  1. Afternoon people. What a day out there, can't beat a bit of the good old scotch weather. Temp just dropped fairly rapid here, was 5C 15 mins ago, now 2.8C
  2. I'm much the same BM, try to make as much of the more technical stuff as I can. I'm not expecting the winds to be as bad up here as down your way but that is saying something as it will still be damn windy! I have good elevation so the snow could be the problem for me come friday lost some cover today with the snow going down to 16cms, just started snowing again in the last 20 mins so expect another top up by tomorrow morning before a rapid thaw when the front hurtles in
  3. Understandably the focus is on the wind on the way, but is there any indication of the area where the most precipition/snow is going to hit going in to friday? Extends BM a handshake Likewise, my friend knows the family, utter muppet of a man
  4. If you were to go with the BBCs projections the major problem areas should be west of this route, but really, who knows with this Bad Boy? ps. Off topic but i'll try and keep it loosely weather relevant, if anybody has an idea where the cold and wind will be at it's most terrible tomorrow then please post as i'd quite like to tie Matthew Wright to a nearby transmitter and leave him there. Smug little pr#ck that he is. Apologies, rant over
  5. I would normally be tempted to say go for it NR given that the snow clearing is usually good, but with tomorrows winds and snow the drifts could be pretty special on the high routes. If you have to, the sooner in the day the better by the looks of it *edit* if it's just to go out on the raz, then aye, stay in Glasgow!
  6. What is the extent of the warm up when this front comes in tomorrow? With snow forecast until noon in some parts, then rain, then back to snow, is there a chance places with elevation could see snow throughout the day without the rain soaked interval? Cracking pic Moffatross not been down to Glencoe for a couple of years, my favorite resort for the views on the decent though, beautiful setting
  7. Very little further snow ater I went to bed, couple of showers this morning but it has been snowing like hell and very windy for the last 15 mins. Snow depth still at 19cm but expect a good top up from this band
  8. Same story here, dead calm but has been steady snow for last 2hrs which has topped up the snow cover to 19 cm. This weeks weather looks very busy and possibly quite worrying for some too, interesting to see what manifests
  9. Just got back up the road from Edinburgh, A9 was very icey but it was only snowing at the drumochter summit on my journey. A fairly respectable 13cm of snow here so just enough to make the driveway a pain in the ar*e! hopefully an interesting week ahead with more of the white stuff
  10. Had some heavy, blustery snow showers throughout today up here but they have left nothing more than a dusting on the ground which is then only holding in the sheltered areas. Go below around 200m and it'll be a mixed bag of rain/sleet/ occasional wet flakes. Off down to Edinburgh until tuesday, hope we all get some snow action in the coming week. Saw a forecast today that said 'potential for excellent early season conditions in the Scottish ski resorts in the run up to Christmas' here's hoping!
  11. All the snow was gone by the time I woke this morn, much milder today, sitting at 11C at the moment. Very windy with some squally showers. This coming week looking good for a quick return of the snow, hoping Cairngorm can get a dumping soon so I can dust of the board
  12. Few cms of snow here, nice to see everything white again. Heading south out of Inverness the snowline starts at around 150m. Sporadic showers since this morning. Just pepped up again in the last 10 mins with the big flakes back again
  13. Ahoy from Moy! Thought i'd pop in to say hello to the Kilted thread. I've had what could be termed the year from hell so i'm afraid I have been unable to contribute these last few months but I think I have managed to return in time for the proper exciting weather or 'Winter' as it is known. Good to see the return of the snow to everything over around 2,500 ft at times these last few weeks. Fingers crossed for some snow events for us all in the coming months! A tropical 6C at present
  14. Hi people. Apologies, not posted for a wee bit. Been over in the the New York. Managed to coincide my visit with unseasonably cold conditions for the time of year. Endured a windchill that laughed in the face of my numerous layers of clothing and left my face with a permanent wtf?? expression. The locals were saying it was the coldest they had felt since the start of the year. It's not often I step out the airport in Scotland and apprieciate the warm breeze ( Though as HC has eluded to it was actually fairly chilly earlier today so there have been some wintry showers around, just small granules mixed with the rain here but i'd expect that would be snow not too much higher than my bit} Soon be time to await the arrival of those annoying bas**rds who first arrive round here with their nonsense near spring and spoil the ambience , not campaigning conservatives, but swarms of midges of course. A nice april snowfall to reduce their numbers would be dandy, so here's hoping
  15. A wee query. With predictions from some quarters going for a bad winter for southern and central europe and possible milder than usual conditions for 'Ireland, central/northern Britain and Scandi'. I was wondering if anyone could tell me when the last winter like that occurred? Where the south of the UK bore the brunt of the cold and the mid to northern regions were spared? Obviously feel free to add an opinion on how likely you feel this is for this winter given the current predictions and projected set-ups if you like.
  16. Looking at the wonderful winter snow set-ups thread. If we are approaching a possible Omega blocking set-up we can expect the pro-longed cold, the frosts etc. Though with the Met office still going for below average precipitaion for this period, is there really much chance of snowfalls (of note) in the approaching period? and if so where? Would be looking for wandering westerlies like we experienced this week to get the big stuff? I agree Snowyowl, there was a disappointing a lack of synoptic discussion for a wee bit A re-run of Jan 85 would be fabulous. BIG snowfalls up here and indeed widespread accross the uk, great stuff
  17. Looking promising for all the snow lovers towards the end of this month then It has indeed CMD. Aberdeen, Banff and Buchan all low level, had their first snow on Oct 20th. Of course Orkney&Shetland too. It would not have been overly unusual to see it a month earlier in the north and north east though really
  18. Indeed there is not Rollo, but lets hope we all have plenty of those scenario's in the not too distant future!
  19. Thanks Rollo. Sauchen is a good bit east from me. Im only about 12 miles south east of Inverness here
  20. Yeah, it can be interesting when I hear Aviemore (lower at 228m) has woken up white and we may be dealt sleet. Though, not being too far from the firth we can catch snow gains, particularly from North Easterlies, with a loss of intesity by the time they have travelled inland to the areas you mentioned. Out of us all though, Dalwhinnie with it's elevation and proximity stood apart this past 7 days. Experiencing a snowy week from that westerlies
  21. Hi folks. First post, though I have kept up with the forum as much as I can in the past to try get a heads up with the forecasts! Been a couple of snowfalls so far this Autumn but nothing that has really lasted the distance. Anything above 1700ft has had more success and the higher plateaus have had a good cover for the past few weeks now. My (admittedly novice) understanding about what has been said so far about the winter ahead reads that we are not going to experience the sustained, relentless cold and snowy conditions that we saw last time round. Not surprising given the nature of last winter. This time round, anything resembling those conditions will be broken by mild(er) more dry conditions on the whole. This has inevitabley drawn murmurs of disappointment from many given the huge snowfalls last winter (especially up here). Having said that, would it be correct to say that there is potential for 'battleground' snowfalls where the westerlies, full of moisture, meet very cold easterlies resulting in huge, largescale snowfalls this time round? We get alot of snow up here (certainly within the context of the UK) and many of the big snowfalls come from the east. From personal experience though, the westerly/ n westerly events in the past have produced the true, volatile, angry blizzards! I believe it was one of those that was responsable for me being snowbound, without electricity for 3 days back in 1993, all fun and games! Last winter really was a stonker and this means that this winter will always be struggling to register the same effect. Having experienced the relatively pedestrian winters of the late 90s in to the 2000s though im still quite confident this winter can produce something that will stand apart and bring us some decent snow again! Ever tempted to move up here Jethro? If you had that elevation in many parts of the Highlands last year you would have had a snow level of just under 1 Metre by January the 7th
