  1. Absolutely insane this. There will be a lot of questions about why the models just didn't get it right!
  2. While the eruption has contributed to the record temperatures this year, the main driving force is the ongoing anthropogenic induced warming. There was an article published in nature that calculated the contribution from the eruption to this years warming to be about 0.063C. The eruption increased the chance of the 1.5C threshold being breached by ~ 7%. Tonga eruption increases chance of temporary surface temperature anomaly above 1.5 °C WWW.NATURE.COM Nature Climate Change - The Hunga Tonga–Hunga Ha’apai eruption in January 2022 injected large amounts of water vapour into the atmosphere. Here, the authors show...
  3. Manchester wall to wall sunshine and 25c through middle of next week on met office computer output. Glad some other Manchester people spotted it. Looking forward to being able to sort my very very overgrown garden out.
  4. This is about as poor a pattern as you can get in high summer - yet the CET is running above average! It's never been particularly cold, it's muggy and warm out today even in the hills east of Manchester.
  5. Impressive event here in Diggle. When it got going yesterday evening it was brilliant, proper driving wind and blowing snow.
  6. Thanks for spreading some sense! Even here at 200 m it's been marginal. temp +1c Dew point just above freezing but we have about 5cm of wet snow on the usual surfaces. These marginal events tend to bring the biggest falls though when things align, and with the sun going down and falling temperatures as the colder air comes back south it's going to be pretty fascinating.
  7. Wind continuing to increase here. moderate blowing snow again.
  8. Above 300 m around here I suspect there's already 10cm. The main concern was always after the pivot from late this afternoon - there may be a solid 12 hours plus of moderate to heavy snow, particularly in upslope regions through to Friday morning. Could be a non event but not sure we're even getting started yet.
  9. wind is definitely getting up a bit now coming off the ridge into Diggle Valley, light snow blowing around. +0.8C DP 0.2C
  10. The amber warning doesn't begin until 1500 in these parts. So far here it's been as expected - about 2 inches on cold surfaces with the initial push, now we wait for the pivot and resumption of precipitation focussed upslope Peak District/pennines and those close to the ridge. Further west there will be a shadow as always.
  11. No increase on the 5cm here despite pretty heavy snow at times. Just a little too warm at the moment even at 200m! 0.8c now, snow stopping. All eyes on later afternoon and overnight now for the main event here (hopefully!)
  12. About 5cm on cold surfaces here in Diggle so far. Roads clear. 0.5c at ~ 200m DP 0.1c
  13. moderate snow here in Saddleworth. Settling on some surfaces - temp 1c.
  14. Wet snow here at 200m. Freezing level > 300m so the cold spell is close to an end here!
  15. -4.4c here in Diggle...I suspect the showers might just miss us to the North.
  16. I only had a quick look at the ECMWF soundings, there is a warmer layer but it doesn't seem to get above 0c (close though). It's more evident further west of the region. Lets see if anything changes as the showers track east!
  17. Depends how temperature responds after nightfall I guess. 200m here and 0.2c holding steady.
  18. It's been disappointing here in Saddleworth but we have had some nice heavy dustings. Another one just 30 mins ago putting down a cm or 2. Perfectly timed as it's now frozen solid outside! I'm planning to get up on the tops for sunrise tomorrow so hoping to get some nice photos.
  19. Yeh, it's worth moving to get a bit more of the weather you want! I always want more though - I'm 197m now...and I drive up to 450 m down the road and it's a different world...I want to move higher haha! Pic below of the car park at brunclough reservoir in diggle.
  20. They looks better aligned, beefier and slower moving today. I'm hoping that's gonna do it for this area! Although Im already happy with the couple of fluffy cm I have.
