Interestingly GFS 06z has me for clear skies tomorrow whereas the local TV forecast has me for overcast with any breaks only possible the further NW in the region.
I don't have any of the special glasses are there any recommendations for tricks to see it? Not necessarily to stare directly at the sun, but if I was to reflect the suns light with a mirror onto a flat surface will I be able to see the 'chunk' taken out of the sun?

In the last 15 mins the western end of the PPN over Wolverhampton heading to Worcester has just evaporated into nothing where as the eastern side along the streamer continues to develop.
Immediate attention to herts into North London, then 1 hour behind move east into North Essex - if it holds together then south Essex & NW kent-

There is some hope for us after-all then.

Well I think this is the most confused I've been with any winter spell.
We've got BBC National forecasts, regional forecasts and BBC weather online (although they're generated from UKMO data I asumme) all saying something different.
Plus the NMM precip and Euro4 plus others showing differences for tonight.
Just shows the perils of forecasting snow! -
current temp is now 3,7 was 3.9
dp is now 0.9 was 1.9 , 23 minutes ago so dropping in strood
Yes DP is dropping and should continue to drop as aforementioned.
PPN slowly creeping eastwards as well. Hopefully might fall as snow in heavier bursts.

Laying here, at least on roofs. Lighting is poor at the moment!

Have faith
Fingers crossed!

This big blob over london looks FANTASTIC
Seems to be intensifying. It kind of looks like the stuff over the N and W of East Anglia will go to the east of us.
-
Light snow falling here.. anything heavier will 100% be snow and should begin to settle even down to sea level.
Shower train appears to be setting up..
And hopefully we're in the right place.
-
light snow falling in strood so the lamp posts says
Nothing here (Wainscott). Although I'm not able to view any lamp posts.
-
Showers to the north of London heading towards Medway t minus 1 hour.
As of 20.00 DP is 0C and Temp is 2C. Will snow settle at those temps?- 1

Have to admit it felt quite pleasant out of the wind while on my way to work this morning. Did notice some patches of frost in sheltered areas though.
Hopefully some snow to come for us southerners.
From a IMBY perspective DPs look favourable after 15z. Just gotta get some PPN down here. -
4K model for tonight, hmm
I'll take that!

Wow.. raining here in Chatham, very strange
I'm in the Wainscott/Hoo area.
Although as I'm typing it has now stopped.
-
SNOWING here in Medway. So another one south of the Thames.

Awaiting some PPN here as the clouds are rolling in . . .
Still quite a frost here so hoping it'll be snow if not might get some freezing rain. -
This site may be of use to people for tonight for dewpoint watch and tomorrow for wind watch
That's a great site. Thanks for the link.
Much more up to date and detailed than XCWeather.
Finers crossed for some snow come morning. Those lower DPs are slowly moving S/E.

There will be no further updates in the thread.
No winter forecast.- every element that was already in here has been covered off in the net Weather forecast which has been released today unusually early.............
S
I was looking forward to reading your expanded thoughts/forecast for the upcoming winter, Steve.
I guess whatever you were going to post is along the same lines as the NW forecast then?

Thanks so much!
Had a quick read and it's very well explained and easily digestible even for someone like me who hasn't studied meteorology outside of it being a hobby. So kudos to the team.
Looks like we could have a good winter! -

8th JAN.2003.
Perhaps doesnt look much at face value but 6 hours later a convergence zone developed in the Thames Estuary and a snow streamer began around the Southend area and developed further WSW, towards N.W. Kent and S.E. London. Started snowing here, on the Kent/London border, around 7 a.m. and finally petered out in the early afternoon, depositing around 4 inches. Worst hit areas reported around 8/9 inches, between Southend and Dartford, also places with a bit of elevation over N.W.Kent.
I remember this event quite well. I was only 13 at the time and remember thinking how great the timing of it was (7am ish) as it meant I got the day off of school. Alot of people got stuck for most of the day unfortunately.
I think I had 5-6 inches here and it seemed to be turn into more 'wet snow' just before midday for about an hour. It petered out here mid afternoon and at one point we had some of the 'polystyrene balls' that Paul referred to a few year later.
Definitely the Greenhithe/Dartford area bore the brunt of it with patches of snow remaining considerably longer than in Medway.
ETA: Does anyone have the post from Paul with his explanation of the 'polystyrene balls'?

Newton Poppleford Weather All Time Records Highest Rainfall Rate: 245.2 mm/hr 16/10/2014 20:06.
Is that what you just experienced? I can't even imagine. Surely that would be like sheets of rain falling?
-
It's so bright I can't believe its not closer to you
Hasn't moved further east from what I can see...if anything it looks like it's creeping extremely slowly westwards
Looking again, you might be right. Nontheless, whatever the shift, it's almost negligible.
I'm surprised you're able to see so much, don't you live in S.E London now?
-
Is it coming this way?
I don't think so. We're right on the edge here and it's slowly moving east, plus any CG's seem to be sporadic and random rather than concentrated in specific areas.
-
Couple of flashes here, although most of the action is further east.
Looks like Brighton has been taking a battering again. http://www.theargus.co.uk/news/11529357.Flooding_as_torrential_storms_hit_Brighton/?ref=mr
