I hate to say this... but I'm getting the same vibes as 1987 with this one. Having lived through that night and run up, the set up is broadly the same, Sting jet, rapid cyclogenisis, same SW- NE alinement. Given the number of trees in Devon still in full leaf, I'm pretty fearful. The SE gales will also impact transport with A379 going to be in trouble at Torcross and railway line at Dawlish.

Having stood in cold at football match in SE Cornwall in my winter coat last Wednesday night with a Bovril (thats my autumn clue!) it was a lovely surprise to be at a game in Shepton Mallet yesterday with sunglasses on and I'd say around 20c? The last hurrah of 2023. Hence the excitement i guess. Guarantee I'll be back to normal next Saturday.

Just starting to rain and some distant flashes- very black all around to be fair. I think the storm is to the east but the thunder is loud One very frightened kitten. -

Well I'm in Plymouth and nothing hit yet. Window wide open curtains open. Nothing. -
I've been looking at this invest - clearly its Lee in the making and the models last evening were taking it just north of Virgin Islands. Then it curves away missing the Bahamas and USA but Bermuda could could be in the firing line. Lowest forecast pressure I've seen is 913mb and a high end cat 4 by next weekend but it's possible it could increase to cat 5. Luckily there's a front due to come out eastern US next weekend to save them but this looks like the Hurricane of the season to watch.

Start of Autumn = stinking cold Typical as it hit warmest day for weeks yesterday and I was in my gilet literally shivering.

Have been for a few weeks in Saltash branch! Sadly went into Wilko and whilst I needed a new one, they were selling all Christmas stuff at 70% off last weekend. So bought one.

August 1986 - dreadful month. We had a holiday at home that year in Cornwall and it just never got going, remember it being pretty cool throughout. Then Hurricane Charley remains came along and washed out the August Bank Holiday. It was a dreadful day, we'd gone to Torquay but came home early as you couldn't get out the car for the rain! Came home and (funny how you remember some events) watched Pat Sudgen drive over a cliff and die in Emmerdale Farm.

Drove to North Devon Saturday for Football and I was pretty surprised to see the beech trees seem to be ones most turning. Autumn's have been pretty quiet for a while now - but I can guarantee mid October when I'm on leave and in Greece the weather will be dry!

The only other year I recall being as late was 2013- clearly remember trees in Efford being greenish as Christmas lights came on in houses. The trees in Plymouth City Centre are very protected and do change much later. But this year and not just horse chestnuts there's a faint tint of autumn if you look hard enough. Dartmoor is definitely heading towards Autumn high up the Tors with some bracken starting to die back.

Best storm you've ever seen in the UK
philglossop replied to James1979's topic in Storms & Severe Weather
Easy. Monday 10th July 1995 Storm come up from the south and hit plymouth about 11pm and rumbled on literally all night. If you look on YouTube I think south Devon had flooding but its a night ill never forget and walking around plymouth city centre the next day people were like zombies as it went on till at least 5am. -
Try sorting out a football pitch in a hosepipe ban, after the wettest March. Thanks SWW... clowns

Well it's goes without saying summer of 1995 was the best. It was my personal 1976, first car, mates, clubbing etc. Fantastic summer. 1990 was reasonable but that heat spike in early August is memorable- not least that it tied in with Iraq invading Kuwait and it was blisteringly hot- in fact that heat was only beaten last summer here in Devon. Worst well the winter of 1998 was pretty awful as was Jan/Feb 1994 although we did get some snow here mid Feb from memory.

Interestingly the QBO number for June was just but only just positive at 0.72 but clearly the last few days have seen the EQBO hit through into Troposphere so we'll have a strong and mature EQBO for winter if it follows through

It’s weird but this year (perhaps it’s a new job) but I’m loving this season. After years of suffering with reverse seasonal disorder, this year it’s washing over me. Long May it continue One step at a time but it’s nice to relax and not panic. Still looking forward to my favourite season (Autumn) -

I have to say, given the weather in recent times - we’re unlikely to see all the stars Aline and give us cold winter. But you never know- a few outliers will always occur! -
