long way off yet ! but fair play
Yes and I think that though northern areas of the UK still look good for a proper wintery spell next week, southern areas may miss out on any proper cold/snow because there are just too many flies in the ointment - pressure rises to the south and disruptions to the easterly flow in the north. The south could end up with a length cold/rainy spell taking all models into account.

Couple of charts from the 00z ECM run, just a wow run. Massive blocking and cold uppers in place, another teasing cold pool of the real deal Arctic stuff over Scandi at 168. Going to be a few fun days counting this one down.
Yes, a real horror show for warm lovers this morning, you'd think the ECM has snow potential for all, even lower levels, maybe except on the east coast. It's turning into as noteable a March for cold as March 2013 was for warmth.

Snow closing in on Plymouth on the radar - is it?
-
Some amazing pics in there. Well this cold spell proves snow can last more than a day in southern England, didn't have masses yesterday but the shed and lawn still 80% snow cover.
Looking at the models, it seems a very cold pattern is now entrenched, we'd need to get pretty lucky for more snow here next week but models at T168 do have some hope. Otherwise I really hope we get out of this cycle into something much warmer very soon!
-
Snowing lightly but nothing appreciable added to yesterday's accumulations, bit surprised to see the radar had the streamer over us all night, you wouldn't know it!
-
Is that frontal band pushing north again on the radar?
-
It's still snowing and looking at the rader pics jp put up there's much heavier stuff to come, sorry those further north have missed it,but all too often this winter that was me,thank you mother nature
Absolutely do not apologize! How often do we seasiders have to endure "rain on the coasts" events? No, milk this for all it's worth!

This is local extremes!
I'm on the East side of Havant, nearer to Emsworth really, but still classed as Havant...
Got a good covering on all the road and pavements now, probably around 2cm.

Indeed, just a dusting on the roads here. Hope your snow is coming this way!
Wouldn't call it a whiteout in Portsmouth today, but wouldn't say it was just 'light' either - I think we got a bit lucky today to be exactly where those Thames streamers hit the Channel front.
Latest BBC suggests showers will blow over us from the east all night - maybe its not all over just yet
-
Snow is back! And this time the roads are gratefully accepting their gift!
SSC - I moved from Southsea last year, just 5 miles away, and the difference in snow events is quite big. Still have over an inch in my backyard from today. In January, the snow stuck around for 4 days. Still, you get the coast in walking distance for those lovely summer days so it's a fair swap!

bbc solent today forecast just stated 2-5cm snow overnight for iow, hampshire, east dorset
was some west sussex reports too, but thats out of our region really.
Was not expecting much more for us overnight.
Was just thinking that some streamers might pep up the edge of the band - can't see it happening any other way
-
Yeah, fairly happy with the day's events here, nearly got to 2 inches at one point, ironically the light snow is now settling on all surfaces but I can't see there being enough snowfall to make the most of it tonight.
All models were wrong about the snowfall this evening, even at T6; most had the band correct north/south but 50-100 miles too far west, the NAE had it correct east/west but 30 miles too far south as Sussex are now finding out!
-
Does anywhere still have hope tonight for more snow? I hope so :-)
Sadly I think it's going to just miss us to the east - some forecasts had it pushing back in later but that would need quite a turn around now
-
Looking very very dark towards IOW, must be coming down hard
-
Just been out to make the most of this very rare late snowfall...
Portsdown hill has drifts up to your waists in some parts and the main road to Fareham on top of the hill is closed and can see cars buried under the drifts! Amazing sights!
Also (just) managed to get up Butser Hill. Is only accessible to 4x4s as the drifts are stupidly deep up there. Would not recommend going up there just to the shear amount of snow thats pilling up. We were there for around 30 minutes and already we had a 2ft drift on the side of the car!
Amazing sights today! One to remember!
SM
Wow! I live just 300 yards from that hill! It does look pretty white up there! Just a little altitude makes a massive difference, obviously!
-
Snow starting to pick up again in Portsmouth but looking at the radar I'd be surprised if anything really heavy makes it here now. Southern parts of IOW could still get badly hit in the next few hours I feel. Nothing on Jersey though, just how much have you got down there?
-
Most of the snow 'dusting' from earlier has nearly all gone here, all off the roofs & most off the cars on the street too, just as shame that despite a decent amount of snowfall we have very little to show for it. Though it is still snowing lightly with a temperature of 0.5C which is a drop of 0.6C in around an hour! Dew point is -0.5C.
Yes, that was always the problem with a March snowfall, just a little bit too much power in the sun at midday. Let's hope for some more tonight, though I feel the radar might be taking it all into Sussex
-
Massive snowfall here in Guernsey. Inland has got 8-9 inches. Cars stranded everywhere just taken an hour to drive 4 miles. Proper blizzard.
That's great news, but I'm far more surprised that anyone even tried to drive in Guernsey today! Hope you get a load more too!
-
You have around "2 of lying snow?
I have 3cm-4cm lying on my shed roof at the moment, but there has been slight thawing too (and I think it started as rain in the night) so I'd have thought 5mm of precipitation at the very least.
-
After all the hype for the south west, Dorset down to Cornwall really crapped out on this one
Most experts say that precip charts should be taken with a pinch of salt but i raise my glass to the NAE on this one, the NMM was horrifically wrong ..
4 to 5" of lying snow quite widely according to the NMM.
The NAE was completely wrong for here though (until the last minute turn around this morning), yesterday it was going for 2-4mm here up to Tuesday pm - we've exceeded that already
-
omg proper whiteout conditions now. noticed on the met office rainfsll radar a blob of white which indicated downpoor i thought it was a break in the rainband but it clearly was not oh goody bet my lil girl is going nuts at school lol.
Congratulations on 3000 posts!
Real up and down day here isn't it, one minute the sun's trying to break through and a slight thaw begins, the next minute we've moved to Antartica.
Keeping a close eye on the stuff coming out of Jersey - if some of the forecast models are right then this morning was just the starters for us. But very hard to tell if it will make it looking at the radar.
-
Well if it doesn't settle on the roads now it never will. Fairly heavy snow.
-
3cms generally on grassy areas here, drifting a little too. Snow continues to alternate between light and moderate
-
Not really unfortunately.
Is it really not snowing where you are? It's been bit on and off in the last 30 minutes but back to moderate again now. I suppose if you were hoping for it to settle on the road then you would be disappointed so far, true.

One model continuing to go for substantial heavy snow in the east of the region is the NMM. These are their snow accumulation charts. Compare now:

I believe some areas of the South West had 3 inches of snow at the beginning of November. So, so many epic charts this winter, enough to last a decade. Thank goodness a few actually came off!
And there's no let up this afternoon with the UKMO looking like it's set in for another prolonged cold spell at T144. If you compare it with the GFS at that time and then T168/T192, you can imagine the UKMO after T144 sucking the super-cold pool moving west from Siberia
