  1. That's what I do as well; usually a sign of strong convection if you see a few strong pixels even if the PPN doesn't match. The PPN did explode very suddenly to the South and West of here so I think that's what must have happened.
  2. That is probably what is happening, but the radar return is very different. Last night it seemed truer to what what you were seeing on the ground?
  3. No. It needs to edge a little bit closer to Reading first and sit there rotating for while. About 24 hours or so should do it!
  4. Thanks for that. Although it does mean that I shouldn't be so excited about those bright radar returns to my east!
  5. I've noticed in the past that when you have a system developing overhead the radar doesn't match what you see on the ground. I often look for small red echoes that tell me there is a general increase. I think it may be the sudden lifting that is going into the circulation, so it shows as PPN, but actually it's rising. Makes sense to me anyway!
  6. Ceratinly looks like a mesoscale feature. There was a general flow from the East towards the other area of PPN associated with the main front for most of the afternoon. It would seem that the two airmasses colliding might have set something off. Over to @Ben Sainsbury for that one!
  7. Radar: Traffic for same area: No way traffic would be flowing at normal speed if that was heavy snow. Anyone in Wokingham or Bracknell able to confirm conditions? HAving trouble locating any cameras.
  8. That's known as the @kold weathergap. It's a recently discovered mesoscale feature...
  9. Yes, I always use it as a proxy for where snow is falling to confirm. There would have been les people travelling today because of the snow this morning, but even with light traffic the roads go orange in heavy snow as drivers slow down. Unfortunately, many of the traffic cameras on the M4 around J10 and 8/9 are out of action due to roadworks.
  10. It's your revenge! Does your birthday suit pledge still stand? I'm comparing the radar image to google traffic maps and would expect to see Bracknell and Wokingham at a standstill if they were having heavy snow, but they appear to be flowing normally. Either it's all graupel in those areas, or the radar has something amiss...
  11. Something strange going on. Definitely snowing around Basingstoke, but although radar shows heavy PPN in vicinity of here we are back to moderate graupel. Must be something screwing with the radar further north? Unless winds are psuhing the PPN further south and West before it reaches the ground.... I don't know!
  12. Transitioning back to snow as we get the really heavy stuff now.
  13. Lots of surprises going on close to us! Just look at that radar!
  14. Yellow echoes are edging closer to me, but currently we've just switched to heavier groupel! Temperature back up to 1.0
  15. PPN has literally exploded between Basingstoke and Reading in last half hour. Must be some sort of developing feature.
  16. Basingstoke is right under the cosh at the moment judging by the traffic on Google maps.
  17. Must be some layers of warmer air mixing in up here if I'm seeing graupel here in RG7 and you've got snow @kold weather. Unless you have a little more altitude? I'm at about 65 metres here.
  18. 0.9 here in RG7 and still moderate graupel. I think you need the heavier PPN to get the tipping point for snow. Still under a darker green echo here.
  19. Yes, temperature is on the way down but I think that unless there is some very heavy PPN, settling looks unlikely. Quite a wet day in terms of liquid PPN; @kold weather, which site did you get the info from?
  20. Think we need to get in the heavier bursts to get back to snow here in RG7. I thought the greens might do it, but think we need to get the lighter greens. Temp steadily falling though as sun starts to go down. @kold weather is spot on: it will be treacherous once this all clears and freezes overnight.
