  1. The Beast from the East finally roared here in South Staffs with huge drifts in places... Out track was cleared twice by the kind farmer at 11 last night and again at 7 this morning otherwise I would have been snowed in

The first one is a car in the distance well and truly stuck on the road out of the village...

  2. Only every experienced driving in frezing rain once... Lethal.

Parked the car up on a very slight incline, handbrake on and in gear. Got out and noticed the car was sliding off under its own weight even though the wheels weren't going around. Fortunately I managed to jump back in and turn the wheels towards the kerb to stop it sliding any further.

Edit: that was in the west midlands in 2004 as posted above. Took 6 hours to get through Dudley to South Staffs.

Need to ask an expert on here why it does that.

Well feels warm out there today actually with no wind, watch out when those proper stronger easterlies come in,not had then strong at all yet.

I'm no expert but the reason that the snow is melting even when it's below freezing is due to Sublimation.. It's actually evaporating rather than melting due to the very dry wind and solar warmth from the sun.

"sublimation is most often used to describe the process of snow and ice changing into water vapor in the air without first melting into water...."

    https://water.usgs.gov/edu/watercyclesublimation.html

Nick also mentioned it in his NW Blog... https://www.netweather.tv/weather-forecasts/news/8752-the-beast-from-the-east-cometh

Very dry continental air and low temperatures at the surface will mean little melt of snow

With very low dew points / very dry air of the bitterly cold easterly flow next week, snow melt is likely to be fairly minimal too, similar to March 2013. Though the very dry air may lead to reduction of snow cover through evaporation or sublimation to use the technical definition.

Lol it's not him, it's the forum auto-correcting certain phrases. I think it dates back several years ago when the same poster (Ian Brown I think?) kept repeating the same few words to such an extent he was driving everyone barmy. So the mods applied an auto-correct to make him look silly.

I remember his "smoking gun" about David Cameron. That never appeared as it was utter dog biscuits <-- swear filter :D

i VIVIDLY remember the snow in 78 and 82 getting EVERYWHERE, so my tip to you lot is prep NOW, because once it all gets going, you may find you are chasing powdery snow all over the gaff. seal up any east facing vents, as long as they're not vents for gas heaters or fires of course. please do NOT seal them up!

keep your eye on your attics too! if it gets as bad as it might do, you may even have DRIFTS in your attic if it's a draughty attic. you'll be grateful for this advice, believe me, if it gets really bad.

I remember drifts in the attic from under the eaves of an older property... and a great big drift inside the shed from under an ill-fitting door.

March 2013  23rd had heavy snow here, absolute chaos, so could get a repeat this next week.

just shows get the right patterns and anything possible, I also believe the conditions in 2013 weren't as  extreme as this predicted spell

    Great pic..

I posted a link to March 2013 set up a few pages back but a low drifting up from France next Friday might give us a similar event albeit more snow than rain this time...

Snow and low temperatures late March 2013

A spell of severe winter weather brought significant snowfalls and unseasonably low temperatures to many parts of the UK from late March to early April 2013.

From around 10 March to 10 April the UK experienced a prolonged spell of below average temperatures with winds from the east or north, drawing bitterly cold air from northern Europe and Siberia. Persistent cloud cover resulted in cold, overcast days with a strong easterly wind often contributing to significant wind chill. The cold was often accompanied by snowfalls.
