  1. Was at the Queen Maragaret Hospital, Dunfermline, earlier and there's a couple of inches lying up there and light snow was falling the entire time i was there.

I used to live in one of the houses up behind the hospital and that hill was often quite good for catching the snow. Had some large drifts up there one year too.

PS: Ravelin, I'm sure you know already but Schools here have closed for the day - 2.00pm

twas fair dinging it doon for a couple hours, but stopped since jnr got home .. typical..

I knew as soon as they closed the schools the snow would stop! Luckily since the wife was there already I'd no need to rush off to pick up youngest (or to try to get one of the older two to get him). They didn't give much notice though, announcing at around 1:30pm they were closing at 2pm .

  2. Well Snooz has beat me to the Kemnay weather report but I can confirm a decent overnight fall. Total chaos in our house this morning watching school closure updates (our village ones open but lots elsewhere closed), and deciding whether the wife should attempt her cross-country journey to work (no, she's a teacher so is going to help out in one of the local schools for the day). Didn't have time to measure the snow depth so I'll go with Snooz's assessment, but certainly a good few shovel-fulls when clearing the drive.

Roads to Dyce not too bad, especially once I got onto the A96 at Kintore. Dyce doesn't have the same snow depth but definitely some accumulation since yesterday and it's still snowing on and off.

  3. Having looked at the garden when I let the dog out I came to a realisation. I'm gauging the snowfall against Nov 2010, when we'd to dig the cars out ever morning for over a week, we had snow avalanching off the roofs in amounts substantial enough to shake the house, bring the gutters down and knock panels off the fence. Now that was exceptional and I shouldn't really be expecting the same. Prior to the last 2 or 3 winters, with the exception of last year of course, what I have lying tonight would probably have constituted an exciting fall of snow.

  4. Right, come on, own up, who's built a precipitation barrier on the East coast around Forfar & Arbroath? That band of precipitation just doesn't want to move North of there, been stuck for at least 2hrs now! We've got an Amber warning for areas West of Aberdeen that I'm sure just about covers my house, yet so far what has probably fallen wouldn't make a single snowball.

  5. A wee bit of snow overnight in Kemnay but nowhere near the deep drifts I was hoping for to keep me off work (never a realistic prospect). So far, as others have said Aberdeen/Dyce is sat at around 2degC, brisk wind, but no precipitation.

All I want this winter is a proper blizzard, with good drifts and a day off work. After that it can do what it likes!

  6. Well I got out for my play in the snow, with the pretence of walking the dog, took a trip up Mither Tap on Bennachie (not right to the top as the last bit is awkward enough for the dog when there's no snow). Amazing what a difference there is in the snow there, even at car park level. It's only a couple of miles further west and 100m higher but the snow is lovely squeaky stuff that makes perfect snowballs, compared to the wet claggy stuff in the village. Not as much snow up higer as there was at the start of Dec though, but it's almost powdery and much easier to walk in than the heavy deep stuff last time.

Need a bit of a freeze now to preserve the snow we have, in preparation for Monday.

  7. Well for those in Aberdeen, there is snow inland. Here in Kemnay we've not got as much depth as I'd have hoped for as I think most of it fell as that graupel stuff rather than nice fluffy dry stuff. In fact I think temps are marginal here too as when I let the dog out earlier the snow in the garden looked a bit on the wet side and the snow falling at the time was bordering on sleety. Certainly enough for the kids to have some fun but any rise in temperature and I think it could easily thaw.

From what I saw of the radar I expect areas further south would be better as the showers seemed to be heavier and more frequent there.

  8. Aberdeen has a crazy snow shield in place. If you would all like to revert to meteoradar and zoom in on Aberdeen and just watch the precip bounce off the "force field"....rediculous!

That snowshield seems to extend over Kemnay at the moment too. I'd suggest Alford, not too far away, is getting plastered though. Surely those lines of showers are bound to shift at some point and Aberdeen will be under them for a bit.

  9. As others have already posted there was a second heavy shower in Aberdeen/Dyce area earlier. Wind gets up quite a bit during the showers too. Can't see us accumulating much though as they are quite short-lived events and there's little sign so far of the number of showers in the North Sea increasing. The Amber warning seems to be a reaction to the area that has been getting the most showers so far.

Looks like Glenshee Ski area may get a decent amount of much needed snow and the webcam shows some hardy souls out making the most of it (http://m.webcam-hd.com/ski-scotland/glenshee)

  10. The problem with snow showers off the North Sea is they can be rather hit or miss. So far in Dyce this morning we've had one glancing blow. Heavy whilst it lasted but very short lived. I'm hoping they pack in a bit closer together this afternoon.

We not sent anyone down to report from the far SW as it looks like Stranraer and the surrounding area might be getting snow now?
