Many consider the best summer of the "noughties" to have been 2003 (although 2005 and 2006 are strong contenders) and what happened in February-April 2003? It was one of the most anticyclonic February-April periods on record.
I remember how it was nice for weeks in early spring and quite warm too.
Warm weather never felt far away that year and then into August and wow.
I would love a repeat of that August, the temps were incredible and the breakdown was scary.

If i had to compromise on a particular month then its about time we had a warm/hot August.

Here's a summer month, August 1991, which was a pretty good summer month overall but its virtually forgotten.
CET: 17.1 (+1.3)
England and Wales rainfall: 27.8mm (10th driest on record)
Sunshine: 208.9hrs (121%)
Scotland
Temp: 14.0 (warmest since 1984)
Sunshine: 141.3hrs (sunniest since 1984)
Rainfall: 61.6mm (driest since 1984)
Northern Ireland
Temp: 15.0 (1990 was slightly warmer)
Sunshine: 151.8hrs (sunniest since 1977)
Rainfall: 38.4mm (driest since 1983)
For Wick, it was the warmest August since 1947
Leuchars, the sunniest August since 1976.
Hastings recorded only 3mm of rainfall with 147% of the expected sunshine.
Maximum temperatures were nothing special, the highest maximum at Manchester Airport was just 26.6C on the 31st but 20+C was recorded on 21 days.
Heathrow recorded 27.9C on the 21st with only 1 day being sub 20C for the whole month.
The good spell continued into the early part of September with Heathrow recording 29.7C on the 1st of September.
1st August-10th September CET: 17.0
England and Wales rainfall 1st August-13th September: 28.3mm
So it was a very pleasant month.
Oh to have the ability to bank that now

I remember waking up on i think a sunday morning to snow in June imby (saddleworth area), this would be 88-91 i think, not 100% sure of the year but i was a teenager at the time.
My mate had a sleep over and he thought i was on the wind up when i shouted out as it was June.
If anybody can dig out that chart it would be good.

I live in west Manchester and the last occasion of a 15cm+ snowfall before last winter was 1981-82.
There was an article in Weather magazine in the mid 1980s recording Manchester snowfalls of 15cm+ since 1880. 18 occasions and last winter was the 19th. The snowfalls of 1996 and late December 2000 never breeched the 15cm mark.
What was Greater Manchester I live near the Lancs/yorks border at over 600 feet and even when we are forecast good snow it somehow rarely happens and yet 10 miles East over the hill they have tons of the stuff
I call it the Manchester dome which closes when snow approaches and opens for rain.
-
manchester.....anyone know where that ranks on the list of snowiest british cities.........i would imagine somwhere in the middle
I wouldn't have expected it to be very high.
With the exception of last winter Greater Manchester has been pretty poor for years when it comes to getting its fair share of snow. Living on the western side of the pennines there are many occasions when we should have in theory got alot of snow but somehow anything significant has always managed to avoid us.
I hear 80's style winter mentioned alot regarding last winter and its true that back then we used to get deluge after deluge, or so it felt like, last winter was the only time it has come close to that in years.
I am hoping and my gut feeling is we will get close to a repeat this year.

How far south will these winds penetrate?
-
I see that didn't work then?
Any clues as to when the ECM will be able to be viewed again???? SW and SW Wales looks best for month of June, there'll be some very very pleasant weather down there.

I am off to Devon next friday for the rest of June, starting to get quite hopeful for nice weather now.

24 i would find hot
-
So the general concensus is that things will start to improve this weekend and that high pressure may start to build in next week. However how far, long and warm are still up for debate?
-
I live 15 mins away from those pics and can concur it was stunning, the gutters suffered though in the area as they collapsed under the weight of the snow.

I am all in favour of the GFS summer run
How would a low in the continent affect the south west?
-
If it is sunny i find 20 degree's hot

Any predictions for the second half of this month?

When Will the Netweather long term forecast be issued?

It rained here until mid afternoon Saturday and then has been dry and pleasant since until today, hardly a poor bank holiday.
Interesting that the ECM is showing warm air fighting back next week after the breakdown, a June like the one forecast on weather outlook is what i would love to see.
-
Exactly
Summer in the uk for me is a nice few days followed by a breakdown with thunderstorms, then another nice few days.
-
To balance yesterday where i was told i was negative for posting Weather Online's poor forecast.
UK Outlook for Monday 14 Jun 2010 to Monday 28 Jun 2010:
The theme of sunshine and showers is likely to continue at first with perhaps a trend towards higher pressure giving drier and brighter conditions. Many areas should see a good deal of sunshine and warm to very warm temperatures. Southern and western parts may see more in the way of rainfall with the possibility of some thundery weather, whilst northern and eastern regions should remain drier.
Even though i am going to the south-west i would take that forecast now if offered it.

I remember waking up on one June Sunday when i was about 14 (give or take a year) so about 20 years ago and there was snow on the ground, this was in the saddleworth area.
