Shower on now is a mix of large snowflakes, some wetter stuff and small icy bits. Lying though on the frozen surfaces. Temp -0.6C All the local weather stations are showing sub zero so I wonder is there a milder layer above?

Norrance not sure about milder layer but having driven across Dundee and up through Angus about an hour ago, I noticed several temperature changes over short distances. At western edge of Dundee it was at -0.5 degrees then over central and eastern Dundee it rose up to +1.5 degrees and then north into Angus dropped to -2 degrees. Seems more like cold pools of air quickly ‘stirred’ out as breeze picks up as showers come through.

interesting that the wind has eased off so the showers may become slower moving too

I would agree, the ‘blob’ up around Dundee/Angus has been very slow moving over the last hour and other showers coming on shore seem to catch up and ‘extend’ the original blob. Certainly has made for a bit of a snaw fest this afternoon, although it’s getting a bit difficult for anyone who needs to travel (essential workers) around the Dundee/Angus area. Be safe folks.

How much of this (over land) is sticking? And how much is snow as well. Its a good sign that this activity is picking up as we head into nighttime. Stupid sunshine is screwing up boundary layer temps!

Certainly inland over Angus it’s sticking and boy is it impressive in its intensity when you get a shower albeit brief. As already mentioned convergence line of showers now jogging south and will clear Angus next hour or so I recon. I’m still intrigued however by that cluster of showers off the north east coast of Aberdeen. It doesn’t look like a new convergence line but quite a specific form of showers or something which is creating a radar return. Will it intensify and where is it heading?

  4. We have had quite few brief but intense showers today (the kind that all  goes dark and blizzard like moment )  but I’m intrigued as to why has every one of them been mostly graupel apart from the very end of the shower when it changes to dry fluffy snow flakes. Temps are below freezing as are wb so not like that’s a problem. What are the conditions that cause precipitation to fall as graupel most every time today?

A potential streamer to hit Aberdeen just before midday perhaps...

Not sure as it’s already about level with Aberdeen now and there is still quite a southwards drift which can be seen when you run animation. May end up with most of that line of showers coming in just south between Aberdeen and Stonehaven.

Snowing lightly here now but not sticking, it’s 2.0c on the nose. Going to need heavier precipitation or for the temperature to drop a bit to get anything on the ground!

You might be in luck soon, looks like a few heavier showers coming in just about in line with your part of Fife in the next half hour. Be interesting to hear if that helps pull the temp down for you.

Light Snow falling here in dundee, light dusting on all surfaces already. Dundee and surrounding areas , fife and Angus look to be absolutely buried within next few days.

Yes, up here in Angus, early light showers now becoming more organised and heavier. You can see on the radar the separation now of individual cells coming on shore. Didn’t take long for those lower dew points to suck the moisture of sodden ground surfaces, ‘dry’ snow now blowing about in the wind in the heaviest showers.

  8. Blizzard like conditions over the last 40 minutes around Dundee and South Angus areas. As it was peak time for folks heading to work, it's all got a bit chaotic on the roads as cars get stuck on hills around Dundee streets and some accidents on main roads from Perth and Angus. Be interesting to see if showers keep reaching this far east throughout the day or shift back west again.

  9. It's a tad wild just to the North of Dundee and up into Angus, some light graupel showers rolling in but the real problem is the strong winds are causing problems due to drifting. Inside lane of south bound A90 Forfar to Dundee road now has several drifts encroaching on to carriageway. Several B roads around the county now having problems caused by drifting and cars and buses getting stuck and blocking roads. So more problems this morning and that's without much snow falling from the sky, just coming sideways off the fields.

  10. Can't believe the amount of snow today around Dundee area and up into Angus. It's still going strong with heavy falls and sticking to main roads as well as side roads. It's been a pleasant surprise as I expected it to turn more sleety second half of today, instead been heaviest sustained falls which sticks so far this winter. Not looking forward to fast thaw and stormy wet weather next week.

  11. Snow just not stopped for hours in and around Dundee and its been lying so accumulations building. To the North end of city the roads are now a real mess and traffic is struggling even worse as you head further out of the city towards Perth or up into Angus. Going to be horrible when it turns to rain and all goes to mush. For now its gotta be best snow fall (for sticking) so far this winter around Dundee.

  12. Steady moderate snow for last hour here in Dundee and Angus area. Main roads staying wet and clear but fresh covering settling on side roads and pavements. Front seems to have moved in and across the country faster than forecast unless of course this isn't the main show. That said, if we get a break between this front and second band then are temps more likely to rise faster and we get rain mid day onwards?

  13. By midnight NAE mirrors the Amber areas predicted by the Meto

Loop through the build up here.

    More to come folks !

Lorenzo, after LS and your responded to the my query re Forfar to Carnoustie north edge blocking pattern all day, I now have a picture in my head of it bursting through around tea time and having a snow fest in the Angus glens all evening :-) can but hope. Cheers

  14. Seems to be just a slackening of the flow up there:

    13012115_2112.gif

Heavy stuff will start to move north soon anyway though so you should get your fill.

Anyway, proper big baws snaw here still after a brief lull, cover filling in quite nicely.

I must admit though the NAE hasn't had its finest hour, giving an all snow event for all and showing almost no precipitation getting into Edinburgh!

Thanks LS for response, here's hoping as you say heavier stuff creeps a bit further North as Darkness falls. Glad to hear its sticking down your way now.

  15. Right, come on, own up, who's built a precipitation barrier on the East coast around Forfar & Arbroath? That band of precipitation just doesn't want to move North of there, been stuck for at least 2hrs now! We've got an Amber warning for areas West of Aberdeen that I'm sure just about covers my house, yet so far what has probably fallen wouldn't make a single snowball.

Yeh I've noticed that line from around Carnoustie to Forfar has held all morning. It appears the main frontal band creeps north inch by inch yet never gets past this Angus brick wall, very odd. Maybe LS could through some light on it for us (the weather science behind the "Angus Brick wall yee shall not pass") will it break through this evening? If not Amber warning zone will look a tad silly?

  16. Wee update folks on Dundee and Angus area current weather. Dundee City continues to just catch the edge of fast moving snow showers at this stage mostly melting in sun on ground. However slightly to the north east of city heavier showers coming on land heading straight in to Angus and up through Forfar and Kirriemuir. Both Forfar and Kirriemuir getting hefty dumping of snow last couple of hours lying on all main roads also now including main dual carriageway. Will be interesting to see effect of any any wind change as LS is predicting for this afternoon. Amber warning now out for the Forfarshire and Angus Glens area now from Met Office.

  17. Few more cm's of snow this morning up around Forfar, hefty showers coming through just north of Dundee and up past Forfar area. Wind strong in showers blizzard like in open countryside. Dual Carriageway a bit tricky this morning in parts coming through Angus visibility way down in heaviest showers. As already mentioned nothing lying once down into Dundee but that said Dundee only catching edge of showers so far so you never know if it gets some heavier ones later picture may be different.

  18. Having watched BBC Scotland forecast tonight feel a bit disappointed, shows tonight's showers mostly only affecting east coast south of Edinburgh, dying out around Aberdeen soon and not much if anything down through Angus and Dundee area. Then it's dry but cold all the way through to Thursday across Scotland. It was only yesterday we had forecasts for snow bands Tuesday and Wednesday all now downgraded. Anyway chin up as we now look towards the weekend, and the possibilities showing up from what I read in the kilted thread (although LS already making me nervous again as he mentions marginality of uppers etc)

A wee trip into model thread called for I think to read up on the detail of the model outputs today.
