  1. I live in the south east in Essex, just a few miles from what is officially the driest place in the UK with only 19 inches of rain per year.

We dont have a hosepipe ban in force and there are no plans for one. Our rainfall has been normal right up until this spring. Our rainfall is now running way above average. All our reservoirs are at very healthy levels and the rivers are overflowing.

I think that the region where there has been lower rainfall is not representative of the whole of the rest of the country. There was talk of this year being as bad as 1976. I did predict that we would be looking at floods by May. I think that the water companies are mis-managing the water supplies and not investing enough to keep up with increasing demand.

IMO this country is not in a drought situation. Its nothing like one.

    What drought?

Can we finally put this to bed now?

  2. And then there's the most laughable of them all - The Day After Tomorrow...One ridiculous 'special' effect after another!

Yeah, since when does freezing cold air from aloft drop from the tropopause and freeze everything in a nanosecond! LOL.....The physics wouldnt allow it because subsiding air warms up as it becomes compressed from HPA 500 to 1 atmosphere or one bar.

It was a hidiously dumb movie. but I bet Al Gore enjoyed it.

  3. dear me so we finally get rid of the cold nights, but now that is going to be replaced by the usual may easterlies and yet more slate grey skies

so although my crops won't die from the cold they will get battered by the wind, when will this horrid weather end ?

February reached 16c here a few times, we have only had 16c here about 3 times this month, i will actually get excited if the charts were showing temps of 18c that is how bad it is right now.

You should move your farm right up to Ferryhill near Durham because apparently the weather and climate up there just keeps getting warmer and warmer! clapping.gif

  4. I think I have clearly been vindicated......there is no UK wide drought, there never was. It is a problem for the water companies to invest in the infastructure to cope with increased demand at times of dry weather.

All the nonsense about the majority of the UK in a drought situation while it chucked it down everywhere for weeks and weeks amounted to pure hysteria about nothing. As I said a month ago....its only one small region in England who need to be carefiul because they take ground water and the water companies have failed to invest in alternative supplies.

Almost the whole of the rest of the country is absolutely not in a drought. Rain is never far away in this island of ours.

  5. With respect, it's you who postulates that the UHI effect is underestimated, therefore up to you to prove it. It's not up to me to disprove it.

Without your input its pointless continuing to talk about you finding that its warm in your region. In the meantime, most of central parts and west midlands will be getting frost this week. Elsewhere, the cold, gloom and rain continues.

  6. The temperatures over the last 10,000 years have been rising.

What you need to determine is: how much your temperatures have changed, over what period that change has taken place and whether that change is outside of the environmental change to make it significant.

But if you know what temperature change has taken place as you say you do but wont say then we can move on none the wiser.

  7. I think there is a slight issue with the drought map. It now covers a huge area but conceals within it areas that don't actually have much of a problem and areas that are in quite serious trouble. That's a problem with having a generalised map which just says 'drought' and 'non-drought', there is detail missing..

Some of the EA docs are better in this respect although their test sites are not very evenly placed in some areas of the country.

Yes, I agree with you. This is the point that I have been trying to make. Most of the country has been tarred with a drought brush when its simply not true. The majority of the UK is not in a drought and does not have restrictions.

  8. Of course there is not a conspiracy. Its just that one has to be able to read between the lines to find the reallity of the situation. This will go down in history as the wettest drought in history.

Even as you argue that all the hype of extreme drought must be correct because a map says so; some of the very water companies that created the hysteria in the first place have now announced that they will lift restrictions.

I guess that speaks volumes for the truth.

  9. If one is in a serious drought situation then water companies will apply water restrictions. The fact that many of the regions which are marked as in a drought situation dont have any water restrictions or plans to introduce them demonstrates that something is not right with your data. Namely, its too general. The regions that have a problem are the minority here in the UK.

I maintain my view that something is not right about the level of attention this is being given in the media at a time when we have all been experiencing flooding for weeks.

If its been such a big problem for so many years then why have the water companies not altered their infrastructure to cope?

Could it be that they dont expect the situation to be a problem in the future? or is it being overplayed?

  10. Its a combination of a drier than normal couple of years ,under investment and an increase in the population in the areas most affected. With the forecasted populus increase in the South East continuing, things will only worsen there in the next few years. Maybe its time Property developments contributed more towards utility investment.

One thing for sure -- "Water is the next Oil"

Yes, I think you are right. The emphasis should be on the demand for water and looking at the infrastructure to cope with the millions of extra immigrants we have and will have. They all need a home, a shower, bath, washing, cleaning, cooking etc, etc.

London has introduced a dissalination plant to cope. But I really dont think we have seen the water companies do nearly enough.

Our climate hasnt changed, its the demand that has changed.

  11. Here is the map showing that the water restrictions only relate to some areas. The majority of the whole of the United Kingdom are NOT in a serious drought situation and have no water restrictions whatsoever.

This map shows England and Wales, but Scotland and Ireland also dont have hosepipe bans.

    http://www.karcher.co.uk/uk/about_karcher/Karcher_UK_news/Hosepipe_Ban.htm

Further, these maps are from two months ago, since then we have seen record levels of rain in all areas.

  12. That was not my point.

The media are making a bigger deal out of this situation. The fact is that it is not the whole country and despite what you say its not just my region in the south which is not in drought....its the whole of the rest of the country which is not in droght. Its only a small region in some central, southern and eastern areas who rely on ground water supplies.

    Thats the point.

  13. Perhaps you could correct me here, but is the case the some (or more) of Essex and Suffolk Water's supply is actually piped in from other locations outside the area?? http://www.itv.com/n...-drought-order/ http://www.dailymail...l#ixzz1uTx5jotp

    No, its not true.

The desalination plant was not built in London to supply Essex and Suffolk with water. It was built for the forecasted increase in population by another 750k to 1 million Londoners this decade. It only runs in emergencies, ie terrorist attack or absolute drought conditions for Londoners.

In my region of Essex and Suffolk there is no drought and no drought restrictions and there is no water being pumped in.
