1989 really was a great summer but personally i would put 1984 ahead of it despite the statistics being slightly the opposite just how it felt at the time.Along with 1983 a trio of great summers.I would put both 1984 and 1989 better than 1990 with 1990 ranking alongside 1983.None of the trio of great 80s summers were bettered until 2018 except for 1995.The most distinct thing i remember was after almost 5 years of of wet or relatively poor weather from summer 1984 it suddenly switched in April 1989 to dry and the land that summer is something we hadnt seen since 1984.

1978 I dont recall too much about this except that we had a lot of snow
1979 After spending a week digging out the farm lane by hand in January, February decided it would fill it all back in again, cold with large amounts of snow and drifts.
1986 My favoiurite, amazing just a mile down the road there was only a 4 inch cover of snow yet on the hilltops where we lived the snow was deeper and drifted the entire month in a stiff Easterly wind.We used a snowblower twice a day to keep the farm lane clear to get the milk out where i worked at 365 metres asl.The cold was brutal similar to 'Beast from the east' only we had it for almost 6 weeks continuous.I could ride my my off road motorcycle over the frozen snowdrifts under the walls into the next fields. The thickest ice i have ever seen, resevoirs frozen to 18 inch thick.Almost the entire month was subzero. The nearest thing to 1947 i will probably ever see.
1991 Very cold with lots of snow and deep drifts, filled the road level to walltops.
1996 Opened the house door to find a 5 foot drift,we kept a shovel in the porch in them days to get out the house except for 1979 when we had to get out through the upstairs window.Dads van was buried in the yard, was hard to make out it was there.
