Ice pellets here, like tiny hail bouncing up of the floor.

Rain here, temperatures above freezing so a slow thaw.

It is rain because there is a layer above freezing between 975–950 mb (300–600 m). I am sure if there are any heavier showers snow would make it to the surface, it's not a very thick warm layer. Being on high ground would not help you in this scenario except above 500 m when you are above the warm layer anyway. above and below this the atmosphere is conducive.
I noticed that driving into Preston the temperature rose from -4 at home to 0 going over Walton summit, it then fell again to - 4 as I entered the built up area which is not what normally happens I wonder if this could partially explain why? Coming back again it was colder in the centre of Preston then elsewhere.

A balmy -8.5 here, but my outside sensor is sandwiched between our house and next door I suspect it is colder out in the open as we still have a complete snow cover.

High seems to be -1.6 here. Hopefully current 100% snow over should last the week. Although it does mean that the road and pavements remain dodgy.

Most cold spells tend to last about 2 weeks, I think we have done quite well for a pre Christmas cold spell. In the short term could we get a little snow tonight, I don’t think there would be any problems with it not settling.

did you see claypitt lane? also did you cycle to further towards burntwood, if so i take it you saw the rapid increase in snow cover even though it has preety much completely melted in untouched parts here now but there is still some good cover up by the common
No but it was amazing the variation in snow cover even tiny differences in altitude made a difference. We travelled to wales over easter and there were large variations not just due to altitude for example there was no snow around Betws-y-coed but lots nearer the coast. On friday 5th april we drove back through Lllangollen and there was100% snow cover there even the pavements had a couple of foot of snow on them in places.

I cycled up to Wall lane, Pipe Hill it is still completely blocked by snow. There is a car still there that must have been stuck for 2 weeks now!

I would say 10 inches is too high, I would say 5 or 12cms, lichfield is around 90m asl
I measured 8 cm on what appeared to be as representative a patch of snow as possible, so I agree, but gentleshaw is much higher so i would not be surprised at higher totals there.

3 to 4 inches here, hard to be precise because of the wind. Very wet and heavy, it will cause more physical damage than januarys snow.

If you're interested in other regions why not just pop into that thread every now and then? That enables this thread to be specific to west mids only. The combined mids thread was ridiculous as it stretched from Shrewsbury right across to places like Newark!
It is a problem, where I live and work (Burton) is nearer to Derbyshire and Leicestershire than say Worcestershire or Shropshire so I like to be aware of the weather in these areas. In fact it often seems that the weather in the South West of the West Midlands is more dissimilar to here that that in the East so personally I would prefer a Midlands wide region.

I cleared my drive again, it is getting hard to find where to put all the snow, I had cleared it after friday so all new, 4 cm of fresh snow and the drive is already covered again. Still snowing here, wetter feel than friday.

I saw a break in the clouds here, even a glimpse of blue, but someone reported rain in Derby! I remeasured the snow depth, though it has consolidated down a bit I came up with a figure of 12 cm , so I woukd be happy to quote 15 cm after it first fell.
-
Raining in Derby Dewpoint -2 so hopefully will turn to snow soon. raintoday shows lots of ppn pepping up in the east midlands. http://www.raintoday.co.uk
Thats a bit worrying especially if it freezes tonight, 20 odd miles down the road here I saw a break in the clouds, I may even have seen a bit of blue!

They were quite bad last night but they are thawing out now. Either that or the gritters have been out. More snow is forecast tomorrow though.
Thanks for the info, no thawing here apart from the main roads but I haven't far to travel until I am on an A road.

I wouldnt take any notice of it. I find those apps useless at times. Yesterday at 10am it said it was mostly cloudy with sunny spells here... It had been snowing moderately for 30 mins by that point.
What are the roads like in Leicester I am due to drive over there tomorrow? Is the council good at keeping them clear, here the side roads are usually left ungritted.

Yes agree. Most people apear snow blind when measuring or guestimating there snow depth. That on the competative element and the British nature to say 'we/I have it worse than you' bizzare! Good snow event though and it's staying cold for a few days so plenty time time enjoy. As long as I has enough snow to sledge with my little sons I'm happy.
They over estimate how dense fog is as well, however the official measurements are widely scattered and will not include areas with deeper depths. i am certain we had more snow here than in both 2009 and 2010, when we had 11cm, i measured 18cm where i judged the snow to be level and i am fairly confident that were it to be officially measured it would be at least 12cm and more likely 15cm.

Working from home now, measured snow depth it has drifted a bit but I tried to pick as average a spot as possible, level snow equates to somewhere between 5 and 7 inches (12.5 to 18 cm) it is very powdery so it will consolidate down as time goes by but I am still impressed, and it is still snowing a little.

I thought people might like to try and identify the animal tracks, plus a distant view of Bowland and if you look carefully Black Coombe and the Coniston fells
