  1. Hi UKweathergirl, For the shots that I have posted here I used either manual or Aperture Priority. Manual you set both the shutter speed and the DOF with the aperture. F8 is about right for most things. Anything moving will be blurred out of the shot as the shutter time gets slower. You will also need a tripod. Balancing the exposure is the important thing to get right. always under expose rather than over expose as it is the only way to retrieve detail in an image. It depends on what you will be taking photos of. I do one to one training too if needed. If you want to capture some motion blur on things then a shutter speed of about 1/6th or 1/3rd of a second should do it. This is @ 1/6th in Bruges on Friday. http://www.flickr.com/photos/sounds-and-images/3892779944/ If you need anything else, feel free to shout here or on Myspace, Twitter or my main website. Simon
  2. Hi Steve, thanks for that. I hope to see other members give long exposures a go too.. Sorry for making a pigs ear of things. Simon
  3. Can anyone open the links ok in this new thread? If you take shots out in the dark hours please join in. Sorry for making a c*ck up of things.. Simon
  4. Just to say I have asked admin to delete this thread due to me posting duff links.
  5. Excellent series of shots, looks like you found a tame Chaffinch there.. Love the lake shot, very moody..
  6. As I didn't see one I thought I would start a thread on night photography and long exposure shots. You need a good sturdy tripod, and if possible a cable release or gentle grip and fingers as you release the shutter. These new links should work. Here are a couple to kick off. Most are 30 seconds, though some are less. Feel free to ask questions etc.. Taken as a passenger in a car http://www.flickr.com/photos/sounds-and-images/3145772454/in/set-72157612294570504/ Marlow Bridge, Buckinghamshire http://www.flickr.com/photos/sounds-and-images/3346743301/ Main road junction http://www.flickr.com/photos/sounds-and-images/3218217313/ Now for some light painting, here I used a torch to light the tractor. While the shutter is open, move the torch over what it is you are photographing. You can use an external flash gun for this too (see second pic) http://www.flickr.com/photos/sounds-and-images/3826049190/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/sounds-and-images/3813532289/ This was an accident.. I was painting the tractor with torchlight, but miss timed the return of the combine. This means I lit te front of the tractor while it is being lit from behind. http://www.flickr.com/photos/sounds-and-images/3826048898/ And a last bonus shot.. http://www.flickr.com/photos/sounds-and-images/3814342098/
  7. The Seal pics load quite slowly for me, so I only saw one when I posted. they are excellent shots.. Tried Donna nook a couple of years ago and got tere too early and on a weekend! Oh well.. try again for me. Neilsouth, I see what you mean LOL, great funny pic!
  8. Sorry folks, I made a pigs ear of the links. Now I can't seem to edit my original post. I will therefore ask Admin to delete this thread and start again as it will become scruffy otherwise. Sorry for the c*ck up. Simon
  9. The site would not let me use the IMG coding to insert the images, so you will need to click your mouse on the links. All the links work, not the insertion of the images.

  11. Fantastic photos being posted. So I thought I would share some of mine..
  12. Some superbly taken photos above,it is nice to see them. Here are a few from me. 13. Like some of you here, I use a Nikon D300 (upgrade from D70s) I have shot nearly 30,000 shots since December 2008! I have a wide angle zoom and 50-500mm zoom for wildlife. For landscape I recommend graduated grey filters for sky to those new to DSLR photography. I use a two stop ( means it is two F stops slower for less exposure of the sky) I also have a less dark filter and a warm up (orange). If you are rich the Lee filter system is for you, if you are not like me then the Cokin system is perfectly fine. You also need the filter holder and adapter ring for the thread size on the front of the lens that you will be using. I am on Flickr and have a gallery on my own website. I am happy to answer any photography questions.. Don't forget the best tripod and tripod head you can afford, not the cheap crappy things sold by most camera shops for thirty quid!
  14. Just had the same cloud through Marlow, Took a couple of shots. And. Second pic taken about a minute after the first and has a filter to give the sky more detail, but the best had already passed. Not seen anything quite like this in awhile.... B)
  15. The South Bucks storm shield must be fired up at full power atm - everything is disappearing as it gets close to us or is skirting round us. We had a couple of minutes of stair rods at about 11am, which was enough to leave big puddles everywhere. 10 minutes of that and you would know about it. I predict that we get clobbered just as it's time to leave work - the thought of driving through a storm petrifies me! Mrs Missfit
  16. Skies are looking threatening around Le Havre. I haven't seen any lightning yet, but I wouldn't be surprised... http://www.sapn.fr/index.php?art=9&th=429 These other cams may be worth keeping an eye on as well. http://www.sapn.fr/index.php?th=69#
  17. Just heard a couple of faint rumbles coming from the cloud in your direction. Not sure if it will get any closer to us here (W/SW of you?)
  18. Where exactly are you UKSupercell? Not a dicky bird in Marlow, but looking on the radar we are just missing something. The storm shield is fully functional as usual!
  19. Sorry to spoil it for you, no thunder heard here in Marlow. I heard a faint rumble just before 5pm at My village Life (former shire horse centre on the A4 at Maidenhead) I had been looking at cloud all day ( I was performing there and am there tomorrow) Rather dissapointed at lack of the skyward action.. Clearing here now, though some action may be had in High Wycombe and beyond to the North.. I had hoped to get some lightening practice with the camera...
  20. After I read the update on Estofex yesterday, I watched the weather bulletins from TF1 and France 2 on line and was really surprised that no alerts were out for the area and they weren't even forcasting storms! The French TV bulletins only tend to cover overnight forecasts for anything unusual, but given the Estofex forecast, I was expecting at least the mention of a risk of something. There were a couple of reports on Meteociel last night of big storms in the area at about the right time, but I haven't been able to check the details this morning, as the search facility only goes back 9 hours. The storms seemed really localised, but intense, with one person reporting 50mm of rain (no timescale given) and I'm sure there was a report of a strike rate of 12 strikes per minute at one stage! From memory, they were around Cambrai / Valenciennes areas, posted around 10pm local time.
  21. Speaking to relatives near Thatcham (RG7 postcode) at 5.45pm, they had been in a deluge since 5pm and thought they had had "about 3 inches of rain and close to overhead thunder". They aren't usually ones to exaggerate, so it sounded pretty vicious!
  22. No sign of anything here in Wycombe, it's grey, cool and breezy with spots of rain in the air from time to time. Feels more like March than June and I'll be surprised if anything kicks off here today!
  23. Hello, My partner Simon and I are usually readers of Netweather rather than regular posters. We have followed this thread closely as my parents live near Winnersh and various friends, relatives and local sources have added extra details and anecdotes this week which could be of interest. Here goes: 1. My parents live in Ufton Nervet, between Newbury and Wokingham and they reported a "wall of water" arriving at around 3.45pm on Saturday. They said the winds were gusty, but not exceptional and that the rain rates were the talking point rather than the wind speed. The rain lasted for about 5 minutes. 2. Simon's best friends have a farm in Holyport, near junction 8/9 of the M4. On Saturday afternoon, the barn that they had been converting was flattened by strong winds. The local paper is claiming that a "tornado" (they used inverted commas) hit Holyport causing widespread damage, including demolishing an 8ft wall. Several trees were uprooted and debris was blown onto the motorway. Part of the story from the paper is on the website, but the main article and photos only seem to be in the printed paper. Photos should appear in the gallery on the website from next week. http://www.maidenhead-advertiser.co.uk/new...&story=2595 3. Simon's dad has taken photographs of a "snapped" lamppost in Slough, bent double at around 6ft height. If we can get the images, we will post them later. We were in Eton Wick, around 4 miles from Holyport on Saturday afternoon and although it was very windy and wet at times, the only notable thing was the day darkness at around 2.30pm, when the streetlights came on. It seems like we missed out while all hell broke loose around us! Sarah
