Possible severe storm Monday 28th October 2013 Part 3
Charlton Adam snow replied to Coast's topic in Storms & Severe Weather
Some of the comments from people about the Met Office 'looking stupid' if this isn't Armageddon beggars belief, sorry folks but Already just outside Yeovil a big tree blew down and that was during the squally gusts earlier! Previous storms with winds not as bad claim lives. I'm a weather fanatic like most of you - but sometimes the comments made when there's an event unfolding are ridiculous! OK, I feel better now!!! I'm 3 miles east of Somerton in Somerset ( driving to Reading at 9am tomorrow) -
All, Today is already starting to look quite lively, but just to illustrate how the shower situation developed during Saturday; Notable to see the line of small echos starting to develop from 11:00am, then if you look through the sequence, a line of intense precip develops with more activity arriving from France and just sitting across a good part of Somerset most of the afternoon and early evening. Yeovilton recorded over 21mm, the highest official total in the South West, but I wouldn't be surprised if there were much higher 'local' recording from somewhere! http://www-nwp/~meso/Radar/radar_images/radar130727/nimrod_1307271230.png http://www-nwp/~meso/Radar/radar_images/radar130727/nimrod_1307271300.png http://www-nwp/~meso/Radar/radar_images/radar130727/nimrod_1307271330.png http://www-nwp/~meso/Radar/radar_images/radar130727/nimrod_1307271400.png http://www-nwp/~meso/Radar/radar_images/radar130727/nimrod_1307271430.png http://www-nwp/~meso/Radar/radar_images/radar130727/nimrod_1307271500.png http://www-nwp/~meso/Radar/radar_images/radar130727/nimrod_1307271530.png http://www-nwp/~meso/Radar/radar_images/radar130727/nimrod_1307271600.png http://www-nwp/~meso/Radar/radar_images/radar130727/nimrod_1307271630.png http://www-nwp/~meso/Radar/radar_images/radar130727/nimrod_1307271700.png http://www-nwp/~meso/Radar/radar_images/radar130727/nimrod_1307271730.png http://www-nwp/~meso/Radar/radar_images/radar130727/nimrod_1307271800.png http://www-nwp/~meso/Radar/radar_images/radar130727/nimrod_1307271830.png http://www-nwp/~meso/Radar/radar_images/radar130727/nimrod_1307271900.png http://www-nwp/~meso/Radar/radar_images/radar130727/nimrod_1307271930.png http://www-nwp/~meso/Radar/radar_images/radar130727/nimrod_1307272000.png http://www-nwp/~meso/Radar/radar_images/radar130727/nimrod_1307272030.png http://www-nwp/~meso/Radar/radar_images/radar130727/nimrod_1307272100.png http://www-nwp/~meso/Radar/radar_images/radar130727/nimrod_1307272130.png http://www-nwp/~meso/Radar/radar_images/radar130727/nimrod_1307272200.png http://www-nwp/~meso/Radar/radar_images/radar130727/nimrod_1307272230.png http://www-nwp/~meso/Radar/radar_images/radar130727/nimrod_1307272300.png http://www-nwp/~meso/Radar/radar_images/radar130727/nimrod_1307272330.png

Whilst this great hot spell looks like its on its way out (for the immediate future), putting things into perspective, this has been pretty impressive when you look back: Since 6th July 2013 somewhere in the UK has reached 28C or higher, a run of 18 days in a row now. Looking back at data to 1959, the following periods where somewhere in the UK reached 28C or more for 13 or more days in a row are: 16 days 2006 second half of July (including record UK July max) 13 days 2003 early Aug (including record UK max) 19 days 1997 Aug 17 days 1995 Aug 15 days 1995 late July/early Aug 15 days 1976 Aug 22 days 1976 late June/early July 20 days 1975 late July/Aug No such 10 (or more) day spells like this occurred in the 1960s. So this is the longest such period since August 1997 (whilst yesterday was also the hottest day of the year for England and UK as a whole. Happy days!

Sorry to upset those who had nothing last night, but that was an intense line of thuder storms, which kept going over us (East of Somerton and North of Yeovilton) mid/south Somerset then into North somerset. I think it lasted over an hour - but the amazing thing was the lightning rate - must have easily been every 2/3 seconds sustained for ages and every 20/30 seconds the thunder literally shook the house. It woke us up at about 3am, the noise of the rain on the vellux windows (open) which splashed in on us. Have no rain guage, but there must have been some pretty big totals, judging by the large puddles this morning. I'm sure those who missed out will get something soon.......snow in September maybe (wouldn't surprise me based on what's happening with the climate!)

It's looking great for some summer heat! Although I've just come back from a work trip to Madrid and found the temerature (35c on Weds) ,but climbig to 37c today and the weekend - pretty unbearable (yellow heat warnings issued). They get temps pushing 42c and refer to it as the 'Hell heat'- it was great to get back toBristol at 13c on Weds evening!! So let's just hope we keep this warmth for a few weeks - good to see the Met Office outlook now suggesting a settled spell for most of the UK until the end of July!!!

Snowing moderately here now- some nice big flakes. Grass is turning that light green colour as it tries to settle - come on need something heavier!!! -
Similar rollercoaster weather driving from Exeter home to Charlton Adam (Somerton)-temp started at 7c, dropped to 4c by Honiton with heavy sleet. Going along the A303 over the Blackdwn Hills, temp down to 2c, hail, then snow, which settled on the fields and verges etc. then descended down into Somerset - clear sky temp up to 3c, but roads wet. Kids said there was snow around 3:30pm at their school near Langport. Watching these forums how many people dismissed any winters weather??? as it's March! Points West (Fergie is back) showed 4c max for Sunday, with snow for Sunday night and -2c. Ok many of us like the snow, but feel sorry for farmers and growers. Interesting times ahead through next week!

Snowing lightly still here - has been for last 2 hours but notable now that the thin layer of slush on the cars is frozen, so anything else that falls later (still think we may be surprised by the morning - here's hoping) will definitely settle. Even the trampoline in the garden, that was really wet about an hour ago, now has a light frozen spakling crust on it. Temp now -0.2 and still falling, wind is very gusty and bitter feeling. Charlton Adam, 3 miles east of Somerton, South Somerset PS hope those in Cornwall/West Devon get good covering - lived there up until 3 years ago and know how frustrating it can be in the far west!!!
-
Snowing lightly here, but some larger flakes here and there. Temp down to 1.6c and bitter easterly blowing. Even though the ground etc is wet - there is already thin ice/slush on the car roof! I'm about 65m ASL , 3 miles east of Somerton. (Friends in Shepton report heavy snow falling and settling now)

Just got home from work.....left Exeter at 4:15pm, arrived here at 11:45pm. Atrocious rods, got stuck on the A303, turned back to Exeter, up the M5, down to 1 lane - off at Taunton, down the A358, stuck again, but got pushed by some good Samaritans.....easily 7/8 inches widely. Back on the A303, one lane all the way back to Somerton turn off.....after this, had enough of snow for at least a week or two!!!! Sorry for those who still haven't had any yet!!

I was brought up in Crownhill, before moving to Ellbridge (nr Hatt - Tamar Valley), Last 2 years live in Somerset, Charlton Adam nr Somerton (10 miles north of Yeovil) long way from the coast and further east, but very dry. I used to get 'frustrated by the 'snow shield' around Plymouth - but its location so far west and south is the issue - but whata place to live, sea, moors Argyle and pasties!!! Anyway light snow grains since 8am this morning settling on the ground - still have 90% snow cover about 2-3 inches deep - but main roads clear. maybe the system over SE will make it further west!!!
