A thundery breakdown for my neck of the woods usually means a few spots of rain a distant flash of lightning, some rogue gusts of wind and it's over.

Sounds incredible, for mine it's a gradual cool down, layers of cloud and a squirt of drizzle if I'm especially lucky. Despicable climate we now have.

The snow, summer storms and variable weather I grew up with have been replaced with hot and dry or mild and dry, even rain now is a rare treat.  Sick to death of heat, the gentle summers with a nice 24c seem impossible to achieve. Boring.

There real difference this time was the heat was very dry, not our usual moisture laden plume. Thundery plumes normally have a high DP like around 18 - 20, there some moisture about that needs a trigger to pop. This time, although we got very hot, the lower levels were very dry, DP was only about 12, lower in some places. Hence even the cold front, which was an upper level one, with an upper low, couldn't get much moisture to ground level. So we ended up with dry storms, and not much rain along the front.

Thanks, appreciate the explanation  and understand the set up, it just seems whatever the set up it's a similar result these days from a plume, it's been a long time since a genuine intense storm for me so to keep enduring epic heat with no fireworks gets frustrating. Always next time eh?!

amazing! yea most of the amateur stations in the Ouse/Ivel Valley are recording around and over 40.C, it looked like the hottest place yesterday as well from Sandy/Bedford through Huntingdon out to Ely

Since moving here 5 years back, it does seem that little bit hotter and drier than Essex overall - it's also very low lying here so I think that adds a bit on - back in 2019 I had a reading on par with the record and yesterday was it was one of the hotspots again - we need an official weather station in this area! 😀

  4. Just stepped out for a lunchtime stroll and feel like I've been popped in a fan assisted oven, just need spuds and Yorkshire's! Massive breeze, surely mixing the air and would be even hotter if still?

Bitter sweet, I'm fascinated by breaking records but sad that our climate is screwed and no one needs to be this hot surely? Orrid

Well i'm off. Obviously i'm a dimwit who doesn't know anything. Been nice contributing. But when you get wrongly accused of being a troll its time to go.

It's quite clear that extreme is relative to the prevailing climate - 20c at the North pole would be extremely warm whilst at the equator may be a tad cool.  It is subjective too but a post stating its not extreme when today I recorded 37.9c which is 2nd to the Uk record (and my own), it is extreme from a statistical and relative point of view. Saying you'll eat your pants is inflammatory and suggests anyone who thinks otherwise is a fool or similar - that's how it comes across. Glad you're enjoying the heat and you're entitled too, make the most of it if's your cup of tea.

Said it earlier I think, but I very much doubt we'll see another day like tomorrow for at least 20 years. People will say that's ott because it's been three years since July 2019, but we're talking about smashing a record by 1.3c or more here, and the setup of the plume is about the most extreme and fierce you're ever going to get in this country. And at the perfect time of year too, within a 10 day window.

Temps are obviously rising with global warming, but it's entirely possible that the temperature achieved tomorrow will be a very longstanding record.

I'll bet you now we see 40+ again within 5 years. The changes I've seen in 35 years of weather watching are vast- hotter, less snow, less thunder, more cloud and less variaton overall with more and more longs runs of dry periods and occasional wet. Its changed dramatically imby's imo.

  7. Thundery looking skies tonight but nothing like that for a couple of days yet. There is a shower above me though with just virga, not experienced that too often, it's truly like the desert today.

Edit: now a few drops falling, I wasnt expecting any rain today. A paltry amount but I'll take it. Lovely cloudscapes around now with that altocumulus catellanus thundery look.
