Of. Course you are right but the weather will do what the weather will do and it is many years since snow lovers got their true wishes.I was a young man inDecember 1962 and shiver at the thought that we could have a winter like that accompanied with a pandemic as well but now at 85 I just say que sera que sera.
-
I read somewhere that a bout of cold weather might quell the spread of Covid.

Having been old enough to remember clearly the incredible winter of 62-63 I have to say the charts are starting to look incredibly similar. My only concern is in a warming world will it affect our snow chances as the majority of our snow falls at marginal temperatures.

The old old saying come to mind again, long told long last ,short told soon past.

This looking up at a dangling carrot surely cannot go on much longer, I have always been an ecm man but today?

I cannot seem to access the sacra site, anyway for anyone interested I am number 16.

You have a chance and goo luck to you , we will have to wait longer but how long I in the laps of a greenie high.
-
Charts much more interesting now but methinks we will have to wait some little time for our snow.

For someone who distinctly recalls the incredible winter of 1962-63, the weather of mid December comes to mind, it was rather cold until a ridge moved slowly east and a high over Germany started pulling in bitterly cold se winds. I have all the details from the DWR of that time should anyone wish the fine detail.

6 weeks in and out of hospital with the latest being pneumonia should be just about ready for the first snow!

We certainly adapted later in the winter of 1962/3, we had to, but bear in mind the lack of central heating in 1963 compared to 1979, hence the 'smog' of early Dec 1962. I recall sledging down a road hill in S London / Surrey for several weeks in Jan 1963, quite unhindered by traffic, and our activities were only stopped after the bin lorry eventually made it around for collections, 3-4 weeks after the last collection, and we were shooed away. Again I couldn't see that being acceptable nowadays. Food shortages, lack of heating fuel and power cuts, we had them all in leafy Surrey in early 1963. However the schools stayed open throughout, something which I don't think would happen in a similar winter now!
We in the North East of England certainly did not get the severity of the snowfalls nor the extreme low temperatures. just a continuous top up of around 12 cams of snow, whereas the winter of 78-79 had large falls causing road chaos and occasional big dips in both miniature and maxima.
Can it happen again I hope so but with the Azores high taking a position much further North that in those far lflung days I reallly doubt it.

What a surprise, A clear blue sky , not forecast but more than welcome.

Friends of ours have gone to Mull , what a weeks weather they are going to get.

The North East has been dry for many days, no wind and fair amounts of sunshine, it seems strange these last few days to be in the middle of slow pressure system and get some continuity for the previous high. We do need some rain and I guess later in the week we will get some, however as we usually miss the storms I cannot see that changing.

Same here in the North East , sunny and very warm with scattered cloud with a very light sea breeze, all change come Wednesday but no complaints regarding this summer thus far.

Kold’s reply re future winters is not encouraging at all, I will not be around to see snowless winters winters becoming the norm ( I have to admit even in the North East some winters are getting close to it) but it makes me realise how fortunate I was to be around and young enough to appreciate the winters of 62-63, 78-79, 80-81 and there were of course others.
I live in hope foe one more big freeze up—- perhaps 21-22! -
Well Dom,you have your wish if you have the same as it is here, still overcast windless but still slightly muggy at 19c.

I just spoke to my sister in North London, it was quite hard to hear her over the torrential rain and thunder, Wih it would come here!

Oh dear cubism should have been Cu Nim.

Travelling South near Alnwick yesterday to the south there was a nasty cubism, I noticed sea fog suddenly rolling in and in no time it obscured the sky and torrential rain ensued, headlights were needed and windscreen wipers on top speed, after about 20 minutes it just stopped as we ran out of it, I believe there was some thunder but the amount of rain hitting the car roof drowned it out. Checking the radar at home the storm appeared to be heading towards us but dissipated prior to getting to PONTELAND.

3-30 here and a beautiful day since then.

Big question. What time will the sun finally break through these low level clouds?

Still frosty here, lowering the ground temperatures ready for the snow perhaps?
