My partner just booked Friday off even though we have a house move  next month and not much annual leave left. Why? His boss refusing to install any kind of air conditioning into the boiling, airless  attic room office my partner works in, meaning it will be unbearable in there by the end of the week. He felt so ill during the July heatwave despite being allowed to start and leave earlier. I can't believe we are in a situation whereby we have used up 3 days of annual leave this year because of red weather warnings and heatwaves and a boss who is completely unsympathetic to the working conditions of his staff.

Work places are going to have to take heatwaves much more seriously in the future, especially in smaller offices in converted buildings where there is no air con or circulation.

I'm very lucky that I work in an environment where there are lovely staff and lovely aircon.  I will admit I am terrible in this heat and really think that your partner's boss should be doing his level best to make the working conditions in heatwaves more bearable.  Heat can make people feel extremely unwell.  You have my full sympathies.

Heat to be back this week not up to 40's but I suspect strongly we will get a new record for August. Rainfall wise yesterday was first dry day for 18 Days. However rainfall amounts have generally been low with 7.2mm being the highest.

I expect more fires to breakout and with the fire service being cut down if the hot weather stays a long time there could serious ramifications.

I couldn't agree more.  I'm down here in Kent.  Many if not, most Farmers are now having to feed their livestock.  A Farmer friend of mine did mention today that there is talk of portable BBQS being banned for the moment.  At the risk of sounding a party pooper I personally think ALL BBQS and fires should currently be banned.  As a good friend of mine said and rightly so "it only takes one ember"... absolutely right in these conditions.

Your right it is. They break up Thursday here. She is 6 and doesn't sweat so more likely to over heat. My 10 year old however was doing ok and her temp is fine.

Not for me to advise love but I certainly wouldn't send my Daughter in tomorrow if she was like that.  I do say this respectfully x

we made the decision after last night  that our daughter is not going into a school which in their own words is not set up for hot weather like this. Not only that, but i don't want to be in 39c either, considering i was feeling ill in 31c.

Bloody good for you Dami, an extremely wise decision.  I've watched with horror your posts about the school.  If my lovely daughter was school age I'd be doing the same.

    Sympathise with you, D.S.

I speak from experience, as my Wife was a Senior Carer in a local Residential Care Home.

The Residents, a lot of them in their 70's, 80's and 90's, would complain if the Windows were open and ventilation Fans were turned on, even in the hottest Summer temperatures. She had to wear a Uniform that was hardly conducive to comfort, a Polyester Tunic and black nylon Trousers.

Below, is a photo of my good Lady at work, writing up the Care Plan of a Resident:

No wonder she came home dripping with sweat, and had to jump straight in the Shower, after a 12 hour shift.

Unfortunately, my Wife suffers from the Arthritic form of the AutoImmune condition, Psoriasis.

Close to the start of the Pandemic, she was advised by her G.P., to give up her job, as contracting the Coronavirus could have led to dire consequences, for my Wife. A Cytokine Storm could have resulted, with her Immune System going into overdrive, and attacking her organs and all soft tissue, in her body.

Although she is now in constant pain, giving up her job in my opinion has been a "blessing in disguise".

Having to suffer that level of discomfort, whilst looking after the elderly, being paid a pittance and putting your health at risk, simply isn't worth it!!

Mr Chris Fawkes has fleshed out his portfolio, to further his candidacy to become - Sir image.png.59675e8d8dd3f1bd00800a82bd031073.pngChris of Marple [Stockport].

Despite some initial depressing news, Chris ends his extended Forecast with some positive news:

Weather for the Week Ahead - BBC Weather

Another colleague of Chris Fawkes, namely Nick Miller, singing from the same hymn sheet, in a bid to become - Sir image.png.bcbd9eae7e4d20e13fe4a09fbdf1f288.pngNick of  York.

Just like his Colleagues and counterparts, I wish him well with his predicted easing of this infernal; [or should that be inferno], heat!!

    Regards,

    Tom. 👍 😓

Tom, I know exactly how the lovely Collette would have felt... When I worked in care the residents hated with a vengeance any window or door being open.  We had one extremely difficult elderly resident who would scream at the staff to "shut the doors and windows" even though the temperature was 90 inside and there was a nice little breeze outside. And although the home was lovely and set in beautiful parkland most of them would refuse to go outside in a lovely shady area.  Not funny and definitely not a healthy working environment.

I'm gonna run the a/c overnight and hope it doesn't complain about being emptied. It never has yet and I take the thing apart regularly to clean the coils, electrics and both fan motors.

Stupid question I know but in view of these ghastly temperatures which are very high would that put extra strain on an aircon system and God forbid it broke down?  Genuine question.

    Morning all again,

As I hinted at in my previous, I would now like to introduce you to mine and my Wife's family, of five fans.

Most trustworthy and longest serving, is Fabrizio Fan:

    image.thumb.png.f7a6818d034428ebbcb74ff8ad162054.png

He has been the most cost effective item, I've ever bought from Argos, and came with a remote control.

Now, Petunia the Pedestal Fan, another from the Argos Stable:

     image.thumb.png.859e9dffd2d55fcc4c22af6650d00a71.png

Both Fab and Pet, are in service in our Bedroom, if we can stop them flirting with each other!!

Now our Turkish Exchange Student Fatima Fan, who was also acquired from Argos and not shipped over, from Istanbul.

You've probably noticed, she's very pale for a young, Turkish Female but here she is:

    image.thumb.png.31f29760ce9789e9e9311aaf0d5f7320.png

Now, Todrana the Tower Fan, a young, tall, slim slip of an Italian Female, her skin darkened by many Italian Summers:

    image.thumb.png.1d1c68eca6858d4db11c58817b6aa514.png

Fats and Todi, are responsible for attempting to cool our Lounge, down.

Would you believe it, the above 4 fans will be joined by Tulip the Turbo fan, early on Monday Morning:, who is yet another Argos purchase:

    image.thumb.png.98bd37bda75e3822c2d93b1e791f14f2.png

My Wife is concerned that either Fab or Pet will have a breakdown/meltdown in the Bedroom. due to the excessively high temperatures.

She tells me, when they were allowed to have one on in the Residential Care Home where she worked, it was very effective at cooling down the temperature.

You may have noticed that all the above have 2 letter alliterated, Christian names.

Myself and my Wife are total "barnpots" [no kidding, Sherlock], and have given all our electrical items, the same 2 letter alliterated names.

Hence we have, Freddie Fridge, Frankie Freezer, Kenny Kettle, Michelle Microwave and Terry Television.

Right, enough Tomfoolery from Yours Truly, I need to turn Todi [Todrana], up.

    Stay cool and chill!!

    Regards,

    Tom. 👍 😓

Same here Tom.... Fans in the kitchen, sitting room and bedroom.  Two in each room.

Ok this is more a rant than anything else, but the main model thread is impossible to read these days.

I mean the amount of people who are 'excited' for this kind of heat...who are gloating, who are rooting for higher temperatures... 40, 41, 42!!! is absolutely unbelievable.

In my opinion it's absolutely irresponsible and they should be ashamed.

With this kind of heat a lot of people will suffer, end up in hospitals and potentially lose their lives.

    Rant over

I'm sorry Mathmatician I have to disagree with you.  You are not ranting.... YOU ARE TALKING PERFECT SENSE.  Like you I just cannot understand why people are goading for these temperatures.  Levels of which are a damned danger to life both human and animal.  My husband is twenty years older than me and is mid seventies in age.  He has also had the same sort of health problems as the lovely TomSE12, I had heart surgery in the latter half of last year (new valve) and am also asthmatic, add into that the flock of sheep I look after who although they have plenty of shade, water and grazing are panting away.  I am bloody sick with worry about what is looking increasingly likely to come temperature wise.  I am totally in agreement with what you say.  Why the hell there aren't Red Warnings appearing I really do not know.

  9. I might just mention for those of us on here with elderly relatives do keep an eye on their fluid intake.  A Facebook group I'm on, we have put a bit of a heat warning out.  In the comments one lovely lady went round to her elderly Mother's house in the morning.  Mother was confused, wobbly and very dehydrated.  Plenty of drinks later Mother was back to normal and well.  However if she is not at the house the Daughter is ringing Mother hourly and reminding her to drink and has filled the fridge with drinks, as a caveat to that, elderly hands cannot lift these heavy water bottles so its worth making sure that whatever they are drinking out of is easy for them to lift.

It might be the heat talking or it might just be genius.......

I've been well gel of my Mrs floating around the garden in her floaty dresses (and nowt else!) over the recent heat.....

So in preparation of the coming heat I've gone full 'Demis Roussos' & bought a white, hooded, kaftan (for garden use) over the expected heat....& I intend it to be the only clothing on my bones!!!!

"Ever & ever & ever & ever you'll beeeee the one......."

Don't knock it love, the word "kaftan" is weighing very heavily on my mind at present....

  11. Without being dramatic I am really concerned about how many people will fall foul of this heatwave.  There are so many vulnerable groups to be concerned about... I truly think anyone imploding with excitement at these temperatures needs to have a word with themselves.... In the UK we really do not have things in place to cope with this heat and I worry about the dire consequences of that.... I don't know much about weather warnings but I enjoy following this lovely site... I really do hope the Met Office start driving home the real danger of this heat very soon.  I know many areas are on amber but for some I think the stark consequences of this heat really need to be spelt out, for both humans AND animals.

I agree. It's gonna be hard but we will get through it. Met Office app for Leeds is saying a min of 21ºC tonight. Ouch.

Well, I don't know naff all about these models but I hope the awful temps talked about yesterday don't come to fruition.  To me that seems to be very major heat and threatening to people's health and welfare, as well as animals.  As it is, I agree its going to be  a difficult week.

The Elderly are most at risk plus other people in high risk groups. Considering the state of NHS if it comes off this could be serious. Fingers crossed it doesn't come off.

Absolutely couldn't agree more, it's been very close down here in Kent and I'm currently on steroids for Asthma, add into that Open Heart Surgery last year and I'm going to be extremely careful.  I've just ordered 3 fans coming tonight from Amazon.  I note you say about the NHS, that's spot on too.  There are so many high risk groups that are really going to have to be watchful.  Many elderly folk are utter tinkers and do not take in enough fluid.  I hope I'm wrong but I think if this all comes off (which I think it may well do, hence the 3 fans) I think the NHS is going to see a fair few heat related admissions.

Estofex have a level 2 warning covering most of our region in relation to the squall line due to move in later today.. potential for a short but sharp burst of 70mph gusts even inland!

Not what is needed after Friday!

Damn right it isn't Surrey, just out of interest what time is that squall line due to come through.  Very gusty here in Tunbridge Wells.

Met needs to issue red warnings now for southern, eastern and southeast England. Atleast so when people wake up they can asses the situation better. I fear with hinesight they might regret the decision

That thought has crossed my mind, by morning it will be too late to change any plans.
