 2005: 2005: 25.9 2006: 30.4 2007: 25.7 2008: 26.6 2009: 26.8 2010: 23.8 2011: 26.0 2012: 21.0 (so far) It's evident just how desperately poor this year has been. Although, had the hot spell in June 2011 occurred just 3 days earlier, last year would have been almost as bad as it didn't exceed 21.6C after 3rd June until the late September heatwave when I recorded 23.0C on the 30th. Dyce has managed 21.9C as a summer maximum. Every summer there has reached at least 22C since records began in the 1940s so another record may be broken if this warm spell fails to deliver. GFS is predicting 22-23C in NE Scotland this weekend but after what we've had to endure this summer I'll believe it when I see it even though that is still lower than what we would normally expect for the warmest days of August/summer.
  20. Yet another vile day - one of the very worst. Thick fog and drizzle all morning and it felt like someone was trying to suffocate me with a soggy blanket on my walk to work. The fog lifted by afternoon but it remained miserable with featureless overcast skies. Haven't seen any blue sky since I was in Spain on Sunday and it appears that there has been constant overcast murk here without a break since Saturday morning Max temp today below average again at only 15.3C which is the current temperature. Diurnal range of just 2C. Drizzle amounted to 0.2mm.
  21. August has so far proven every bit as dire as June and July here. No pattern change at all - just the same diabolical levels of sunshine (currently at only half the average), relentless below average maxima and above average rainfall. Only difference is maxima are just 1C below average compared to over 2C below in June and July. Barring a miracle this can pretty much be confirmed as the worst ever summer for Aberdeen (since at least 1881 when sunshine recording started) with 2011 and 2012 making up the worst pair of consecutive summers. So endlessly cold, dull and depressing it’s beyond ridiculous. Here are the grim stats up to 13th August: Mean Max: 15.3C (-2.2C) Sunshine: 227hrs (56%) Rainfall: 215.8mm (164%) Mean max for June/July was just 14.8C and at Dyce 15.0C which beat the previous lowest record of 15.3C in 1987. It was the coldest June/July combination in the Aberdeen area since at least 1903 when the site at Old Aberdeen (much closer to the coast) recorded a mean max of 14.9C. It was also the dullest June/July on record. The lack of warmth and sunshine has been just staggering. Only 11 out of 75 days warmer than average, all occurring in isolation with the exception of 5th and 6th July. June monthly max 19.0C, July monthly max 21.0C, August so far 19.9C. Last summer it failed to reach 22C after 3rd June. Even in the 1960s the lack of warmth was never this bad and no summers were as sunless as either this year or 2007.
  22. Back from 15 days in Spain to find conditions have changed not one iota from the record breakingly awful sunless gloom endured throughout June and July. Back from a fantastic, bright, colourful world where only shorts and t-shirt are necessary to a monotone grey hell where jacket, jumper and central heating are needed. It's been a vile two days since I got back. Sunless and featureless with brief periods of drizzly rain yesterday followed by torrential rain and thunder overnight which dried up in the morning to leave another drizzly, murky day with zero sunshine. Cool maxes of 16.8C yesterday and 16.7C today but barely any lower at night with minima of 14C. Rainfall overnight amounted to 13.6mm with a peak rate of 64.4mm/hr. Further drizzle during the day was not measurable. Currently 15.8C, misty and murky with a ghastly south east wind. There isn't even the merest blip of decent weather here. It's just awful every day.
  23. Exactly the same here. I don't know what it would actually take to get decent summer weather here any more. Certainly no sign of summer here this week. It's been another week of unbearable cloudy rubbish that does nothing to alleviate the chronic lack of sunshine over the past 8 weeks. I have now endured 25 mostly cloudy/overcast days in a row. It's incredulous. Only 2 days have been warmer than average here in the past week: 20.8C on Sunday and 21.0C yesterday, both of which managed only 3 hours of sun, while today has been the only completely dry day (so far). Sunshine total for July currently stands at a staggeringly awful 44.8 hours. We need to start seeing brilliantly sunny days with 10hr+ sun to avoid this being the worst "summer" month ever recorded (in over 130 years) and that doesn't look like happening. Not one day so far has even managed 6 hours of sunshine. This is not summer. It is a living hell. Thankfully I'm off to the Costa Brava for a fortnight soon so will get a respite from the torture of having to suffer grey skies day in day out. It has made me feel ill, fed up and sick to the stomach and I just wish I was able to leave for good because something has gone drastically wrong for the conditions being endured this summer to even be possible
  24. My statistics for the first half of what can only laughably be described as summer. 1st June - 16th July 2012: Mean Max: 14.0C (-2.8C) Sunshine: 121.3hrs (47%) Rainfall: 143.6mm (173%) Rain Days: 34 (+12) It really couldn't be any worse. The temperatures are subarctic and lack of sunshine phenomenal. The first half of summer 1916 was about as cold but not quite as dull. Otherwise I don't think there is any other year that could put up a credible challenge to deny 2012 the unwanted accolade of worst ever first half of summer. Even more remarkable over a quarter of the sunshine was recorded in the first four days of June giving a total of only 87.6 hours for the 6 weeks to 16th July - a spectacularly awful 38% of average and clearly well outside the bounds of normal variability. July sunshine continues to be dismal without precedent. 21.3 hours to date and a max daily total of 4.3 hours would be poor for this stage of December
