  1. Well it looks like the Decembers of the 2010s are once again going the same way as the 1970s and 1980s Decembers.  After a great start with the very cold December 2010 (like 1981) a stinker has followed with a very mild 2011 and 2013 (like 1988).

2011 was quite mild, but its first two thirds were quite wintry on high ground in the Peak District with 12+ days of transient snowfall and temporary accumulations. 2013 on the other hand has been awful.
  2. At last I found where this comes from! 13,000ft up some Antarctic mountain! Sure is a low temp ( the lowest recorded) but not a 'record' in the sense of vostok and other sea level low temps. Edit: Indeed Knocks, I don't know if they find posters like that a valuable addition to their numbers or whether they whince at such postings? At least folk like that don't mind highlighting that particular aspect of this supposed 'debate'?

Vostok isn't at sea level - it's at 3488m. I think the issue was that it was a temperature recorded via satellite and is as such disputable. Satellites have also recorded completely-discounted 70c temperatures in Iran, for example.
  3. Overheated Arctic air causes deep freeze in USA  http://wxmaps.org/pix/temp1.html Global warming caused a very cool summer in the USA and a very cold Start to winter it makes everything more extreme lol. Posted Image

You are posting actual temperature maps. All that the differences between the first and the second maps show are that early-mid December tends to be cooler than the end of November. This has nothing to do with climate change in either direction.

The anomaly map shows that the warm generally outweighs the cold.

  4. Just saw on the front page there. Macrihanish 8c, Glasgow (Airport)  0.1c. What a difference over a short distance.

It's been a pretty poor day and if it continues like that for days on end, as it easily can do, then it's my least favourite type of weather. On the other hand, remove the cloud and you've got cool, crisp sunshine, like on Friday or Saturday, and it's perfect.A damp 0c in Scotland, on dreich days like these, honestly feels colder than -10c in dry weather on the continent.
  5. The ice bridge to Iceland would be fascinating to see. Surely you can see the ice coming from the cost of Iceland now

Nah. Can you see Belgium from the Essex coast? They're similar distances, and ice is on the water's surface rather than being a landmass, so even less visible. And it's not an ice bridge forming there, as in the ice originates from that area, but rather it's rather flowing south from cooler seas and then melting. That's one reason why it won't make any significant progress. Sorry to be a party pooper!

  6. Haven't posted in here for a few days as I've been model watching.  Anyway, on the IMS, it's definitely noticeable that the sea ice on the southern tip of Greenland is reaching towards Iceland.

There is probably still a decent distance between the two, but with the way it is just, now, it's not beyond reasonable that the Ice could reach Iceland this winter...

It comes relatively close every year, but I don't think there's been a bridge for over 40 years.
