  1. So thats where 'A bolt from the blue' originates - a new one for me aswell.

A few years ago I witnessed this phenomenon but I just didn't realise it at the time!

August, 2000 and we were on holiday in Orlando.

On the day in question severe thunderstorms were forecast for the area where we were staying.

My wife decided to go shopping, giving me a welcome chance to concentrate on the storms rather than adventure parks etc.

Right on queue a monster storm developed, severe even by Florida standards. Lightning was splitting the sky, forking in all directions, thunder a constant roar and the rain - as if someone had just turned on a tap. Eventually it moved away, much to my relief. I normally love storms but on that occasion it just wasn't any fun.

In the end my wife returned in the hire car, looking very pale. She's always been scared of lightning. She rolled down the window and asked me if it was all over. I can remember looking up at the sky - totally blue apart from one tiny cumulus cloud and telling her that it was safe and that the storm was over.

As she got out of the car there was a huge flash of lightning and immediate thunder - like a bomb going off

Since that day I've often wondered how such a tiny cloud could produce a huge bolt of lightning. Now I know - it came from the main storm which must have been miles away at that stage.

Needless to say that she's never let me forget it!!!

  2. It looks like NI is getting another hammering tonight

Same places again that were hit earlier :D

Well its been raining hard for the past 2 hours but nothing like earlier today.

Northern Ireland Water stated they had received unprecedented reports of flooding, affecting quite a few areas and many hundreds of homes.

Just as the current rain starts to get lighter I notice another fairly intense line of showers in Donegal moving east.....no associated sferics yet but to be honest we don't need any more rain for now :D

  3. We then noticed afternoon heating had allowed some Pulse Thunderstorms to develop, so we headed in their general direction finally staying in Decatur (AGAIN!!)

    Paul Sherman

I just have to ask it...what are Pulse Thunderstorms :)

  4. Great work to the team for some fantastic images.

Thanks NL for the stitching...it shows the huge scale of the wall structure!

I noticed some small streaks of bright light, particulary in the 3rd picture.

Were planes flying in conditions like that or is it just due to water droplet on the lens?

Good luck for the rest of the trip

  5. Evening all

    Just delurking for a quick `twopenneth worth`.

Re the ongoing lack of detail regarding nailing this wintry period of upcoming weather, the METO have updated their weather warning at 23.01 tonight to cover the whole of england for a `period of heavy snow` on Thursday morning Meto. Talk about covering their a***s!

I honestly don`t think the meto boys have a much better handle on how this is all going to pan out, than the experienced posters on here!! Just hope the the cold block is a bit stronger than is being progged tonight.

Some excellent reading and learning to be had on this forum, keep it up!

    WOTS

Not at all, I think Meto were taking a real chance there!

An update has just been posted covering ALL of UK:

"Major risk of snowfall to all areas, falls from 25 to 1000 inches likely.

There is also a major risk of extreme heat/tornadoes/drought/hurricanes throughout the period".

    ;)
