  1. I'll take a week of freezing weather for the decompaction it brings to the soil, always the chance of snow once that's in place and 48hrs is the max forecast period for snow according to Paul Hudson, at least it will keep me off the cricket ground I look after here in North Lincs as there's nothing to be gained from walking on frozen grass except damage. Less than 100 days to the start of the season !.

  2. I was 16 and ended up with about a 15 mile walk to deliver a birthday card to my girlfriend because in Sheffield the gritters were on strike, this resulted in several inches of compressed snow/ice on all the roads and public transport had been withdrawn, the only vehicles moving were the occasional 4wd and back then there weren't very many of those. The snow depth outside my parents house was level with the window sill. For those that know the area I walked from Rosa Rd , Crookes, to Woodseats and back.

  3. Met O giving lots of subtle ( and not so subtle ) hints in their tweets relating to staying safe in freezing weather, temperature records etc. Suggests to me that they are seeing some serious potential in their modelling for severe weather ahead.

The 12z ECM control would pack in some good convection from the north sea,...lake effect snow?,...to be concluded

Very cold easterly flow, found when a high pressure sits over Scandinavia and brings air to the UK from Siberia. If conditions are right, significant snow can result.

  5. I'm a volunteer ( but basically full time ) groundsman for a cricket club in North Lincs and this has been physically the hardest summer I can remember, trying to retain moisture in the square is almost impossible and yet without it you cannot prepare a match strip which is both playable and safe. Walking behind a large petrol powered mower or sitting high up on a 2 ton roller for hours in 30+ degree heat is draining to say the least. The outfield has had one cut in five weeks due to hardly any growth , normally it's twice a week so that has saved some diesel at least. Temperatures out in the middle where there is no shade and the sunlight reflects up off a bleached white strip have been unbelievable. I'm old enough to remember 1976 and I know we've had other hot spells but this one seems to have dragged on for longer with very little relief.

Not sure warranted on Monday here at least.. benchmark for warnings nowadays seems increasingly  much lower than yesteryear.. yellow warnings when 10mm rain forecast or a cm of snow. Soon we will just have permanent warnings because there is some weather about!

I know I heard that they raised the trigger points for what is classed as a heatwave, did they do the same for warnings ?

I know...I've watched friends on the other side of the country with loads of snow in envy! Fingers crossed from tomorrow night lots of looking out the window and radar watching for me lol

I've missed the snow by only a few miles here near Scunthorpe , felt like they had upgraded the snow shield over the summer. Hopefully this one will break through , looking at trying to enable either a webcam or a weather station up at the cricket ground as it's relatively high up and away from much of the urban heat shield.

Nice ground but didn't ever play there.  Many games at some other not so pretty grounds in Scunny, used to play for Louth. Went for a ranger Job at Normanby Park years ago but didn't get it. Came with a house but I'm not bitter. Most memorable cricket moment in Scunny was when they had a quick who had played a few games for India. Hit one of our guys in the box. Was treated by his father who poored a bottle of water down his jock strap. Poor lad couldn't walk. How funny it is when it is not you.

To make weather related, would look lovely with snow.

That's be App Frod and Scunny Town I guess. If this snow hits as forecast I can see me not getting any work done on the ground for a week or so , would love a decent snow event, not had one for years.

Remember that 06z GFS that someone posted that I talked to - forget who posted it now and cant be bothered to check back through....but it should the change of the Ural ridge that doesnt seem to want to go anywhere linking up with the enhanced north pacific ridge emerging. Those not liking the ECM do need to get a bit of perspective. The 240h EPS shows a distinctly chilly pattern for the UK as we head towards mid month, and we are not a million miles away from a cross polar link here with associated cold air leakage out of the arctic.

All of this hits the vortex - driving warm air up where it doesnt like it.....and setting us up for 2 subsequent possibilities: a continental/atlantic battle ongoing into the second half of December but also the opportunity for significant vortex stress. The first precursor pattern that setup around 12 Jan 2018 when the most unbelievable vortex split occured (the date that reanalysis has traced the first signs of significant vortex stress) looks like this.

Rotate the EPS anomaly chart 90 degrees clockwise in your head. Notice anything?
