  1. Snow not really sticking below about 150m in North Lanarkshire, but there is a thin covering in East Kilbride. Seems a bit curious that it appears to be lying in some extreme south-western coastal parts like the Stranraer-Portpatrick road but not in low lying parts of the central belt - perhaps just down to greater intensity further south-west?

  2. Looking good indeed for the south-west indeed, with the updated MWIS Southern Uplands forecast going for: 'snow falling most or all daylight near and west of the M74 and probably Cheviots. Northwards across Borders, the snow progressively lighter and morecross the region, considerable blowing of previously fallen snow.'

There could well be ski-touring available in the Southern Uplands in late March and possibly over Easter - not bad going!

I'm resigned to being stuck in a murky, raw and windy no-man's land here over the next couple of days between frontal activity in the west and showers to the east, with no more than a few snow flurries, but the thought of getting some snowy hillwalks in over Easter is more encouraging.

  3. this is as far as the 12z NAE brings the front in at the end of the run we will need probably another 3 runs to know more from this so tomorrow afternoon we will know alot more

Looks a bit reminiscent of that frontal event back in February where the front was originally shown as reaching Scotland but eventually ended up dumping the heaviest snow over Wales and Gloucestershire.

  4. Come a wee drive up to shotts. I'm on the verge of being snowed in now. Still snowing moderately and drifts in the garden well over 2 feet deep. I reckon there must be approaching a foot of level snow now. It's insane!

That's a bit annoying, a few miles further east and a bit more elevation, then I'd have been in business. Oh well, there'll be plenty to enjoy on the hills for quite some time.

  5. Too far inland for showers to reach with an E'ly flow. Better with NW'lies.

It isn't always, but this event really hasn't produced the goods further west. Disappointing as the forecasts looked good for Lanarkshire yesterday. Story of this winter!. Och well, at least some folk are getting a good pasting!

Currently moderate snow falling but failing to lie in East Kilbride.

  6. Went for a walk in Leadhills today - 0C and snowing at 390m asl but latterly the new stuff falling was melting as it landed on cars etc. Some proper Christmas card-style scenes though! Probably 10cm. or so on the ground. Could be some very deep cover up there by Tuesday perhaps. Not a great day for photography with murky white skies and poor visibility but will post any decent pics later.

In the morning, there was uniform snow cover south of Larkhall, but rain and sleet below about 250m had done some damage to low ground cover by this afternoon.

  7. I've never really understood why the Met Office don't seem to count high altitude sites in temperature statistics/records. For instance, today on the summit of Cairn Gorm the following figures were recorded: 2013-03-10 18:00 -10.3 °C 2013-03-10 12:00 -8.5 °C 2013-03-10 06:00 -10.2 °C 2013-03-10 00:00 -8.5 °C

  8. A sharp and fairly prolonged cold spell on the cards, according to the latest models, from the weekend onwards.

An interesting outlook on the MWIS forecasts this morning:

"There has been a major change in the forecast over the last 24 hours, with all forecast models, very much more rapidly flooding cold air southwards again across the whole of the UK. Patchy rain, or on higher levels snow will spread north of Wednesday, turning to rain more or less up to highest summits everywhere on Thursday, but freezing levels will then drop quickly again, with intermittent snow falling on eastern mountains. The very cold conditions will last well into next week. Easterly winds will reach gale force on some upland areas, mainly Highland Scotland on Friday and Saturday."

  9. Despite lack of significant snowfall IMBY, I think it's been a reasonable winter overall so far. I've been able to go hillwalking in proper snowy winter conditions most weeks which is more than can be said for Jan/Feb last year. It's a pity for the ski centres that there have been so many windy days though, although there has been a relative lack of the big westerly winter storms which often bring rain/sleet at low levels and copious snow at altitude. It certainly hasn't been constant mild south-westerlies, which is the minimum you can ask for. I notice there's no sign of the gorse flowering yet, whereas in mild winters (like last year) the flowers come out slightly in the winter before fully emerging in spring.
