  1. Funny how in one part of the country it can be so different to everywhere else and if we didn't have the internet of this forum we would be unaware of what is going on in other areas, We has some rain this morning ast 6am and the wind rose a little however since then we have had blue skys with sunshine and althought he wind is blowing it's nothing to write home about at the moment.

Unless things have changed this morning in the models I have a feeling that we may have to wait a very long time to have the first match in the Snow Depth Cup, hopefully this is not going to be the first winter in a good few years where we don't see any snow only rain and windPosted Image

  2. AS, I certainly hope you are correct in that something colder is on the way as reading the model thread it's very difficult to understand what is going on.

You have had a busy day today, up at three in the morning for a couple of rounds and now falling down a hill, suppose you must have had  an ASBO placed on you and hence falling down the hill was being bound over to keep the peace.

I must start writing cracker jokes and the rain keeps coming down the wind is blowing at 7.7c

  3. Yes it appears we have a completely different weather pattern to  what we have been used to and I notice the lack of posts in the model thread from certain members and last night there was heated words about using Stat or Trop in the thread and a few got in a right old StropPosted Image .

Just had a heavy shower go through and awaiting the next frontal band which looks pretty heavy if it holds together as it crosses the county, mild this morning at 8.4c.

Keeping the faith in respect of snow, we never had anything here until around the middle of January this year (2013).

  4. What a strange place this world, after the excitement of this morning and us becoming grand parents at the same time our lovely old next door neighbour passed away, brought us back down to earth with a bump, such a shame as she was healthy and fit, saw her going down the shops just before Christmas, been our neighbour for over 36 years going to be strange, will have a drink tonight in commiserations and celebrations, must admit to sitting here with some tears in my eyes, wife's upset as well.

Lovely clear sky's, plenty of of stars out. Sad but happy night, think I'm confussed of Dartford.

CK congratulations on the new addition to the family and so sorry to hear the news about your next door neighbour and hopefully one of those stars is for her. I always tell my children when walk talk about my nans and uncles who are no longer here that they are waving from the sky.  Look I have to get the tissues nowPosted Image

  5. Some of these gusts since the front moved through are really powerful. I have just watched my rainfall reading move up whilst the sun is out and now realise that the strength of the wind is causing the pole to vibrate where the rain gauge is attached and this is causing the counter balance to move inside the unit.  Maybe if I move it to the roof of the garage that will make the storms go away and bring the winds from the east:)

Hi Tom, yes making sure the Snow Depth spreadsheets are still working an available for the start of winterPosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

  6. Morning!

I have a theory. All this Winters wet and windy weather seems to arrive on bin day and I think it's all the local councils doing. We pay enough in council tax to have a proper Winter with some snow so I'm going to write in and let them know my displeasure. I've also noticed the bin men are getting slower and they used to be lightning-quick, could they be why we don't get a decent thunderstorm too?

Here comes the next pesky parade:

  7. and yet another post with accronyms scattered about, PLEASE explain them now and then or give links so folk learning can enjoy the fun?

A few weeks ago when you put your mouse over certain ones it explained what they were, just wondered if this has been switched off or have I done something

Edit: Sorry just noticed its there for the ECM so presume that the others above are not in the look up file.

  8. Nope. Never fell below zero. Like BStE, Newmarket is a town...

So basically there is no accurate UK weather record available (apart from your own weather station) unless you live in a town. Great.

The met office can't have recording stations in every place so they go with many major towns although here in Bedford the site is based to the north of the town so the reading is more of the countryside than middle of the town and these are air temperatures not ground so although it say 1c it's probably below on the grass.

Another reasonable site is the Highways Agency where all the road temperatures and weather conditions are reported, you need to check the box 'Adverse Weather Conditions' for them to appear. the link below probably goes to near Cambridge but the map can be moved around.

  9. I

Where is it possible to get an accurate local temperature record? I can't afford my own weather station and thermometers seem to be made in China and break after a week.

Accuweather had my location at 6ºC with a low of 5ºC overnight on Friday/Saturday and it was supposed to have rained — BUT we had sunshine all day and the frost was still on the ground when I went for the dog walk yesterday just before sunset! Posted Image

Same again this morning — there's clearly been an overnight frost, but according to the website's it never went below 1ºC.

I would use the Met Office web site, hopefully this works for your location
