Kind of want Spring to hurry on in now though and for marginal snow events (& the rain) to take a hike
Thunderstorms please.
I know what you mean. There is allways a tipping point for me when i go from wanting snow and ice to sun and warmth.
Ithink for me now, that time is nearly here.
One last chance perhaps over the next week,10 days and then that will be it.
Anyway the nights are getting longer, time to get outside and do stuff, not sitting with the outside light on praying for a snowflake!
-
Well,at least cornwall got a yellow warning for a bit.Big upgrade for here.
Not a bad winter really to get a yellow warning.
-
Nice heavy snow at the moment in Princetown. get the dew point down and could be white again tonight!!
Should build yourselves a ski resort, you would make millions!
-
Indeed... The met office have warnings over cornwall for monday, and not for rain this time!!
Could only happen in cornwall.
If you look closely at the warning,it actually misses out the far west (lands end etc)
Wouldn't want to be in penzance right now.
You would think that just for once, the meto would show a bit of compassion and include us all.
p.s raining here now

Indeed and another way of seeing things with my "glass half full" approach is that without the marginality that we currently have, we would otherwise be in a really boring zonal setup.
Eh, no thank you. Time will tell of course, but chances are that we are still on the cusp of something good happening before time truly runs out.
Yes, but with a really boring zonal setup, there's allways the chance of things changing for the better.
At the moment, what have i got to look foreward to? oh yes i know a boring zonal set up!
I suppose i'am just a "glass-half-empty " sort of guy

If the NAE is right, dewpoints might became just about favourable enough later but by then the showers could be fading away lol. However im happy enough to see Hail!
Dont you find it strange we are getting so much activity today with a straight northly?
Normally it would be quieter here with the showers running down though the west and the islands.
-
And you too sir, had SNOW yesterday, did you not?
The brevity of the SNOW and the fact that it doesn't lay for long doesn't help matters but one should be grateful, given the number of winters we both have seen snow failure.
Well, for about 2-3 mins at the end of a hail shower.
But yes, you are right to see one single snowflake most winters here is lucky.
It just makes this set up at the moment so frustrating as we dont get many chances.
-
Getting frustrated now.
1) gale force northly wind straight from the artic.
2) 6 feb
3) continous stream of heavy shower activity.
All sounds perfect, trouble is it's RAINING.
-
What i dont understand is why certain people even look at the GFS runs if they are so poor.
My advice is DONT. and then you wont get all worked up.It's not healthy you know.

Sick of them here in kent...... Boooo..... Bad winter here so far regards snow......
Try living here then. These slider lows are a total waste of time down here. Just rain rain rain rain!

If we didn't get Snow on the Sunday , we would by Monday on current charts ..., Must admit it is starting to look a little better for us tonight
I wonder if us might include cornwall aswell.
LOL only joking.
Wife +eldest son coming back from blackpool sunday night, might be intresting

Wind really starting to gear up now,the sea is turning white. No fishing today i fear.

Just had a heavy hail shower followed by about 3 mins of snow. A lot of big black clouds around

Here's a question for AWD and the more knowledgeable on here.
On Wednesday we have a northerly direct from the Arctic, it's early February and yet our temps for here are progged to be 6c.
That's not that cold for this time of the year with a direct northerly - anyone know why?
That is the exact same question thats been bugging me.
If you look at the SLP chart, it screams potential to me.
This is'nt late april is it?
-
There are three factors at play here.
1. Prevailing wind in N hemisphere is west to east as we all know, the areas you quote are on the eastern side of a large land mass therefore will tend to be colder in winter than Scandi with its prevailing onshore winds.
2. Sea currents are a big influence as even allowing for point 1, NW Europe is significantly warmed by the gulf stream
3. Rossby waves (from memory I think this is correct but happy for GP, Chionio to correct), whereby the rockies deflect the jet stream tending to give SW winds across UK and NW Europe.
Jason
Yeah, all seems obvious when you put it in simple points.
Feel a bit silly for asking the question now, but thankyou anyway. I've learnt something today.
-
Thanks for that Yarmy.
So in a nutshell,it's all down to the gulf stream.
Didn't realise it's effects whent so far north and east

While it's a bit quieter here,i'll ask a question i asked a few days ago.
Being a newbie when it comes to the models, how is it that the really cold air in the northern hemisphere always seems to be the other side of the atlantic.
If you look at the hudson bay/newfoundland area,it's nearly allways far colder than say the north scandi siberia area.
Why is this? they both share similar latitudes and are large land masses.
I've got a hunch it might have something to do with the pv which seems to reside there most of the time.(this could be totally wrong though)
-
yes he goes into much more detail than alan partridge/david braine.
Just to say that my remark was in no way having a go at david braine. we are lucky to have him.
-
Hot news,iv'e spotted a trend in the weather, ian ferguson presenting on spotlight!
Question is, will the trend continue??
-
Still a newbie when it comes to the models but iv'e got a question which keeps occuring every time i view them.
Why is it that it always seems so much colder over in the hudson bay ,newfoundland area than north scandi siberia area?
They are both share similar latitudes and are large land masses.
Just allways seems those lovely purples are reserved for the other side of the pond.
I think the answer could have something to do with the PV been located there most of the time, but i could be wrong about this.

Ahaha, we like to share in the SW.
Ian has his awesome forecasting to share. David has his famous little wave at the end of each programme at the same few seconds just before the very end of the programme.
He should come and play cricket with me, his timing of the wave is impecable.
Not so sure about his dodgy diolog as the programe ends though. Ithink it's a case of, yes we have no bananas today.
Drives me mad.

I walked into the lounge where my OH was watching the local news/weather, but muted cos he was on the phone! I couldn't understand why Ian was talking about the Channel Islands when it should be David's job! it wasn't until I saw the other presenters that I realised what was going on! Agree that they are the two best forecasters. If you want to see Emily, cornish snow, you'll have to watch Breakfast!
I do but it's just not enough.
-
Ian Ferguson on Spotlight...has he been transferred in the January 'transfer window'? He must have been expensive!
Hope emily wood hasn't gone out on loan
-
Just switched on spotlight to watch david brain and guess what, ian fergusson presented instead. Is this just a one off or can we expect his company more often?
Hope so.
