  1. Yet another miserable depressing day. Cold, wet and sunless with more completely featureless skies. This was the sky during the brighter part of the day before the murk and rain moved in: Precisely the same dismal uniform grey we've been subjected to all day long on about 50% of days this month and for the majority of the time on most other days Temp reached just 11.7C today so another well below average day. Only one day has been above average this month and it was blighted by heavy downpours. Just 16 days out of the past 82 have been seen above average maxima . When will this nightmare end? Don't know anyone who isn't sick to death of this unrelenting dross and asking what the hell has happened to our weather. This vile month is so repugnant it's making even April and the first three weeks of May seem decent by comparison .
  2. Much more sun than forecast with just short of 12 hours. However yet another below average day with a max of only 15.0C A fine evening for going out a walk but certainly not warm enough to sit in the garden after work. At least the sun has warmed the indoor temperature to 22.9C so a rare occasion this month with no need for central heating.
  3. Sunshine totals I've recorded: 1st - 19th Dec 2011: 61.3hrs 1st - 19th Jan 2012: 71.3hrs 1st - 19th Feb 2012: 63.8hrs 1st - 19th June 2012: 57.7hrs I only recorded 12 days in the entire winter with less than half-an hour of sunshine. So far there's been 9 in this sorry excuse of a summer and with the dismal outlook the winter total could easily be surpassed by the end of the weekend. It really is summer 2007 all over again. Only difference is it's colder. Mean max still running at 1C below the record low for June with nothing but very low maxima in the outlook (e.g. 11C forecast for Thursday).
  4. Was nice at lunchtime with a reminder of a bygone age when June was actually the best month of the year. The temperature reached average for the first time in 22 days with a max of 16.9C, blue skies and sunshine. Sadly it wasn't long before the reality of June now being the worst month of the year hit home with the blue sky giving way to heavy downpours of rain. Even heard thunder which I'd almost forgot existed, not having heard any for over 18 months. Still the afternoon saw decent sunny spells after the rain had cleared. Only bang on 5pm did the virtual overcast grey move in to give yet another rotten evening peppered with heavy downpours and cool temps of around 12C. Rain total 4.8mm, sunshine 5.0hours so another poor June day but this month is so bad that it could laughably end up being the best day
  5. Vile again. 9.7C with moderate rain. 4.6mm so far with total cloud cover all day for the 9th day out of 12 Temp did reach 13.7C earlier making it the joint 2nd warmest day of the month. Really can't believe I'm typing this on 17th June
  6. The worst ever Junes here would be 1912, 1916 and 2007. At the moment 2012 looks like joining them as the worst of the lot. Mean max so far just 12.0C which compares to an average of 15.5C for the first 16 days and 12.9C for the first 16 days of October. Only 2 Junes in the past 60 years have recorded a mean max below 14C: 1971 with 13.5C and 1987 with 13.6C. The highest temperature I have recorded so far has been just 14.2C and at Dyce the max as been 13.7C. An absolute joke. The previous lowest max for the first half of June was 15C in 1927 with all post-war Junes managing at least 16C. Yesterday was as bleak as the most miserable of winter days. Several people going about in woolly hats and I recorded a max of just 9.7C for the second day running. Another disgustingly bad week coming up as well with rain, cloud and below average temperatures forecast every day. It's beyond a joke and it's becoming increasingly hard to see how this diabolical month can avoid becoming the coldest on record. Sunshine is the absolute pits. If it hadn't been for 2007 I wouldn't have thought it possible to get so many days of dismal slate grey skies in June. Total of 50.6 hours so far much of which has been early morning and evening. No prolonged sunshine during the day on any day so far hence the worse than dire temperatures. June 2007 had just 34.1 hours sun up to the 16th and ended up on 88.6 hours compared to 102.5 hours for December 2006. Given the dire outlook it could well be this June ends up just as dull and below the 106.2 hours I recorded for January 2012 .
  7. One of the coldest days on record for mid-June with a max of only 9.7C. Despite being dull and unpleasant all day rainfall amounted to very little - total of 2.0mm. Current temp is 8.3C which is little different to the afternoon.
  8. So much for the hope that this years very different April would mean a change in fortunes for the summer. I could try to say something positive about the first half of June 2007 in that we got one nice sunny day on the 1st and then even during the dismal prolonged gloom that followed we still got days where the cloud broke briefly and temperatures hit the average. I cannot think of anything to say about the appalling pile of garbage we've been subjected to this month that isn't negative in the extreme. So cold and miserable it's beyond horrible. Just a complete write-off with not one day you can go out without a thick coat or not have the central heating on. At 3pm today it was just 8.5C here while at Braemar it was 6.5C. Just a complete joke for mid-June. Mean max so far running over 3C below average at just 12.2C which would be 0.8C down on average for the first half of October. Every day has been well below average and it's the first time in at least the past 100 years that 15C hasn't been reached during the first half of June. Most ridiculous of all is that no day has been as warm as Christmas Day last year. Sunshine absolutely dismal even by the rock bottom June standards of the past 15 years. Barely half of the average and a record breaking dull week with just 1.6hours sun. It was the dullest week at any time of the year for almost 2 1/2 years From the afternoon of Tuesday 5th right through to the evening of Monday 11th skies were constantly grey and depressing just like those photos from Ellesmere Port. Even when the sun comes out it's only shining brilliantly at 5am and by 8am it's almost totally overcast. I can't recall seeing less than 4 oktas of cloud cover this month and I doubt there's been one day where the cloud cover average between 9am and 6pm has been less than 6 oktas. If we excluded 5-9am then I'm sure the sunshine totals this month would be as dire as the record breaking dull June of 2007. Not even any heavy summer type rainfalls - just endless November type drizzle and light rain. Months like this and June 2007 are not just the worst summer months I have experienced - they are the worst months of any name
  9. The ridiculously awful weather continues without even the briefest of respites. Yet another day of abhorrent slate grey overcast that we've been enduring constantly since Tuesday afternoon. A total of about 15 minutes sunshine since then all through thinning cloud - not even the merest hint of blue sky. Temperatures dire and well below average for the 13th successive day at only 11.6C currently. No rain so far today. The switch from easterly to northerly wind yesterday should have brought more in the way of brightness but it's just more of the same unrelenting grey only minus the murk and fog. Truly the worst spell of summer weather I have experienced. Not even June 2007 produced a 5-day spell as sunless as this
  10. An awful start to summer here. So bad that the first week of summer has returned a colder mean maximum than the last week of winter 23rd - 29th February 2012: Mean Max: 12.9C Highest Max: 16.5C 1st-7th June 2012: Mean Max: 12.1C Highest Max: 14.2C. While there have always been summer days colder than the mildest days of winter it really is ridculous when we're now seeing on virtually an annual basis summer weeks or even months that are colder/duller than what we had in winter. Like we have no seasonal variety at all any more. The last three days really have been dire. Murky and depressing and reminiscent of June 2007. A grim outlook too. It could be in to the second half of June before I record my first summer day as warm as last Christmas day when it reached 14.6C .
  11. Utterly repugnant. Cold, dull and wet all day with an unpleasant easterly wind. Rain seems to have eased up now only to be replaced by thick fog Max temp: 10.1C, Rainfall 10.0mm, Sunshine:0.0hrs
  12. Horrible day. Cloudy, very cool, windy and drizzly. Max temp only 11.1C with 1.1hrs sun and 0.4mm rain Glad I didn't have today off but got an extra day of annual leave instead. Public Holidays are a waste of time in this country.
  13. Another uninspiring day - mostly cloudy with the bulk of the sunshine before 9am. Sunny spells in the afternoon saw the temperature reach 14.2C - a substantial improvement on the diabolical past 3 days. Now we have yet another depressing cold, cloudy evening that's totally useless for doing anything outdoors in. Current temp an awful 9.6C
  14. Just back from a holiday in Somerset and couldn't have picked a better week to go. Temperatures up to 28C and clear skies except last Sunday and Thursday morning. It was as good as you would get abroad Day after day when I was away I saw no higher than 14 or 15C being forecast for this area by the BBC. When I got back I found 20C had been breached 6 days in a row from the 22nd to 27th with a peak of 23.4C Can't remember that happening in May before. I recorded 4 in a row in 2010 and thought that was fairly unusual. Looks like this month will end up similar to May 2010, with temperatures well below average for the bulk but the overall mean only fractionally below average due to one week of outstandingly warm weather. Today dawned another warm and sunny day but the rot set in at 11am to leave a cloudy afternoon and horrible grey cold evening. Looks like no opportunity to sit out in my garden at all this week, something I haven't been able to do since March, as we just revert back to the ridiculously cold, miserable and unpleasant conditions that have prevailed since the start of April. 10C maxes forecast for the next few days
  15. No frost here this week as we never get any exceptionally low minima nowadays just exceptionally low maxima. 1.8C has been the lowest this week - barely any colder than the 2.2C min on Saturday which was then followed by the warmest day of the past 6 weeks.
  16. Almost 7 weeks of unrelenting cold, miserable, depressing, boring, unvaried rubbish and it just keeps on getting worse. A ridculously cold max of 6.3C today It really doesn't get any colder at this time of year nor any more depressing with a horrible drizzle on and off all day and a rank north easterly wind. Little over 2 weeks from the start of June this is like a sick joke. Of the past 48 days measurable rain has been recorded on 38 of them and above average maxima on only 7 days. 15C has been reached only once and 13C only 3 times. Even Faeroe Islanders would complain if they got a spring this awful
  17. A lovely spring day - the first really good day since 30th March. Min was 2.2C and max 15.8C making it the first day since March to be warmer than Christmas Day . Sunshine total was 12.2 hours. A welcome respite from the awful weather of the past 6 weeks.
  18. Yet another disgustingly cold, dull, wet and horrible day. Drizzly rain on and off the whole day, north easterly winds and a max of 7.8C. Rain total only 3.6mm so far. There has not been one daily rain total worthy of note since this relentless unsettled spell began 6 weeks ago just day after day of leaden skies and light rain/showers. Current outdoor temp just 5.7C while indoor temperature was just 14.9C when I got home
  19. Awful again. Just the same as yesterday with some sunshine in the morning degenerating into a dull, cloudy afternoon. Just had a hail shower and the temperature is a ridiculously cold 6.2C No frost again last night this time due to cloud. Min was 1.7C. Max 9.5C. Had the sunshine lasted into afternoon then we could have seen double figures for only the 2nd time in 19 days.
  20. Yes, I am sick fed up of it. The last 12 months have been absolutely dire for warmth and fine weather. Mean temperature is a poor indication of warmth to me. 2007 and 2011 were poor years for warmth because the positive anomalies were largely due to mild nights and mildness during the cold half of the year with exceptionally bad summers. 2010 saw much more in the way of warm weather, despite the mean temp being 1.3C lower, as the negative anomaly was largely caused by very cold winter months with a much warmer (though still just average) summer than 2007 and 2011. Last May saw the lowest monthly max since 1983 then the summer was dismally cool, dull and wet with day after day of below average temperatures and a record breaking run of sub-70F days. We didn't see any warmth until late September when it conveniently broke down in time to make 1st/2nd October one of the vilest weekends of the whole year. So far this year even worse. Every day since the 12th April has recorded below average maxima and despite it being into May we are still enduring day after day of single figure maxes. Even sunny days are only recording single figure maxes. April was the dullest since 1941 with a record 26 days of rain and May looks like turning out barely any better. Since the 10th April the warmest temperature I've recorded has been just 11.5C. Today it's cloudy and 7.8C at noon and I can't see any sign of above average temperatures in the coming week. It looks as though I'll go a full month without even seeing 12C which would be unprecedented, as far as I'm aware, this late in the spring. It's depressing to think it's only 6 weeks that the nights start getting darker when there has not been one remotely decent evening in the past 5 weeks where you can go outside and benefit from the light evenings.
  21. Now into the 6th week of unrelenting dross. Sunny spells during the morning but still the temp remained in single figures and it's turned into a horrid afternoon with mostly cloudy skies and showers of icy rain/ice pellets. Temp a winter-like 6.3C at the moment following a high earlier of 9.7C. No frost last night due to the wind ruining the chances yet again Min was +0.6C.
  22. The coldest I can remember here for a day of full sunshine was 3rd June 2000 which was clear and sunny with 16 hours of sun but produced a max of only 13C. Also 14th June 2007 had 13.1 hours of sunshine but a max of only 12.1C. For July, the coolest sunny day I can recall recently was probably 23rd July 2010 with 13.6 hours of sunshine and a max of 16.6C. However 16th July 1965 had a max of 15C with 14.4hours of sunshine.
  23. I can't think of single positive thing to say about the unspring-like dross we've been enduring since the March heatwave broke on 31st March. Today was the 20th consecutive day with below average maxima but it did reach 10C for the first time since 17th April. That's 13 consecutive days in single figures. The longest run of sub-10C maxes I can find after mid-April, in the past 50 years at least, was only 10 days (24th April - 3rd May 1978). The highest temperature I recorded during April was just 12.8C which is lower than the mean max for March and lower than the monthly maximum for each of the past 14 months with the sole exception of January 2012. Max of 13.2C at Dyce was the 2nd lowest for April since records began in 1941, only April 2001 with 13.1C recorded a lower monthly maximum. I can recall the 2 days in April 2001 which reached 13C and both were very pleasant and sunny and felt much warmer. By contrast the warmest day of April 2012 was grey, drizzly and horrible and felt considerably chillier. April also set a new record for rain days with 26 compared to the previous record of 24 and sunshine was the lowest since 1941 May started off sunny until grey muck rolled in off the North Sea almost bang-on 5pm resulting in another wasted evening
  24. An unremittingly cold, dull and wet month that was as dismal as the bleakest of winter months. A new record was set for rain days and rain duration while it was the dullest April since 1941. 25 days recorded below average maxima and the mean maximum was 4.4C lower than March. It would be hard to imagine a worse April. Almost certainly the only April where rainfall duration has exceeded sunshine duration. Mean Max: 8.5 (-2.4) Mean Min: 2.9 (-0.6) Mean: 5.7 (-1.5) Highest Max: 12.8 (8th) Lowest Max: 3.8 (2nd) Highest Min: 6.6 (8th) Lowest Min: -1.1 (5th) Air Frosts: 3 Rainfall: 103.8mm (188%) Rain Days: 26 (+10) Wet Days: 20 (+9) Rain Duration: 114.3hrs Wettest Day: 14.4mm (30th) Sunshine: 97.0hrs (63%) Sunniest Day: 10.3hrs (16th) Sunless Days: 6 Snow/sleet days: 6 Snow lying days: 2 Max depth:6cm (3rd)
  25. 103.8mm for April here (188% of average) compared to just 67.6mm for January, February and March combined (41% of average) Total for year so far: 171.4mm (77% of average).
