  1. Just my theory, but its been proven that the Moon affects not only Volcanoes but also the release of methane and natural gas into the air. Could it be possible that as a result of this there is a sort of slight cooling/warming effect every few weeks, as more volcanic ash is released during full moon the Earth cools slightly, then when the ash settles by the time New Moon comes around the Earth begins to rewarm again..and so the cycle continues.
  2. Heres a quick map ive made from xcweather showing the convergence line.
  3. I can see pretty big CU almost CB build-ups over towards the Castleton/Sheffield direction, the clouds look like they have some pretty substantial energy within them and theyve been building for the past half an hour. Theres also lots of build-up overhead too but I think a lot of the murk we now have is due to the front coming in, rather than any convection.
  4. A little off topic, but yesterday a 14 yr old Boy in Manchester was hit by Lightning whilst sheltering under a tree in a park, he has burns to 10% of his body and was knocked unconcious by the bolt.
  5. A big shake at 21.53 on the Matese graph, intresting to note about the believed to be extinct Roccamonfina volcano, although according to the link it has a history of mostly seismic activity rather than volcanic.
  6. Would be intresting to see if the full moon has any effect on Stomboli in the coming 2 days, I remember watching a documentary about linking the Lunar phases with volcanic eruptions and on Stromboli they recorded a significant chance in "character" whenever there was a full or close to full Moon.
  7. Personally I think to have Stromboli blow open 2 new craters, Vulcano erupting which it hasnt since 1892, Etna blowing off steam..which isnt unusal i guess however, and apparently some acitivity beneath Vesuvius all at the same time is more than co-incidental, something is definitely happenning.
  8. Looks like Etna is steaming up too today according to the webcams. http://www.vulcanoetna.it/it_etna_cam4.php
  9. Any possibility that the 6.0 quake in the Straits of Gibraltar might have affected the fault-line further down towards Italy, I should imagine that if the seismograph from Vesuvius was correct, then there might be some concerned faces..I'd personally would love to be there right now and taking measurements from the vents that were still active when I visited in 2005. Im also keeping a eye on the World Earthquake maps to see if the quake has been registered there, I guess the key point is to figure out how deep the quake was...from memory I remember reading about a quake that hit the southern side of Naples and caused the land to sink by a meter in places which was just before the 1950s eruption. Its a pretty intresting scenario being played here, did you know theres also a Volcano underneath Rome, but its been inactive for millions of years and believed to be geologically dead. If Vesuvius does erupt soon however, unless something major happens I think its fair to say that we'll see a substantial ash cloud rather than anything pyroclastic, unless she does a St Helens and the plus blocks again mid-eruption phase.
  10. Im back from the magnificent Total Eclipse. Location was at Kizilot near Side, and wow..so many words and feelings on what to say about what I saw happen. It was simply amazing, put it simply im priveledged to now be a 1 in 10,000 person to have seen totality..it was simply amazing, and Im definitely going to the next one..so many things happened in the last 20 mins before 2nd Contact..the light turning ever greyer, the temp dropping, a eerier "silence" as you see the shadow literally fly over your head, and then the next second theres sunset 360' all around you, everythings dark, people are cheering, some even screaming. My mind going crazy, so many things to see and do in those 3 minutes..people say totality doesnt last long enough, and now I know why..3 minutes seemed like 3 seconds. when the final Diamond Ring came I wished for more, even just 5 seconds more..long is never long enough. I was blessed with perfect clear blue skies (and have the sunburn to prove it lol), all I can say is that was the best 350 quid Ive ever spent..roll on the next one. Pics i'll try and upload shortly, just have to sort through all the images and try and find the best ones and a place to put them up on the web. IMO you can see 1000 pics and videos, but to be there and to feel and sense and see it, its something else. Heres a uneditied raw image ive just uploaded from the Digicam showing 10 seconds into Totality. Not the best pic of Totality ever seen, but its MY pic lol and thats something im extremely proud of. Taken some 10 seconds after Totality started and Digi-cam brought out the subtle effects that could also be seen by the human eye (another pic Ive seen looks exactly like this one but is more sharper which imo isnt as realistic as I like to think my pic displays). I only took 2 pics of totality on the Digi-cam (just incase the film pics dont turn out), I have to say Im very glad of this effort so far. A final word for now..Thank God there were no clouds lol.
  11. if you have a telescope, you MUST use a Baader or any other professional solar Filter, if the plastic "attachments" are those screw-in filters that go over the eyepiece then throw them away ASAP as these can and will crack due to the suns heat, and if your unfortunate to be looking in the eyepiece at the time...well...bye bye eyesight, I cant stress how important it is to have solar filter attached over the front of the scope, if unsure..ask.
  12. looks like itll be clouded out here, though im not giving up hope until the maximum of the eclipse passes. on the 22nd however the Moon will be at its lowest elevation for 55 years, barely risig above the horizon in the Shetland Islands, so thatll be something to look forward too, as well as the Total Eclipse on the 29th.
  13. Any Eclipse for me is always intresting, wether its Penumbral lunar, Partial Eclipses, Total or Annual, there all fascinating to watch as its the only time people really appreciate that the Moon and Earth are in orbit (Unless people usually note the position of the Moon and planets in the night sky as I do ever week). Its not everyday we get to see a Penumbral Eclipse, and thinking about it..the next time the Moon takes that "Turn" It'll be blocking the sun from the south Atlantic to Asia. Plus with it being Solar minimum at the moment there'll be few sunspots, but im hoping there'll be some on the edge of the Sun or just behind so we can get and see a good Corona.
  14. Fingers X'd my moneys gone through and I'll also be in Turkey watching the Eclipse either from Side or Manavagat (hoping personally its Manavagat). Only 48 days or so now until it begins, cant believe how fast the event is approaching, still got plenty to buy and prepare for lol.
  15. Heres the latest Loop I was mentioning. http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/TROP/DATA/RT/gmex-vis-loop.html Also I use a site called Hurricanecity.com which has the latest Recon reports, Live streaming media sources and a Hurricane chatroom to keep up-to date on the latest info, hope this helps.
  16. No worries, however it looks like the 2nd eye collapsed before it could develop into anything more significant on Satellite, Hurricane also looks to have jumped NW on the 20.15-21.15 loop, so it could now be turning NW gradually and earlier than expected just after its started to "feed" again.
  17. The eye is basically just a region of warm moist air thats sucked upwards and then cools as it reaches the top of the storm, one eye can form then due to disturbance from convection within the storm a part can "break off" but still be rotating with the storm, so in effect you have 2 eyes but rotating around each other which is also rotating around the centre of the storm if you see what I mean.
  18. Well 2nd Eyes have been seen on Supertyphoons in the Pacific so I see no reason why they couldnt occur briefly on a Hurricane in the Atlantic. They represent storms of severe magnitude or storms with plenty of power in them, so this 2nd eye possibly appearing means that Katrina is likely to be pretty "big" on landfall in terms of windspeed and damage.
  19. Hey guys, looks like a 2nd eye is starting to appear on Katrina, just visible on the latest VIS satellite. http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/TROP/DATA/RT/FLOAT/VIS/20.jpg
  20. Report and pic of the Tornado from Skynews website http://www.sky.com/skynews/article/0,,30000-13360952,00.html
  21. Im just wondering what are the chances of that front "stalling" off the southern coast and central and northern UK having clear-skies in time for the Aurora, should it be visible from the UK at all.
  22. Snowing here too..only moderately, hills obscured by low visibility.
  23. At 23:30 the lights flickered and a distant rumble was heard, turned off comp and lights as fast as I could. Storm was to the East, and approaching slowly, 2 "centres" of activity, one to the Left around 20 miles away, and one to the right at 5 miles away. both centres died before passing over, just leaving drizzle and low cloud. Well over 12 strikes were seen, and the nearest Lightning hit was 2 miles away near Chapel-en-le-Frith.
