Saw a few runs like this for the 19th and 20th last weekend on the GFS and now they seem to have resurfaced.

It is encouraging but as we have seen with the upcoming 2 day wonder (which downgraded) reality will usually fall short of expectation this summer.

Would be nice to go out on a high after such a prolonged spell of cool and wet weather.

Here we go then after an exciting start to Winter on here, for coldies,we have to see through this period of mobile westerlies, probably for at least the next couple of weeks.

Looking forward beyond this period for signals we can see both  the ecm and gfs suites are forecasting a weaker vortex from the bottom up as we go towards mid-January.Charts and graphs posted by myself and others both in the Strat.thread and here show this trend.

Forecasted mjo movement into favourable phases is on the cards but there is some uncertainty on it's amplitude as can be seen by the spread of members,so something to monitor.

Anyway promising signs of a pattern change are showing as can be seen by the later ens gefs showing the Atlantic pattern weakening and heights building over nw Europe.

A thought has just occurred to me-it's 60 years ago that we were on the verge of that historic 62/3 Winter-something i remember so well as a schoolboy. To any younger members i would say have a look through the archive charts it was quite something unlikely to be repeated for longevity.

Anyway to coin a phrase- whatever the weather- I must say i appreciate the excellent posts by so many members both the older and newer ones. The amount of knowledge increasingly shown by so many recently  is quite impressive and enriches the thread.

I will finish my ramblings now by wishing you all a safe and very happy Christmas.

Have you a link for the archive charts please

Nobody on here wants anyone to die or suffer as a result of the weather, but being interested in severe weather, we are always going to have that "itch" to see/experience unusual weather should it occur.

You can guarantee if it were Winter and charts were showing either -5c  and snow or -15c and blizzards, those interested in the cold would be ramping and hoping the more extreme solution would come off (despite the danger to life and infrastructure those conditions would cause) and that's okay.

Even I would be interested to see the more extreme scenario come to fruition and I HATE the cold.

It's the same with thunderstorms, windstorms - any form of weather. I doubt we would be here if we had an interest in completely benign/safe weather.

It's been a while since we've done one of these.

The competition is simple, guess the top temperature later next week between Wednesday 13th and Monday 18th (inclusive). For bonus prizes, also guess the county (or in the case of London, the city), and the day your top temperature will take place on.

Your forecast needs to be made to 1 decimal point (eg 25.1c).

The person who gets nearest to the max temperature (as per the daily met office extremes data) will win a three month Netweather Extra subscription. If that person also gets the county or day right, we'll double it and make it a 6 month subscription, and if they get both county and day right, we'll make it a twelve month subscription.

Remember though, the temperature is the key, the day and place are just bonuses.
In the case of more than one winner, we'll randomly draw the prize winner.

Entries need to be in, on this thread by Monday at 23:59 (BST). One entry only per person will be included, but if you want to update your forecast/guess you can - the last one you post into the thread will be the one entered. Any entries after the deadline won't be included though.

    Good luck!
