So who is correct? Edinburgh Evening News: Blizzard conditions are set to blast the Capital tomorrow, with forecasts of potential gale force winds and up to 10cm of snow as the city freezes through this winter’s coldest spell so far. http://www.scotsman....gales-1-2742179 or Channel 4: For those asking why Scotland wasn't mentioned in my chat, it's because heavy snow not expected there during daytime. More in my forecast. https://twitter.com/...992340049055744 The slight difference from yesterday is that the weather front bringing the snow on Friday pivots and now has a different orientation. Rather than stretching north to south, it will stretch north west to south east. Met Office warnings issued on Thursday – click on image for more detail As a result, Scotland and northern England are likely to see less snow on Friday than was thought yesterday, with generally no more than 2-5cm. http://blogs.channel4.com/liam-dutton-on-weather/fridays-disruptive-snow-update/2856 Or the Met Office website: (Nothing until evening and then only light snow forecast) http://www.metoffice...st_weather.html http://www.metoffice...rgh?tab=fiveDay No wonder the general public gets confused!- 789 replies

Batty Boy made a map: "Made a graphic that will give you an idea of whether you’ll see snow Sun & Mon." Not looking too promising for Edinburgh and Glasgow. This is from the MWIS : Planning Outlook: All mountain areas of Britain from Monday, 14th January, 2013 Very likely persistently cold and substantially dry over the coming week to ten days. Nevertheless, there will be patches of snow or snow showers occasionally. However, there remains uncertainty as to whether persistent snowfall will occasionally edge in from the west (possibly followed by a temporary thaw of the frozen terrain, at least at low levels on some western hills). Winds often light. http://www.mwis.org.uk/areas.php -

But the big snow blizzards happened yesterday if you believe today's Daily Express: Not seen the apology yet from the daily express for printing a dishonest picture of snow in Cumbria pic.twitter.com/msc3Dd1N — dailyexpresslol (@dailyexpresslol) January 12, 2013 Some tabloid newspaper headlines about snow are amusing. 'Worst freeze for 20 years'. They've forgotten Dec 2010 - coldest Dec in 100yrs. — Liam Dutton (@liamdutton) January 12, 2013 http://expressweather.tumblr.com/ I guess alarming headlines means they sell more copies to their elderly readers. -

That is almost a word for word quote from the Scotsman, Express and Daily Mirror headlines, so it sounds to me like he/she is just repeating what woz in the paper so it must be true innit. http://www.scotsman.com/edinburgh-evening-news/latest-news/temperature-to-fall-to-20-in-big-freeze-1-2724286 -

Bah, where did the sun go? It's blazing down from a blue sky in the Cairngorms: http://www.winterhighland.info/cams/aviemore/ But cloudy in the West: http://www.webcam-ski.com/webcams/interfaces/nevis-range/interface.php?pk_interface=276&m=images&r=panoramique and ditto here in Edinburgh. -

Was going to head up Calton Hill in Edinburgh tonight (Friday) to take some sunset pictures but looked at the sky at around 4pm and there seemed to be some clouds coming in so I just went home. Looked outside at 4:30pm and the sunset was stunning! Grrrrrrrr! The sunset pictures of my neighbours roof don't quite compare to what I would have got from Calton Hill though. Anyone know other good sunset photo spots in and around Edinburgh (I always tend to head for Calton Hill/Arthurs Seat so a change would be good - Pentlands maybe?) So my question is does anyone know what makes somes sunsets so much more spectacular than others? Temperature? Haze? Pollution? Other? Is it possible in advance to forecast/ predict how good a sunset will be? I went up Calton hill the day before (Thursday) which was also sunny but as I got there some thin high cloud came in and the light went very flat. Some cloud cleared so there was a sunset of sorts but nothing like the one tonight (Friday). Also by the way - MWIS is forecasting inversion above I think 600 metres or so on Monday so might be worth a walk up a hill if you live near one high enough. -

"Parts of Scotland are expected to bask in the highest temperatures on Christmas Day, with eastern Scotland predicted to witness 14C (57.2F) – just shy of the 1896 warmest on record of 15.6C (60F)." http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2011/dec/23/christmas-weather-unseasonably-warm Maybe that Xmas turkey BBQ is not such a bad idea after all! Saw that mentioned here: https://www.facebook.com/windywilson/posts/10150392988217237 Although I think his comment that it will be "a storm that makes Bawbag look like a breeze" is ott scaremongering, especially as it is almost a week away.
