  1. Sounds like graupel (soft hail/snow grains)? We had a bit of that and icy stuff earlier - in the right conditions it can turn things white pretty quickly.

Yeah that sounds like what it was. Anyway, not enough action on the radar worth hanging around for so off to bed to see what tomorrow brings. Snow for the kilted masses hopefully, and picture of BBC reporters in Wales and SW England no doubt.

  2. Try and pin down the date Ravelin and will pull the chart from Wetterzentrale archive.

Ah, now you're testing my memory (and I hope it isn't all muddled up with several events all merging into one).

Here goes....I'm sure it was the same event that meant I didn't get to college in Glasgow for a week. Some searching also suggests 85/86 was a cold snowy winter, which would fit in with my first year at college. I've also seen reference whilst searching for "12inches in late November 85" in reference to Scotland.

So if you really want to do it then search the charts for late Nov 1985.

  3. Thanks LS, I remember when I was a young boy Glasgow done well from a straight easterly. We got a good few inches with non stop snow showers.

As a lad I lived in a village just outside Airdrie. I can't remember exactly what year, but I'm guessing mid-late 80s, we had one huge snowfall. I remember it for several reasons,

    (1) My bedroom faced East and I watched the showers moving in, and the snow in our front garden deepen, until it was well above the low fence (first time I'd ever know it to be that deep).

    (2) It drifted across the fields and the gaps in the hedges. At our back gate it wast waist deep as it drifted through the gap between out house and the one next door.

    (3) Digging my dads car out in the mornings and pushing it out of the street so he could get to work (Ravenscraig). We lived on a bit of a hill and a JCB (neighbors daughters boyfriend) usually turned up and dug out the roads during the day, allowing my dad to get home OK. Then it would snow again and /or drift overnight, with us having to dig him out again the next day.

    (4) Taking our sledge down to the local bakery to get bread. All the roads were covered in snow and the main road from the M-8 into Airdrie was a lorry park.

So you can get good snow in the West from an Easterly, and I'm sure it lasted several days too.

  4. Since I haven't had a chance to check the models etc, is the whole system that was due to come in being pushed back west or is it tilting backwards (i.e. becoming more horizontal than vertical) as it moves in? If the latter I would assume that's probably good for us as it would surely mean a colder, more Easterly than South Easterly wind direction over Scotland?

  5. Well, well well....you go to bed thinking the snow is on it's way, for most at least if not necessarily for this area. Then you get up in the morning and lo and behold the snow isn't really on the way for most but your own chances have maybe increased. Maybe we should all just forget about models, forecasts etc. I'm sure it was more exciting as a kid when you took no notice of these but, oh my, the joy of waking up and looking out to a covering of snow when you had no expectations of it being there.

As for the current day, a lot warmer here this morning, with temps around freezing rather than yesterdays well below. Still looks and feels wintery so for us at least lets hope any showers in the next few days stay as snow and freshens up the current cover.

  6. Well it's what you might call a chilly start to the day here. Completely unscientific but the temps on my drive to work at 9am this morning taken from the car thermometer were,

    Kemnay -9°C -> Kintore -6°C -> Blackburn -5°C -> Dyce -3°C

An interesting contrast to the drive home yesterday evening at 6pm when the temp was -6°C in Dyce and got slightly warmer the further inland I went (rare that happens).

Lovely morning though with lots of pale pink snow and the trees are still thick with it due to the lack of wind.

That Friday graphic on the BBC this morning came as a bit of a surprise, I thought all that snow that was all supposed to be down in Wales and SW England? Great if Scotland sees some of it but looking like the NE corner might miss out. Just dump some on the ski slopes and I'll be happy though.

  7. Watching that front off the east coast - looks to be turning back just a little now, notably to the north off Aberdeenshire

Go oan yersel scandi high cauld; push, push, push...

Big flakes of snow falling in Dyce now. Probably from the showers that were moving in from the NW rather than the rain/snow band moving West again. What's going to happen to those showers now they are colliding with the stalled rain/snow band though? All going to stall and back up inland, much like the A96 was backed up this morning?

  8. Yep, a huge positive is that dewpoints are now below 0C in many places so what falls is likely to be snow and is likely to lie. The front has stalled just off the coast so we've got maybe another 2 hours before it starts to head back our way I reckon.

Ah, that'll be just about the right time to hit Aberdeen/Aberdeenshire during the 'escape from work' rush hour then.

    Oh joy! fool.gif

P.S. I love snow, I don't mind driving in it either, I just hate everyone else driving in it at the same time as me.

  9. Oh Ravelin what a nightmare, should've checked the traffic cam before leaving it showed how bad the tyrebagger was about 8:45ish - they just didn't have a chance to clear it as traffic was already on it when snow was falling sad.png - days like this glad I don't have to move, O.H. was at work before it even started!

Assuming my wife got to work OK as she was out just as it started and doesn't have to go near the A96.

My normal routine is to glance down at the A96 as you cross over it at Kintore. If it is backed up or covered in snow then I avoid it at all costs. This morning it looked clear so I took it, only to grind to a halt 500yrds down the road. Perversely, when it snows I normally take the road to Hatton of Fintry from Kintore and get to Dyce that way (even before I got the 4x4). Although it is twisty and undulating it's usually clear enough and a much better option.

Last time I had a chance to look at traffic camera before I left the house it looked clear. Colleagues say it didn't start snowing in Dyce until around 8:30am though.

  10. A few quick snaps I took with my phone this morning before heading to work ('d have been better not bothering).

    https://forum.netweather.tv/gallery/album/1191-kemnay-14_jan_2013/

2hrs before and this scene would have been all green! It took around 1hr15 for this to accumulate. Didn't get a chance to measure the depth, too rushed getting drive and car cleared and youngest to school.

  11. it came at just the wrong time for school buses/rush hour, was falling so fast that there are now reports of lots of stranded vehicles and school buses having to turn back

Don't I know it! Dropped youngest off at school at 9am, was on my way to work by 9:10am as usual, with a normal arrival time of 9:30am. I eventually arrived at work at 11:10am after sitting on the A96 car park for 2 hrs going nowhere very slowly. The hill at Tyrebagger was unploughed and possibly even ungritted so various abandoned cars on it by the time I got that far. Main problem seems to have been an accident on an icy stretch between the 2 Blackburn roundabouts. The minor roads were largely OK, wet an sleety, but the A96 is a nightmare when there's snow, mainly due to the volume of traffic. I should have known better and went the back roads like I usually do when it snows!

  12. Well pretty much a non-event here too so far. Temp been sitting around 1degC all day but as with yesterday, it just doesn't feel that cold. Only some light snow in the village but not lying at all.

As a result I'd to go find some snow so took the dog up Millstone Hill a few miles west of the village. As we were driving there in the car we could see it snowing over the hill. Decent sized wet flakes to start with, falling absolutely vertically at a rate so slow you'd think they were scared of the ground. Snow level on the hill was probably around 250-300m, but even where it was lying it was never deep (1cm max, but difficult to tell as it's mostly trees and heather). Very wintry looking though. One thing that stood out was that the path, even at the top, was wet with puddles. We really need a good cold snap to freeze the ground. Nearer the end of walk the snow turned to really fine stuff, the snow equivalent of drizzle, for a bit before fizzling out as we got lower down.

  13. Just finding a quick few minutes to check the latest situation and report in. Glad to hear that things may still be better than the met office weather site may suggest. As usual we'll just have to wait and see but at some point this winter I want to see a good blizzard!

I spent most of the afternoon outside watching the boys play footie, followed by a quick run before it got too dark. Is it just me, or are there sometimes when you go outside and you just think "hmmm....feels like it's going to snow"? Well today that feeling wasn't there. It was cold and wet, with even the odd bits of sleet. It didn't feel THAT cold though, probably the lack of any wind helping with that.

On a happier note - Kemnay 2 Colony 1 (After Extra Time)

Snooz, pity about the game tomorrow but at least you're through to the next round. Looks like Bogbeth was on of the few playable parks in Aberdeenshire today, surprisingly, as most other games were postponed (due to the rain I'd guess).

  14. Aye just seen tap o' Bennachie is white, not really any good at estimating snow line but mebbee 400m+?

so perhaps not too far away if you're also getting the sleetiness Howham.. GL everyone smile.png

    - our Footie is in Aberdeen tomorrow so still might get it played before the fun starts

Difficult to see due to it being partially shrouded in cloud when I was out earlier but I'd say 350-400m as Millstone Hill (to the left of Bennachie) is 408m high and had wet looking snow on the top. It was a definate mix of rain and sleet with temp around 2 degC.

Still no call off of the footy game at Bogbeth so it's going to be fun standing on the sidelines today. Everything warm and waterproof I have will be getting worn.

  15. Liking what I'm hearing/seeing so far. Seems much better snow potential from the last few runs compared to earlier in the day.

    Come on! Undercutting.....

    h850t850eu.png

I've started to pick up an understanding of what a lot of the technical terms used here mean but 'undercut' is a commonly used one I've not fathomed out yet. If someone could explain, or provide a link to an explanation, I'd be very grateful.

  16. I'm hoping here in Aberdeenshire we'll see some snow in the next few days but I too am doubtful it will amount to much. I think the Met Office warning is based on a easterly wind bringing showers in off the North Sea. I'm not sure that will show very well on the precipitation charts at the moment though will it?
