  1. Still snowing heavily, although flakes are getting bigger, temp now up to 1C. Good cm on the ground but starting to melt.
  2. moderate snow here on a keen westerly wind, temp 0.4C. Its all started a lot earlier than I thought, just hope the temperature doesn't rise too much today, could be a decent accumulation by tomorrow morning!
  3. Strange one today, woke up to heavy rain and 3C, drove over to Hawkshead, near Ambleside for work. Hit snow at 400m on Kirkstone Pass, winter tyres had no problem gripping, highly recommend them. Inch or two of snow right down to the shore of Windermere on the other side. Snow stuck around on the grass all day. Also snow reported in Penrith to the east of here, why no snow in between, even with a lot of altitude?
  4. Has Dewent Water started to ice over yet? One of the best views in the Lakes once that freezes over and is covered in snow, was about 4/5 inches thick by Christmas 2010, hope we get a repeat this year!
  5. Fantastic day for working outdoors, everything dry and ground frozen hard. Max temp today of 0.3C due to cloud cover, everywhere still covered in thick frost, temp now -0.4C and dropping fast. Be nice to see a bit of the white stuff come morning but I'm not getting my hopes up! Fingers crossed.
  6. Max temp of 1.5C today, now down to 1.1C. Still a heavy frost in sheltered spots, going to be a cold one tonight! Earthquake reported in Patterdale last night, only a few miles from here, didn't feel anything though.
  7. Cloudy here, has been most of the day. Temp dropping slowly, now 2.3C
  8. Helvellyn's east face has a good accumulation, snow down to 600m.
  9. Snow down to 600m on the Lake District fells, winters getting closer!
  10. Pretty foul weather here too, rain and wind lashing the windows, proper autumn weather! What time do we expect the cold front to arrive, is there still that nasty squall line showing?
  11. Looks like fly droppings to me, had loads of them round here in 2010, left these black dots everywhere. Had fly papers hanging up in every room dripping with half dead flies, they were a interesting talking point when visitors came round, kind of a modern art installation!
  12. Fingers crossed then. Looking at the picture from Shap, the aurora was quite low on the horizon so I may not have seen much, my view north is a bit restricted without climbing a hill. Also noticed the aurora alerts were going into my spam, need to set it up to text my phone, don't want to miss a good viewing while tucked up in bed!
  13. Indeed! Most settled spell of weather since late May. The house is currently sat just above an inversion, houses further down the hill are still freezing in thick fog while we're basking in brilliant sunshine! With the lack of wind temperatures by early afternoon are quite pleasant, I've been working outside in a T-shirt these past few days. Just a shame the autumn colour Isn't at its peak yet.
  14. Why do I always miss these things! Any chance of aurora tonight? Might be the last chance before the cloudy skies are back.
  15. Here's a question I've been pondering for a while, why is it that the record cold temperatures don't occur during the coldest winters like 47, 62/63 when the perfect conditions were prevalent (prolonged cold and deep snow). Is it just a case of the synoptics that occurred in Dec 95 and Jan 82 didn't during the big winters or did these just beat records set back then?
  16. Does this port freeze over in the winter, if so what time of year should we expect ice to form?
  17. Autumns definitely a couple of weeks early this year, can't remember so many leaves falling in September. It seems we have skipped a month this year and gone from August straight to October. I wonder if Winter will arrive early?!
  18. I'd much prefer stormy weather during November and first half of December, then blocked conditions thereafter. Would love a severe blizzard this year, think it would have to come from a frontal battleground situation, as where I am is too sheltered by the Pennines to the East and Scotland to the North. I would happily take one big snow event that stuck around for a week or two, then the rest of winter mild than the usual light frosts and inch of snow here and there. Currently tucking into some Christmas chocolate log from Morrisons, way too early for Christmas stuff but it does feel like winters getting closer now!
  19. Rain persistent but not heavy. Hills have now reached saturation point, covered in white streaks, becks are full, this is when the lakes start to fill!
  20. Think your right about the sonic boom, there's a video of it over Dumfries and Galloway, NW of here, so probably landed off the west coast of Scotland. Really wanted to find a meteorite, people will pay a lot of money for a lump of space rock!
  21. Has anyone found any reports on the loud explosion, I can only assume it came from the meteor hitting the earth, sounded just like a distant bomb going off, two loud rumbles one after another. I'm tempted, as its such a nice day, to head out and see if I can find it. It'll be like looking for a needle in a haystack and I've no idea if it landed one mile away or 100 miles. It could be close, its very rural around here, I could have been the only person to see and hear it. If it landed 100 miles away then it would have been so loud that someone must have reported it. Think I'll head up the local hill, see if I can see any scarring in the fields, not expecting to find anything, nice day for a walk anyway.
  22. From my perspective came from SE heading NW.
  23. Taken from the back garden. Anyone else hear a loud explosive type rumble?
  24. What are the chances! Just been outside getting some shots of the stars, playing around with settings on the camera. Just pressed the shutter for a 20 second exposure when it suddenly when very bright, looked up thinking it was a firework but it was completely silent. Happened to get it perfectly framed in my shot, cannot believe the timing! About a minute later there was two loud rumbles, like an explosion, was that it crash landing?! Cant remember how to post pics, anyone help?
